Chapter One: The King's Last Breath
The first snow of winter fell over the Kingdom of Goryeong like a white funeral veil.
From the highest tower of the royal palace, the ancient bronze bells rang three slow, mournful chimes. Their echoes drifted across the capital, through bustling markets and quiet temples, over tiled rooftops and frozen rivers. The people stopped what they were doing. Merchants lowered their heads. Soldiers gripped their spears more tightly. Mothers pulled their children closer.
The bells only rang like this for one reason.
The king was dying.
Within the walls of Cheongun Palace, fear spread faster than wildfire.
Royal physicians hurried through polished corridors carrying wooden boxes filled with herbs, needles, and medicines that had already failed. Court ladies whispered prayers beneath trembling lips while servants knelt silently against the walls, unwilling to meet each other's eyes.
At the center of the palace stood the Hall of Eternal Heaven, where King Hyeon lay upon an enormous bed carved from black sandalwood.
Once, he had been known as the Lion of the East.
He had united divided provinces, crushed invading armies, and ruled Goryeong for forty-three years. His enemies feared his name. His people praised his wisdom.
Now he looked like little more than a shadow wrapped in silk blankets.
His breathing was uneven.
Every breath sounded like a battle he was losing.
Around his bed stood the kingdom's most powerful figures.
Prime Minister Choi Sun.
General Kang Mu-jin, commander of the Royal Army.
High Priest Baek.
Several royal advisers.
And at the foot of the bed...
The king's two sons.
Prince Joon.
Prince Seo.
The brothers stood only a few steps apart, yet the distance between them felt greater than the mountains surrounding Goryeong.
Prince Joon, twenty-nine, wore dark blue robes embroidered with silver cranes. His broad shoulders and calm expression reflected years of military discipline. A scar crossed his left eyebrow—a reminder of the Battle of Black Ridge, where he had saved hundreds of soldiers from an ambush.
Many believed he was destined to become king.
Prince Seo, twenty-six, stood in robes of deep crimson. His hands remained folded inside his sleeves, his expression unreadable. While Joon won battles with a sword, Seo won them with his mind. Ministers feared debating him. Scholars admired him. His enemies rarely realized they had lost until it was too late.
The brothers had loved each other once.
But ambition had quietly replaced affection.
King Hyeon's tired eyes moved toward them.
He struggled to lift one shaking hand.
"Come... closer..."
The princes stepped forward together.
The room became silent.
Even the candles seemed to stop flickering.
"My sons..."
His voice cracked like dry leaves.
"The throne..."
Prime Minister Choi leaned forward.
General Kang narrowed his eyes.
Every person inside the chamber held their breath.
"The next king... must..."
Before another word escaped his lips—
A loud crash shattered the silence.
The palace doors burst open.
A bloodied royal guard stumbled inside.
"Your Majesty!"
Everyone turned.
The young guard collapsed to his knees, gasping.
"The Royal Archive... has been attacked!"
General Kang stepped forward.
"What happened?"
"The... the Crimson Chamber..."
The guard coughed blood onto the polished floor.
"The Royal Succession Decree..."
His voice broke.
"...has been stolen."
The room froze.
Prime Minister Choi's face turned pale.
The Royal Succession Decree.
A document sealed personally by the king years ago.
Only the king knew its contents.
Inside was the official name of the prince chosen to inherit the throne.
Without it...
The kingdom would descend into chaos.
King Hyeon's eyes widened with horror.
"No..."
He tried to rise.
Instead, pain shot through his body.
He collapsed back onto the bed.
The physicians rushed toward him.
His heartbeat weakened.
Prince Joon grabbed his father's hand.
"Father! Stay with us!"
Prince Seo stepped closer.
"Who took the decree?"
The dying guard whispered only one sentence.
"They... wore... black dragon masks..."
His head fell forward.
Dead.
A chill swept through the chamber.
General Kang immediately barked orders.
"Seal every palace gate!"
"No one leaves!"
"Search every corridor!"
Hundreds of soldiers stormed through the palace.
Outside, heavy drums thundered across the capital.
The gates slammed shut.
No one entered.
No one escaped.
Elsewhere...
Hidden beneath the palace itself...
Torchlight flickered inside a forgotten underground tunnel.
Three figures dressed entirely in black ran through the darkness.
One of them carried a small wooden chest wrapped in crimson silk.
The leader stopped beside an ancient stone wall.
He removed his dragon-shaped mask.
Only his cold smile could be seen.
"So..."
"The game begins."
Another assassin laughed quietly.
"The princes will destroy each other."
The leader looked toward the palace above.
"And while brothers fight..."
"We shall build a new kingdom."
He placed the chest inside a hidden compartment before sealing the wall.
No one would find it.
Not yet.
Back inside the palace...
King Hyeon's condition worsened.
His breathing slowed.
The physicians exchanged hopeless glances.
There was nothing left to do.
Prince Joon knelt beside him.
Tears gathered in his eyes.
"I swear I will recover the decree."
Prince Seo said nothing.
Instead, he watched every face inside the room.
Prime Minister Choi looked frightened.
General Kang looked thoughtful.
The High Priest refused to meet anyone's eyes.
Someone here knew more than they admitted.
Seo was certain of it.
King Hyeon suddenly opened his eyes one final time.
He pulled both princes close.
With the last strength remaining in his body, he whispered only four words.
"Trust..."
"...neither..."
His voice faded.
"...of..."
His head fell to one side.
Silence.
The king was gone.
Outside...
The palace bells rang once.
Then twice.
Then a third time.
Across the kingdom, people dropped to their knees.
The Lion of the East was dead.
Inside the Hall of Eternal Heaven, no one spoke.
Until Prime Minister Choi finally broke the silence.
"The throne is now empty."
His words hung in the air like a curse.
Prince Joon slowly stood.
"I will honor my father's legacy."
Prince Seo met his brother's gaze.
"Then prepare yourself."
Joon frowned.
"For what?"
Seo's voice was calm.
"For the deadliest battle our family has ever fought."
Far above them, hidden among the palace rafters, a masked spy silently watched the exchange.
Without making a sound, the spy disappeared into the darkness.
Only a single black dragon feather drifted to the floor.
No one noticed it.
Yet.
