Erica drove all night, the boy in her back seat didn’t stop crying. He slept for a little while, probably from exhaustion. She took him home and offered him food but he wouldn’t eat. He had been through a traumatic experience and she knew it would take time for him to heal.
It had been a couple of days and there were no changes in the boy, she couldn’t even get him to tell her his name. His parents were dead and she hoped that he would learn to accept her as his mother. Was someone looking for him? She didn’t know and honestly she didn’t care she just wanted a child to love and who would love her in return.
Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. Andrew was finally talking and everything seemed to be looking up. He rarely spoke of his parents but the dreams occurred every night. Erica started to feel guilty about taking him. She had lost her only child, he was taken in a grocery store. She would never have closure, it had been two years since he disappeared.
The choice was finally made, she loved Andrew but she couldn’t keep him, she was selfish and missed her little boy. She felt guilty more and more with each passing day. Sure his parents were gone but he had to have a family somewhere and no doubt they were missing him. She didn’t want them to live the same heartbreak as she did, wondering every waking moment when or if they would be reunited.
The day had finally arrived, she was heartbroken. She knew she had to do it but she convinced herself it was the best for the boy. She drove for hours trying her best not to change her mind. Tears fell like rain from her eyes and Andrew knew it would be the last time he saw Erica. She stopped the car, took Andrew out and placed a teddy bear in his hands. She hugged him, gave him a kiss on the head and then pointed to the fire trucks. “ give them the note and they will take good care of you.” He stood there confused as he watched her drive away.
