Prologue
Calista
Life is like a roller coaster ride. You go up and reach the highest peak you have ever experienced in your life before it all comes crashing down and your suddenly dropped back down to what will become as the lowest point of your life.
I sighed as I was snapped out of my daze from looking out the plane window because of the loud sniffle that came from beside me. The woman beside me has been reading a book titled "Rollercoaster" as soon as the plane took off and now 200 or so pages in, she was bawling her eyes out and didn't even mind that she was disturbing those close to her. She was still blowing her nose and seeing as she ran out of tissues from all the crying, I handed her my own.
"Here, you look like you needed it more than me." Giving her a small smile, I offered the tissue to her and with red puffy eyes, she looked at me and took it gratefully. I leaned back to my seat and looked out the window again, ready to drift off somewhere when the woman decided to strike a conversation with me.
"Thank you. Gosh I'm so sorry, crying like this. It's just this book is so sad." she said and as if to emphasize her point, sneezed into the tissue and rubbed her swollen eyes that had lone tears.
"It's okay, it happens to the best of us." I assured her and she nodded still sneezing into the tissue. She didn't say anything more and I thought that was the end of our conversation but it doesn't seem like that.
"Have you read this book? I really like the author of this one. I've read every single one of her works and I loved all of them. This is the latest one and it's still so heartbreaking." she said and took a swig from the water bottle beside her.
"Not really a fan of sad stories that much." I shrugged as the flight attendant went to check on us and I just thanked her before waving her off but not before asking for more tissues for this girl beside me.
"Oh she doesn't just write sad stories. This one just so happens to be one. You should read her works, they're great." she said with such enthusiasm that I couldn't help but smile.
"Okay I'll take up that offer. I'm sorry for interrupting you, you could go back to reading now. Tell me how it ends if you read it yeah?" I said and she nodded before opening the book again and I go back to looking out the clouds. I have been up in the air for a couple of hours now and the fatigue was starting to kick. Checking my watch, I saw that there was over an hour left before the plane landed so I went to take a nap.
I successfully did but then I heard some loud sniffling again and woke up and saw that the girl from earlier was really crying now over the closed book. She must've have finished it already and was now heartbroken by the ending.
"Here drink some water. You look like you need it." I offered as I slid my own water bottle to her, seeing as her's was empty already.
"I'm so sorry did I wake you? I was trying so hard not to disturb you while you were asleep but the ending really made me bawl my eyes out." she said and gratefully took the water bottle before calming down.
"It's okay. We're about to land anyways. So how's the ending? Did it end well?" I asked.
"I don't know. It ended pretty ambigously. Like I don't know what's going to happen to the main character now."
"Ah then how do you want it to end?"
"Well for one, I want her to find happiness you know? After all she's been through she deserves that atleast. I really like this book and I hope the author writes a sequel about it or something, even though I know that won't be possible since she chose to end it this way."
"Hmmm, isn't that quiet realistic though? After all you never really know how things are going to turn out until it does."
"I guess but still, I would've like for some closure atleast and preferably one where she gets to get happy atleast." I nodded and went back to looking at the clouds while the girl beside me excused herself to the restroom to touch up her ruined make-up from all the crying.
Life is like a rollercoaster ride. You are never truly sure how it will turn out, whether it's going to go up or it's going to spiral down. You kinda just get to experience it firsthand and hope for the best until it ends but it doesn't really just end after the ride too. There's so much more waiting for you after the ride and it's like a never-ending ride of uncertainty.
The girl came back looking refreshed and gave me a small smile which I reciprocated. The girl just chattered on and decided to ask questions as the plane gets closer to the airport.
"I'm glad to be back after a few weeks away! How about you? Are you going home too or are you here for a trip?"
"I'm here to come home too." I said vaguely but she doesn't seem to notice as she exclaimed in surprise.
"That's great then! As much as I like travelling, I still like our country better." she said as she put the book on her bag but then stopped and contemplated again before pulling it out and handing it to me. I took the book with eyebrows raised and looked at her.
"I want to give it to you. I know you said you don't like sad books but please give it a chance. I'm sure you'll like it just as much as I did." she said and I just chuckled before putting it inside my own bag. She beamed and looked proud.
"By the way my names Aurora. How about you? I've been bothering you with my blubbering so can at least know what's your name? So when I talk about it to my friend who I know is going to say I'm an embarassment, atleast I know the name of who I bothered for the whole flight." she chuckled and offered her hand and I took it.
"Calista and no need to worry. Atleast I got a book out of it." I teased and she giggled before telling me that it was a small price to pay. Our conversation got cut short as the pilots voice rang out from the intercom, telling us that we were about to land and was ushered by the flight attendant to fasten our seat belts for landing. Aurora from beside looked excited about landing and was talking about what she's going to do when she lands while I calm my hammering heart inside as the view of the runway came into view.
The plane slowly came into a land and we were ushered out of the plane slowly while Aurora still talked beside me. She doesn't seem to notice my silence and continued and when it came to part on the lobby, she bade me farewell and wished me well as she disappeared from my view forever. I sighed and steeled myself as I step outside the airport and breathe in the air of the place I once called my home.
Five years, five years after I decided to abandon the life I only knew how to live before it was shattered to start a new. Five long years of trying to make myself forget and move on. Five years after the rollercoaster of my life came crashing down. Five years away from this place as I left this place to start a new.
It's been five years since I left this same airport as a broken girl and having to slowly piece myself together while away and now five years later, I'm not the same as I left.
Five years huh? It's good to be back.
