A scene then unfolds that I didn’t expect. Cabualca stares at me, annoyed to find me there and opens his mouth. He knows my true identity. The village is full of armed men in the pay of the narcos. If he talks, I'm probably dead. I begged him with my eyes to be silent. Against all odds, he closes his mouth and says nothing, letting his eyes slide over me as if he's seeing me for the first time.
His eyes then focus on Adam and are charged with cold anger that makes me shiver. Adam seems just as harsh and he grabs my hand. The two men know and hate each other, there's no doubt about it. But the doctor's protective gesture troubles me deeply. I expected him to push me towards the village to hide at the back of a house with orders not to move, not even to breathe.
