009. Close Yet So Far

1124 Words
Kendell I had wanted to sneak into Alexa's room. My wolf yearned crazily, wanting to claim her again and again. Surprisingly, I had managed to keep my demons under control before she came by. And now that she was here, my wolf was losing it. She was close, yet so far. Two days ago, after she woke up from her coma, I requested to see her so I could share the news with her, hoping that would make her loosen up. But no, it didn't. I ran a check on her to find out she was once the Luna of their pack. I guess I have to dig further because I can't see any clear reason for her hate. When I crept the door open a while ago, she wasn't there. "My little vixen must have tried to run," I smirked. "When will she learn?" Was that the reason she had asked for a separate room two days ago? I had seen her talking to George, all smiles. She was getting familiar with him, and I didn’t want that. But what sent me reeling off was her outfit—a black lacy nightwear. My wolf stirred, heat rising from within me. And now, here we were. She stood close to the door like I was some monster, acting innocent, like she wasn’t the one who had begged me the other night. "I'm waiting, you know," I sighed, watching her spoil the moment with her sulky face and hands covering her chest. "I have no special skills," she retorted bluntly. I noticed her shiver. Was it from fear or cold? "Are you okay?" I asked, my voice cool. My question was met with no reply. "Why are you trying to be difficult, mate? What wrong have I done to you?" "Point of correction, my name is Alexa. Don't use that cursed word on me." Her words pierced my heart like venom. I could feel my wolf reacting. "What wrong," she huffed, continuing, "because you are a beast, a monster, cursed, and a killer who separates families." She spoke, her voice uneven, threatening to break into a sob. I could see tears trickling down her face. Wow, my little vixen isn’t that tough, I guess. She had finally ruined the mood. I got down from the bed and went to meet her, but she kept moving back until she finally hit the wall. She was speaking in riddles I didn’t understand. Yes, I know I might have caused a lot of pain, but what had I done to make Alexa hate me so much? "Come," I dragged her to my bed, offering her the duvet to cover herself as she was shivering badly. My eyes softened a bit. "Alexa, please tell me—what did I do wrong?" I asked as I took her hands into mine, but she quickly yanked them away. "Tell me so I can ask for forgiveness or make amends." "You really want to make amends?" she questioned, and I nodded. I noticed she was avoiding my chest and was focusing on my face. Maybe I made her feel uncomfortable. I quickly wore my shirt, and it worked—her eyes now traveled down my body. "Here, touch." She took my hand to her heart. "You shattered me, Kendell. You broke me. You stole from me," she said as she dug into my arms, her breathing unsteady. "And you will pay for it," she completed. She was hurt, but how was I the cause of it? That wasn’t the right thing to do at the moment, but I cupped her face, ignoring the blood from my arms, a result of her nails which dug into them, and kissed her lips. I withdrew a bit, and her eyes opened—maybe from shock. She didn’t push me back, and I saw that as an invitation. I kissed her again, this time deeper, my hands wiping off her streaks of tears. She let go of my arms now. My wolf was fully awake, and I guessed hers was too. I made to kiss her again, but this time, I kissed everywhere on her face but her lips. I was about to withdraw, but she drew me in—maybe unconsciously, but she did. Yet I still didn’t give in. "You can sleep here, Alexa." She looked at me, her blue eyes a pleasing sight to behold. I left the room, not wanting to do anything stupid. My demon was rising, wanting to claim her for himself, but I feared he might hurt her. Marking her had made her unconscious for days. I wondered what might happen if I let him now. She might just end up hating me forever. It was now a few minutes past midnight, and I guessed she should be asleep by now. So I made my way out to the garden, the moon casting its glow on it. When I headed to my room, I saw George chatting with a lady. She saw me, but quickly averted her gaze, running away. George turned in my direction, his gaze lingering. "Uhm... yeah... Alpha," he jabbed, scratching his head. George had never been one to mingle with women, and he was mateless. Maybe he had finally found one who caught his fancy. "No need to explain, George," I exclaimed. "Next time, just find a room." I said, walking past him. ... My room was now filled with the smell of flowers and honey, with a hint of lavender waving through the air. I sat at the edge of the bed as I looked at her figure. Was this how she slept? I asked myself as she was covered from head to toe... Was she still feeling cold? "Alexa?" I called out, but she didn’t respond. "Are you cold?" Still no response. The room lacked her scent. An unnatural stillness settled in the air. I touched her, but she felt odd in my hands. I decided to uncover the duvet from her body, only to be met with a figurine. And that was how I found out Alexa wasn’t there. "Alexa!" I exclaimed. Guards came trooping in immediately. "Where's Alexa?" They all shared glances between themselves. "We thought she was with you, Your Majesty," the head palace guard announced. My hands dug into the sheets. How incompetent. Rose came into view almost immediately. "Your Majesty, I heard your scream. What happened?" "Alexa is missing!" I exclaimed. "Find her," I turned to the guards, their hands shaking at their swords. "Yes, Your Majesty," they bowed to leave. "Stop!" My voice resounded. Alexa was playing games. Well, two could play. "Don’t! Return to your quarters. She will come to me." There’s no escape route here.
