chapter 1
"Mommy, don't cry.I'm not in pain, not at all."
My daughter was weak yet still managed a smile as she reached out to wipe the tears from my eyes.In front of the surgery room, filled with the harsh smell of antiseptics,my daughter leaned against me, her hand hooked up to the IV.
"Diana, be good. Daddy will be here soon. We'll get your surgery done soon."
A ping from my phone signaled a withdrawal notification. Diana's condition had worsened suddenly. The doctor said surgery was urgent, it had to be done tonight. The cost was exorbitant, we don't have that much money now, while my husband Ken Morris went to the bank with my card to withdraw all our savings.
It wasn't until my daughter's clothes were soaked with cold sweat that Ken's figure finally appeared on the hospital's lobby surveillance screen. Relief washed over me.The bank was still some distance from the hospital, and with the traffic jam at peak hours, it was remarkable that Ken arrived so quickly. What he had done touched me deeply because he usually wasn't fond of us.In the face of life and death, the sooner the surgery, the greater the chance for my daughter to survive.
Ken quickly settled the payment. On the screen, he looked anxious, clutching the surgery order as he rushed toward the operating room.
"Daddy."Diana's eyes seemed to light up with a glimmer of hope. She reached out her trembling hand towards him.
"Excuse me, who's here for the surgery?"I held Diana, ready to take the order from him. But before Diana's hand could touch his clothes, Ken brushed past us,supporting someone else."Doctor, it's her, Hannah."He was breathing heavily, passing us by to head straight for Hannah Moore.
"Ken, it hurts.”
The woman in his arms bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes, looking like an innocent, fragile flower. Ken held her, comforting her with deep concern.I recognized her-Ken's first love.
"Doctor, there seems to be a mistake. The surgery should be for Diana Morris."
My heart skipped a beat;but I tried to keep my voice as steady as possible. The doctor checked the name on the order repeatedly.
"There's no mistake. It's for Hannah Moore."
Out of Ken's sight, Hannah glared at me with a fierce look. Her cheeks were flushed, hardly looking like someone tormented by illness. With the surgery prepared, the doctor began clearing the area.
"Alright, only the patient and family members may enter.Everyone else, please leave.”
I stared at Ken in disbelief, but he remained anxious.
I placed my daughter on a chair and grabbed Ken's arm.
"Where's the money? That was for Diana's surgery! Are you insane?"
Ken looked at me coldly and shook off my hand.
"I’m not insane.Hannah has cancer. The doctor said she needs surgery tonight!"
"And what about our daughter? Don't you know if she doesn't have surgery tonight, she'll die?"
I lunged at him, shaking his arm violently.
Ken frowned, pausing for a moment.
"Cloris! stop it! Even if you hate her, you shouldn't curse your own daughter like this.”
Ken glanced at Diana's pale face, his eyes void of any emotion.
"Do you think I'd believe our daughter is sick, Cloris? Do you think I'd fall for these tricks again?"
When pursued Ken, I once fell seriously ill and needed his care.
But Hannah had poisoned his mind with lies, making him believe I was faking it.
Then he coldly accused me of faking my illness to toy with him, creating a rift between us.
"Money can be earned again, but Hannah's life is irreplaceable!"
Ken's grip was stronger this time, throwing me to the ground.
"Ken, you’ll regret this!"
All he left me with was his indifferent back.
A wave of bitterness filled my heart.
Tears streamed down, falling onto Diana's small face.
Because of the illness, her once round, fair cheeks were now gaunt and pale.
"Diana, we...might not have the surgery today.”
“Daddy doesn't want us anymore...”
“Mommy...Mommy...”
I choked, my heart aching, unable to speak.
"Mommy, don't cry. Then no surgery..let's go home.. 'm not in pain."
Seeing my red eyes, Diana forced a smile on her pale face, a smile more heart breaking than tears.
At five, she might not understand everything, but at that moment, I felt she understood too much.
I held her, her tiny body frail and bony.
I' never forget that night.
"I won't leave you, Mommy. I want Mommy to always be happy."
I could never forgive Ken.
And I could never forgive myself.
