The coven of medicine
Lyra Ariti
As a seer I have never had any real sense of security or place to call my own. If anyone was to find out my real identity I would be hunted down and forced to work for a pack against my will. That’s why traveling with nomadic witches has always been the best place for me in a world where I don’t belong.
It was another hot day in mid July, but the sounds of people shopping at our booths fill my ears and I can’t help but think about what a beautiful day it is. Though we don’t need much, the coven still sets up a few booths for us to sell various medicinal ingredients and spells to other supernaturals. Most witch covens live the nomadic lifestyle, this makes it so they will always have plenty of new customers to sell to. The coven likes to keep me around so that I can use my gift to see into the future and find out what items or spells they should prepare in advance, they didn’t want someone to not receive what they needed because we didn’t have it in stock. I know that it’s not exactly a glamorous lifestyle, but it was mine and I was happy.
“Lyra, I need you to go into one of the tents and find me potion IV.” Says an older women with graying hair.
“Right away Tanith” I reply; Tanith was the head witch of the coven of medicine, and somewhat of a mother figure to me. My mother was a seer that escaped from the abusive pack where she was being held. She was pregnant with me when she escaped and sought out the coven of medicine looking for help with her labor. Unfortunately my mother passed away due to complications during childbirth, Tanith took pity on me and decided to raise me in her coven.
“Found it, now let’s get this potion to the booth.” As I’m walking back I overhear the conversation between Tanith and an older gentlemen.
“Cackle fever is definitely no laughing matter, I have just the thing for your daughter. Ah! Here it is right now, have her drink a tablespoon of potion IV twice a day for 3 days and she will be good as new.”
Relief washes over the man’s face as he hands cash to Tanith, I hand the man the potion and he wishes us good fortune before walking away.
“The crowd seems to have slowed down, will we have any more customers today?”
I know that she wants me to use my gift so I waste no time, my eyes turn completely black as I start to look into the future.
“No, he was the last one for the day.”
“Good, let’s clean up and prepare to depart. Come morning we will be moving on.”
With those words Tanith turns to the other witch’s and waves her hands to signal everyone to get a move on.
I take a quick look around before I start packing, I actually enjoyed spending time here in the forests of Oregon, but we are on our way to Alaska and still have a long way to go.
Once we have the carts packed up and ready to go a few of the witches enchant the carts to move, as if they are being pulled by an invisible force.
“Don’t you ever get tired of constantly moving? I enjoy seeing new places and meeting new people but I would really like it if someday I could have a place that I can put down some roots” my best friend says to me with a bored look on her face.
Sometimes I think my best friend was born the wrong type of supernatural.
“That kind of goes against everything that witches are known for Eirian, unless you want to become one of those scary swamp witches” I tell her while making a scary face.
She shudders and sticks out her tongue and I cant help the giggle that escapes my lips.
“It’s not that I don’t enjoy the coven lifestyle, it just feels a bit lonely sometimes..” Eirian sighs.
I stare at my best friend while she looks off into the distance and day dreams about a life she might never have. Witches aren’t know for their beauty, but Eirian was a total knockout. She has hair so white it practically shines in the night, with dark gray eyes. Her name means silver, which is fitting for her. Men would practically break their necks trying to steal just one more glimpse of her. I decide to close my eyes and pray to the moon goddess for a safe trip, they say that seers have a direct line to her but I have yet to hear a reply from her.
The ride to Alaska was long, and we had to stop in Canada for a few days to rest but we finally made it. The Tongass national forest is home to many supernaturals, but mainly wolf and bear shifters live in this forest.
“Alright Lyra, I will need you to look and see what we might need over the next week” Tanith asks me while the rest of the coven finishes setting up camp. I do as I’m instructed and get to work looking into the next few days for what we might need, but my vision is obscured by flashes of red and I began to form a throbbing headache.
“I’m sorry Tanith but something is wrong, I’m having trouble seeing anything” I tell her while holding a hand to my eyes.
“Hmmm,” she frowns.
“Maybe you’re tired from traveling, how about you explore the area for a bit and we can try again later?” She suggests while putting her hand on my shoulder.
I manage a small smile and nod at her before walking towards a clearing of trees. I’m not paying attention to where I’m walking or for how long, I’m too busy trying to make sense of why my gift didn’t work. It isn’t until I see a flash of red in my peripheral vision that I stop and take in my surroundings. A few feet away standing between a couple trees is the biggest wolf I have ever seen, his fur so red it’s as if he is made of fire. He stares at me and I notice that his eyes are green and shine like emeralds. I’m so enchanted by this wolf that I forget that Wolves are the sworn enemy of a seer.
I begin to back up in the direction I came when I manage to stutter, “h-h-hello, I’m with the coven of medicine, we set up shop not far from here.”
The wolf continues to stare at me, so I decide to continue, “I’m sorry if I’ve walked on to your territory without realizing, I promise it won’t happen again.”
This time the wolf takes a few steps closer to me, before I have the chance to say anything else he shifts back into his human form. It’s no wonder he has such a beautiful wolf, the man could give Adonis a run for his money. His hair is black and shaved on the sides but slightly long and curly on top, and his eyes are a deep green. He has strong cheekbones and a cut jaw. My eyes roam to his naked body; He is tall, easily 6’3 and his body is rippled with muscles. Before I allow my eyes to travel any further south I look away, knowing that my cheeks have to be bright red.
“Well, it was really nice meeting you but I must be getting back to my coven” I quickly told the man before me.
As I turn my back to him and begin to head back to my coven I hear the wolf say his first word to me, “Mate.”
