Moving
Cece I pulled into the driveway of an old two-story house. It wasn't completely run down, but it didn't exactly look stable either. I parked in the driveway and turned the car off. I turned to face the back seat. "you ready buzz." "Yeah I can't wait to see Mom again" he said giving me a smile big enough to see his two missing front teeth. I gave him a small tight-lipped smile, in the back seat was my little brother Austin, I called him Buzz because he is absolutely obsessed with Buzz Lightyear. Most of his clothes consisted of "to infinity and beyond" quotes and in one of these suitcases he had Buzz Lightyear sheets and pillow cases. "Hey, do you remember what we talked about" I asked as I got out of my gray Toyota Camry. Yeah, it was a little old, but it was pretty reliable. It belonged to my grandmother, but she left it to me in her will along with the rest of her retirement fund, which in hindsight wasn't a lot, but it was way better than nothing. It meant that I wouldn't need a full-time job and could keep going to school. I was still going to need a part-time job to support Austin and myself because god knows Miranda wasn't going to. The only reason she was letting us stay here was because the court basically forced her to. "Yeah, I remember, stay out of Dave's way and if I need anything, ask you not mom" he said, smiling and waving his hand in dismissal. He was looking out the window with an excited expression. It pained me to see him so happy to see his mother again when I knew that she didn't give a sh*t about him. I reached the trunk of my car and opened it to pull out his wheelchair. I opened it up and rolled it to his side of the car and gently placed him in it. I grabbed two duffle bags and placed them in his lap, then grabbed my suitcase that had another duffle bag strapped to the top of it. Two duffle bags and the suitcase belong to him. I just had one duffle bag. Any extra money I had always went to buying Austin extra things like toys and clothes. I only ever buy myself necessities. I walked up the driveway rolling Austin, I internally groaned when I saw the few steps leading up to the door. I braced myself and leaned the wheelchair back, causing the front two wheels to lift and began moving it up the steps. It took a little effort with the added weight of the bags, but I did it. I straightened my shoulders and knocked on the door. I was relieved to see Miranda open the door instead of Dave. Don't get me wrong. I hated Miranda too, but at least she never got physical. Miranda and I had a nonexistent relationship, meaning we pretended that the other didn't exist, but on rare occasions we did acknowledge each other. It was never positive, mostly involving screaming matches and the occasional shove. Dave, on the other hand, was a drunk who loved to try and get physical, especially when Miranda wasn't around. He's the reason I moved in with my grandma in the first place. "Ugh, clean your shoes and just come in already" her nasal voice was like nails on a chalkboard. I walked in surprised to find that it was actually pretty decent looking inside. It didn't match the outside. Miranda led us to two rooms on the downstairs floor across from each other. The rooms were fairly small but at least we didn't have to share. "Listen, you two are to stay down here at all times. Do not go upstairs. Do I make myself clear" she said, narrowing her eyes at me "Yes ma'am", I said, giving her a fake big smile. She rolled her eyes and showed me where the bathroom and kitchen were and retreated upstairs, warning me one last time to not go upstairs. I rolled Austin into his room and helped him put his clothes in the tiny closet and dresser that was on the right side of his twin-sized bed. I have to say I was thoroughly surprised to see that both of our rooms actually had a bed. I thought I was going to have to go out and buy one or something. I put his sheets on his bed while he put Buzz Lightyear stickers all on his dresser and the walls. I had a feeling he shouldn't be doing that, but whatever it made him happy, and I would gladly take the blame if it kept a smile on his face. After setting up his room, he insisted I let him help me set up mine. There was far less to do since I barely had any belongings, which made him frown. "Why do I have more clothes than you" he said, "aren't girls supposed to have a lot of clothes." I ruffled his hair and smiled "I have enough clothes and the clothes I do have are pretty nice don't you think" I said pulling out a black top crop with long bell sleeves. Almost all my shirts were long sleeves. I needed them to hide the cuts on my arms that bulged out. Very rarely did I ever wear a short-sleeved shirt out in public. I was thankful that Miranda happened to live in one of the colder regions, so I wouldn't die from heat stroke all year round like I did at grandma's house. Though I don't know what I would do during summers. "How about we go out to eat tonight and have a look around the town." I asked "I'd love to please, can we?" he squealed. Of course we can let's freshen up a bit first", I said, putting the shirt I pulled out. "Okay" he said, turning and rolling himself out of the room. I changed my clothes into a crop pink hoodie and some tight blue jeans. I went to the bathroom and brushed my hair as I was looking at myself in the mirror. I took the time to appreciate my appearance, especially my eyes. I had a condition called complete heterochromia. My right eye was a light blue color and my left was a light brown. Appreciating myself was something I had to work on in therapy, but after two years, instead of seeing everything I hated about myself, I started to see the beauty I harbored. With a small smile I left the bathroom and knocked on Austin's door. "buzz you ready" I called through the door. "Almost" he yelled, I walked back to my room and grabbed my wallet and put it in my hoodie pocket. "Okay I'm ready" he had put on one of his very few shirts that didn't have anything to do with Buzz Lightyear some black sweats and of course Buzz Lightyear themed shoes. "Alright let go, oh wait". I realized I didn't have a key to get back into the house and I didn't want to have to interrupt Miranda again or worse, Dave. I walked towards the kitchen and thankfully saw a key with a note that said if you lose it don't expect another. At least I didn't have to ask for it. I quickly added the key to my keychain "alright now we can go". I carefully helped Austin down the steps and into the car. After about 5 minutes of driving, we drove past the high school and elementary school. I was thankful they were across from each other, so I wouldn't be that far from Austin. About 2 more minutes away there was a middle school and about 20 minutes away from the house there were a couple of diners and fast food places, a small mall with little boutiques and a food court in it. We decided to go to one of the diners called Sal's, upon entering, I noticed they had a "help wanted" sign. We were seated immediately at a small table in the back. Our waitress's name was Sophie. She was around my age and fairly nice. After she got our food, I asked about the sign, and she got me a form to fill out. We talked for a little bit, having a few things in common, until her manager called her over and told her to get back to work. I turned my attention back to Austin, who was nearly done with his food. "Is it good buzz," I asked, raising one eyebrow, looking at him amused. "It's delicious can we come here, every day" he asked, eating the last bit of pasta off of his plate. "How about once a week" I said, still amused. "Okay" he said with a shrug, Austin was easily pleased and that made me happy, he was so nice despite everything we've been through, and I was proud of him. He was also really smart for his age and was skipping fourth grade going straight to fifth. I was kind of worried that he would be the only eight year old in fifth grade, and he was in a wheelchair. I knew kids could be cruel. I hoped he would at least make a few friends. We finished eating and I paid the bill with a twenty dollar tip, feeling a little guilty for getting her in trouble. Austin took out some of his tooth fairy money leaving an extra two whole dollars. "Buzz you baller, where did you get all that" I said, chuckling a little, "the tooth fairy gave me seven dollars a few days ago" he said, flexing the rest of his money, which was a five dollar bill. "Wow, so your basically rich now, huh" "Yeah basically" he said with a shrug. I rolled him back towards the car and helped him in and closed the door behind me. As I made my way towards the driver's seat, a Porsche whipped its way to the parking spot. Three spots down out of the car came two tall and glorious twins. They would have been identical if not for their hair cuts. One had his hair shaved on the sides and the top slicked back while the other had what appeared to be shoulder-length hair pulled into a man bun. The one with the bun had a childlike look in his eyes while the other one had a cold look and looked to be covered in tattoos. They both tilted their heads in the air then whipped them at me, looking me in the eyes. They had a shocked expression, then a smirk played on both their lips. I almost didn't notice the two girls that hopped out of their car with them until they immediately wrapped their arms around each of the twins. A tall blonde with a slim figure, an itty bitty crop top and a skirt that hid absolutely nothing hugged the twin with tattoos while the brunette dressed similarly hugged the other one. They each draped an arm over the respective girl and walked toward Sal's. For some reason, I couldn't take my eyes away from them until they were out of my view, blinking and wondering what just happened. I got into my car and headed back towards the house. I was thankful that the bathroom had a shower with sliding doors so Austin would be able to get in and out by himself. I set up a retractable chair in the shower for him and let him do his thing. I lay on my bed thinking about those twins I saw. It wasn't like me to form a crush on someone I didn't know, it wasn't like me to form a crush on someone, period, but for some reason I felt drawn to them and what was even weirder, I felt drawn to both of them. Just the mere thought of them caused heat to travel to my lower belly and an ache between my thighs "your turn Cece" Austin's voice scared me, causing me to flinch. I grabbed my clothes and headed to the bathroom, turning on the hot water. Allowing the water to run down my head and causing hair to get damp, the thought of those twins still on my mind, resisting the urge to get carried away. I grabbed my shampoo and started washing my hair, then grabbed my strawberry-scented body wash. Once finished I got out and blow-dried my hair and did my 15-minute skincare routine. That was also part of my therapy, making time to do self-care to make myself feel worthy of care. Once completely done with the cleaning part of my night, I looked at my phone and saw that it was 8:30 and went to read Austin a bedtime story. He fell asleep pretty quickly, and I was ready to turn in too, so I went to the bathroom to do my nightly affirmations. I was taking the things I learned in therapy pretty seriously. For Austin, that is, he begged me to do everything the therapist told me to. That night I really turned my life around. It's been about three years and I haven't cut or burned myself after Austin caught me cutting myself one night and bleeding out on the floor. He cried for days saying how much he loved me and didn't want to lose me. It broke my heart to see how much I affected him. I took every step possible to make myself better, and I have to say that now I'm not just doing it for him, I'm doing it for myself, because it makes me feel like I'm worth something. I stood in front of the mirror and said 5 things I liked about myself today. I found it a little awkward complimenting myself like this but I also liked how confident it makes me feel. When done, I plopped down on my bed ready for sleep to take me. Tomorrow will be my first day at my new school. Of course, it happened to be the middle of the school year. Good thing it was my last year. Then I could get a full-time job to save up and move out of Miranda's house as soon as possible. I awoke at 7:00am to the sound of my annoying alarm. I begrudgingly got up and went to wake up Austin. After several minutes of tapping and coaxing, I finally got him to get up and make his way towards the bathroom to brush his teeth. I quickly went to my room and put on a dark blue crop top with bell sleeves and low-waisted black jeans and black high top vans. I saw Austin go towards his room in the corner of my eye, so I went to the bathroom and quickly brushed my teeth and but my long hair in two high pigtails and slightly curled my parted bangs. I applied a tiny bit of make-up and went to make Austin some pancakes before we had to leave. Just my luck, as I was bending down grabbing ingredients from the pantry shiver went down my spine and I smelt the disgusting smell of alcohol. A sudden smack to my a** caused me to jolt up and turn around with wide eyes. There swayed Dave drunk with a bottle of beer in his hand and a big hairy beer belly in nothing but his boxers. "What do you think you're doing?" I said accusingly. "Don't get your panties in a knot. I just came down for more beer" he slurred. His eyes roamed my body and made me feel dirty I gave him a look of disgust. "Don't look at me like that you stuck up b*tch, we used to have so much fun didn't we?" I stayed quiet, not wanting to prolong this conversation, "DIDN'T WE" he yelled, causing me to flinch back into the pantry "when someone asks you a question you answer you hear me" he said, lowering his head and pointing a finger at me. I nodded my head and lowered my eyes, turning red in the face with anger and fear. "Cece?" Austin's voice filled the kitchen. I looked at him with fear. Dave turned to look at him in disgust "who let this f*cking cripple in the house," he said, walking off. "Come on let's head to school" I said, my voice a little shaky. "Aren't we going to eat breakfast" he said, a little worried "We don't have time you can eat at school", I said, ushering him out the house. The drive to Milton elementary was pretty quiet. I parked in the handicapped spot and had just got Austin out when the vice principal showed up. "Hello I'm Mrs. Claire the vice principal of Milton elementary". "We just wanted to let you and Justin know that we are here if you need anything, all you have to do is ask" she said, giving a big smile. I wasn't surprised they felt the need to bring out a representative to greet us. This was a fairly small town and I doubted they had many "disabled" people here. "Its Austin actually," I said, returning the smile, "oh my apologies," she said, covering her mouth looking horrified it was obvious she was taking extra precautions not to offend us and though appreciated it was totally unnecessary. "No worries, I'm running a bit late, do mind showing Austin around without me". "Of course, leave it to me" she said, showing me all her teeth. I couldn't help but smile back. I looked at Austin and knelt down to eye level "you have a great day alright. I'll pick you up later", "okay" he said excitedly "do you have everything in your backpack your pencil box, folder, lunch box, phone" I said listing things off "Yes I have everything". He said giggling I giggled with him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Love you Cece" he said as, Mrs Claire took him in the direction of the lunchroom. "Love you" I replied. I got back in my car and drove across the street to Milton High I quickly found myself a parking spot and made my way to the front office. There was a nice old lady sitting at the front desk. "Hi there young lady what can I do for you?" Her old highpitched voice rang through my ears. "I'm Cecilia Young. It's my first day" I said, giving her a small smile. She began typing up my name on her big computer. "Ah here we are Cecilia Young". She printed out my schedule along with my locker number and combination. She also handed me a map of the school, so I could find my classes easily. "Thank you" I said as I walked out the door into the crowded hallway. As I walked down the hallway, I had my head down to study the map, so I wouldn't need it later when I walked right into something hard and fell right on my butt. I looked up to see none other than the twins. Just great.
