chapter one. im an Alpha mate
PROLOGUE Kira had a permanent scowl etched on her face during the wedding. It was one that left a bitter taste in her mouth and she didn't hide it. She couldn’t leave even if she wanted to. For months, she had allowed her daughter to stay in the Alpha's company. They were in agreement and he treated her cordially. He hadn't found his mate which led everyone to believe he was never going to find her. Until that day when the slaves and mages were brought in as trophies from the wastelands, they had claimed. One of these mages was Haelyn who had coincidentally been the Alpha's mate. Kira wished she had stayed away until after her daughter, Xylia, had been mated to the Alpha. Luck wasn't something that made sense to her. The concept always seemed lost to her. It made little sense that she had to depend on whatever her luck was for her daughter to become Luna. She didn't need luck for that and she certainly didn’t need to sit through the wedding. She could leave if she wanted to, but sadly she didn’t want to. Kira wanted to commit the moment to memory, to remember the day her pack betrayed her. Everyone around was cheering and drinking booze as the couple displayed their love on the makeshift stage. There were wolves howling all around. “To a long life,” cheers, “a fruitful beginning,” louder cheers, “and the beautiful start of our lives.” Alpha Lucas was smiling widely as he looked down at Haelyn who still seemed bashful about the traditions. It was ever so rare for humans to be mated to beasts. They were too fragile, too small for the beasts to handle and one wrong little move could snap their necks so it was safe to say Kira wasn’t having any of that. He needed a strong woman by his side, but he had gone for the twig that was barely stable, one she could easily snap if she wanted to. Over the past weeks before the wedding, right when everyone started smelling the Alpha inside her, Kira had tried to kill Haelyn, all with no luck. She had turned up at her chambers mistakenly, but Lucas had gotten there before she could. Ever since then, he had kept her at arm’s length, his suspiscions of her growing and she didn’t need that. That was why she was at the wedding, to prove to them that she supported their union even though her mind remained in turmoil and her wolf growled in anger. Once bonded, Kira knew it was going to be impossible for her to tear them apart. Her eyes moved to Xylia who sniffled softly, her eyes in slits as she watched Haelyn feeding Lucas. She got up in an instant, walking towards the stage and Kira ran closely behind her. “What are you doing?” She shispered harshly as she dug her nails into Xylia’s arm. “Are you out of your mind? He won’t think for a second before sending you out of the kingdom. We’re still pretty lucky that he let us stay, you know? Do you want to lose that privilege out of petty jealousy?” “This isn’t petty, mummy.” Xylia sobbed, stomping her feet. “She’s with Luca. My Luca. You think I’m going to stay back and let that happen? That’s not possible, mummy. I’m not going to wait behind for that to happen.” Some guests were looking at them now in curiosity and Kira bowed her head, tugging Xlyia away from the nosey crowd. This was why she had kept a low profile. She didn’t need rumors going around in her name again. The news of her being in the Luna’s room hadn’t gone unheard and was on the tongues of all the Beasts for days. Kira groaned as they rounded a corner, their bodies blending with the shadows. The moon was their only source of light and Kira looked at her daughter, placing an affectionate palm on her cheek. It was easy for them to get called siblings because they looked alike, sharing the same raven black hair, slim body and cat eyes. Their plump, red lips also made them rather distinct among other Beasts. The two of them were the beauty standards of the Beasts and it was almost an unspoken agremment that the Alpha would mate with Xylia. Everything was going according to plan until that moment. “I have a plan, but you need to stay calm for us to be able to do anyhing. If you act out of order once, the Alpha won’t have mercy on you, not with that leech draped across his arms. Okay, my jewel?” Xylia nodded reluctantly. “What is your plan, mummy?” Kira smiled at this and moved closer in case anyone was listening in on them. She had the perfect plan, all she needed was Xylia’s cooperation. “You’re going to seduce the Alpha.” At this, Xylia gasped, but still remained in her position, listening to the words of her mother. The more she remained in her position, the more she enjoyed the words of her mother. She needed him and she just had to make him see that he needed her too. Kira knew the charm or lust of a Beast was enough to get the Alpha to his knees or close enough to even sin with Xylia and that was all they needed. •••• Xylia came home with half of her hair ripped out and her eyes unfocused. There were claw marks all over her body as she struggled to walk away from the door. Her body felt too heavy for her to move and she leaned on the door instead, knowing her mother would come out once she smelt the blood in the air. The seduction hadn’t gone well and even though she was healing, she couldn’t get over the humiliation she had faced when she met with the Alpha. It had been going well for a whole three seconds. She had plopped herself in his laps, trying her best to be sultry when suddenly she wasn’t on his laps. He shoved her off his body like she had repelled him. Xylia wasn’t having it and when she tried again, she had felt a force pulling her hair. It was so strong that half of her hair ripped out in the process. When she eventually looked up, her vision blurred and her sore, bloody scalp burned. The view in front of her was one she hadn’t been prepared to see. Haelyna was bigger and certainly looked nothing like the feeble human he had performed the rites with. Her body frame was almost like that of a Beast and her scent was so intertwined with the Alpha’s that she figured they had mated and he had fed her his blood. That was the only way her strength would be able to compare with a Beast’s. ‘Never come here again.’ Haelyna had said, a growl at the end of her sentence and her eyes flickering back and forth. ‘Lucas is mine and you are to leave this kingdom. Make sure i don’t find you before you do or I’ll have your head on a platter.’
