Chapter 01

“Hey Meredith, Are you sure we’ll find the baby dragon here?” Simon said almost whispering. “I told you that baby dragons are raised here. So, would you please concentrate and be done with that stupidity of yours?” I hushed him sounding annoyed. “Yeah, Simon’s got quite a small brain for that big head of his” Sandra chuckled receiving a glare from Simon. Most of the dragons rested on the southern lake of the village, so the villagers called it the dragon’s nest and forbid children especially under the age of 15 to go anywhere near it. It’s not because the dragons would do any harm but our villagers believed that our deity resided in that lake and the dragons were like the soldiers protecting their King. It was unusually calm compared to the Northern and the Eastern Lake where children are found playing with the dragons. Like the little devil I was that got the three of us Simon, Sandra and I to sneak into the nest just so we could get a glimpse of those tiny baby dragons...Yeah it sounds weird but no one have seen a baby dragon in our village, not even the chief(My father). We hid behind the bushes and took our steps cautiously, not wanting to disturb the peaceful sleep of the dragons. “This was a stupid idea” there he goes…started blabbering without a slight PATIENCE “Would you stop with that nonsense reasoning of yours? This is like a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity…we’re making a history” I sounded enthusiastic. Yep! I was. “Yeah, no one in the village has seen a baby dragon before…isn’t it weird? Doesn’t that sound shady to you?” Simon said giving a meaningful look. One day he’s gonna get into trouble because of that smart mouth of his and I really felt like shutting it up for the rest of his life. “SIMON!” Sandra silenced him. I don’t know how does she do that but one thing is for sure, Sandra is gonna be a great leader in the future. I admired her lot like a lot lot (it feels understatement). Just then, I felt something breathing behind me and in front of me Simon and Sandra, who looked terrified. I dared not look back because a part of me knew what it was and maybe we upset it a little by disturbing it’s peaceful sleep…Yeah I said before that water dragons are harmless but did I mentioned that they’re the most scariest being when angered? Sandra grabbed mine and Simon’s hand and ran like there was no tomorrow. We ran quite deep inside the forest but the worse part…”That thing is still following us?!” Simon panicked “I told you not to LOOK BACK!” Sandra snapped. After what felt like forever, Uncle Hans, my father’s general came to our rescue and he did something which we don’t know what it was, like a trick or technique for taming the beast which seemed to calmed the dragon. Three of us stood there looking like idiots. “May I know why I’m seeing the three of you running from the southern direction?” Uncle Hans gave a questioning look. “It’s Meredith” Oh God Simon! I wish you fall down the stairs and break your neck. “Stop it! Will you?” Sandra’s a sweetheart “What? Did I say something wrong? Didn’t you see we almost got killed?” “ENOUGH!” Uncle Hans’ voice made him shut up. Thank you Uncle Hans I love you too. “I guess we have a lot of catching up to do? Young Miss?” Uncle Hans finally turned to me. I am so dead. If father knew that I went to the Southern lake and angered a mother dragon not to mention I put my only best friends in danger too. God! Why is this happening? I swear I’m never going back to the nest only if you could let this one slide PLEASE! “Uncle Hans!” Sandra called, she was always my savior. Oh you don’t know how much I love you. “Meredith is not the only one at fault, we all are. If she’s gonna be punished, then we would share that too”  I saw Simon’s jaw drop as those words left her lips. I kinda felt guilty for letting her take the responsibility of something that I started. For a 9 years old kid she was mature and responsible, she was like an elder sister to me though we’re of same age. “I didn’t say young miss is going to be punished alone, since you three are equally guilty..” He gave us a mischievous look. “The high priest shall decide your punishment” Signalling us to follow him. I am so DOOMED. -5 HOURS passed- “My hands are killing me” Simon cried “You only wrote 3 pages and I have to complete a whole book of this by tomorrow” I snapped at him “Yeah and whose fault it is?” I was starting to get annoyed but I kept that to myself not wanting things to get any worse. “If you both would stop whining and bickering then maybe we could’ve completed by dawn” Sandra smiled which was creepy. Well, our punishment was to write the 5000 rules which were written in the temple of the southern lake with no mistakes, no bad handwriting and no shortcuts. The thing is I was told to write it 10 times since I was the mastermind and 5 times for Simon and Sandra. For a 75 years old, the high priest was very sharp, I mean who the hell would be able to check any mistakes in that long writing but he noticed even the tiniest mistake and made us start from the beginning. By the time Sandra and Simon were done, I was struggling halfway. Simon looked like his life-force was sucked out of him. I felt bad for him so I told him to go back home but he insisted on waiting for me with Sandra so that we could go back together. My best-friends, you guys are the best thing happened to me ever and I would never ever want to lose you. We’ll stay happy forever.
