Chapter one: Shadows in the Night.
Seraphina tugged her jacket tighter around her shoulders, the chill of the night sinking into her bones. Rain drizzled lightly, making the streets glisten under the dim glow of streetlights. Normally, she would never walk home like this not alone, not in weather this cold and unforgiving ,but tonight she had chosen to. Maybe it was stubbornness, or maybe she just needed to feel the city beneath her feet, hear the quiet hum of the world when it slowed down. Her steps echoed softly against the wet pavement. She noticed the way puddles reflected the flickering lights above, a distorted mirror of the street. There was something off about tonight, though she couldn’t put her finger on it. The air felt heavier, and every shadow seemed to stretch longer, darker, moving just slightly when she wasn’t looking. Her curiosity tugged at her; she wanted to investigate, to understand why the night felt… different. Seraphina was a genuine soul, always honest, always looking for truth in everything around her. Even when fear crept into her chest, she couldn’t stop herself from observing, from trying to make sense of things. She slowed her pace to take it all in,the rustle of leaves in the wind, the distant sound of a car, the occasional clink of something falling in a nearby alley. The city was alive tonight, but not in the usual way. That’s when she noticed it. A shadow. A figure lingering just beyond the reach of the streetlight. It didn’t move like a normal person. It stayed, still and silent, almost as if it had been waiting for her. A chill ran down her spine, and her first instinct was to run. Her heart pounded in her chest, every fiber of her body screaming to escape. Her feet twitched, ready to bolt, yet somehow she couldn’t. She was frozen by something she couldn’t name, something dark and magnetic that pulled at her instead of pushing her away. The figure stepped closer, or maybe it didn’t. It was hard to tell, the shadows hiding its movements, blending seamlessly with the night. Seraphina’s breath caught in her throat. She wanted to look away, to break into a sprint, but curiosity rooted her in place. Who was this person? Why did their presence feel so… heavy, so commanding? Her mind raced. Am I imagining things? she thought. The rational part of her told her to turn, to call someone, to run. But the rest of her the part that was brave, that had always felt more alive when she faced the unknown kept her feet planted firmly on the wet street. The figure emerged slightly from the shadows, and for the first time, she saw him clearly. He was tall, impossibly graceful, with dark hair that fell perfectly across his forehead. His eyes, though, were what made her pause—sharp, deep, and piercing. They were almost too still, too knowing, and yet they burned with a strange intensity that made her chest tighten. Seraphina’s instincts screamed at her. Run. Now. But another part of her, a part she didn’t understand, wanted to step closer, to look deeper into those eyes and see the secrets hidden there. “Who… are you?” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly, though she tried to sound steady. He didn’t answer immediately. He simply watched her, as if measuring her, as if he already knew something about her that she didn’t know herself. There was a strange calmness to him, a silent power that made her feel both terrified and inexplicably drawn. Her mind spun with possibilities. A stranger? A threat? Or… something else entirely? She noticed the small details she couldn’t unsee: the way his movements were fluid, almost too perfect, the way the shadows seemed to cling to him, wrapping around him like a cloak. There was a stillness in him that felt unnatural, and yet she couldn’t look away. Every instinct told her danger was near, but another part of her whispered that this encounter was something she was meant to experience. Seraphina’s pulse quickened. Rain soaked her hair, plastered it to her face, but she barely noticed. She was lost in the presence of this man, this dark figure who had appeared from nowhere. He didn’t smile, didn’t frown,he simply stood there, watching, waiting. The silence between them was almost unbearable, charged with an energy she couldn’t name. And then, just as suddenly as she noticed him, he shifted slightly, tilting his head in a way that made her shiver. The wind picked up, rustling the trees, and for a moment, she thought she saw the tips of his fangs flash in the dim light. Her heart skipped a beat. No. That can’t be real. She shook her head, trying to convince herself she was imagining things. But deep down, she knew. There was something… not human about him. She didn’t yet understand what he was, but she felt it. A presence that was older, stronger, darker than anything she had ever encountered. And yet, despite the fear, despite the warnings screaming in her mind, she couldn’t bring herself to leave. The figure stepped closer, his movement almost imperceptible, and the space between them shrank without her noticing. She felt the warmth radiating from him, but it was a dangerous warmth, the kind that promised both danger and desire. “Why are you here?” she asked again, louder this time, trying to keep her voice steady. Still no answer. Just the weight of his gaze pressing against her, the night closing in around them. Seraphina realized with a jolt that she had no idea how long they had been standing like this—minutes? Hours? Time seemed meaningless in his presence. Her body wanted to flee, to run as far away as possible, but her feet refused. Something inside her a fire she didn’t know she had kept her rooted. Her heart raced, her breath came in shallow gasps, and yet a strange thrill coursed through her veins. She was terrified, yes, but also alive in a way she hadn’t been before. Finally, the figure spoke, his voice smooth and low, almost hypnotic: “You shouldn’t be out here alone.” Seraphina’s eyes widened. The timbre of his voice sent a shiver down her spine. She opened her mouth to respond, but no words came. Her mind was blank, consumed by the intensity of him. He took a step back, melting slightly into the shadows again, leaving her alone… for now. Seraphina finally exhaled, knees weak, heart hammering. She ran the last few steps home, not daring to look back. But as she reached the safety of her apartment door, she couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still there, watching, waiting. And she knew, deep in her bones, that tonight had changed something. That dark figure was not just a stranger. He was something more… something dangerous. And somehow, she was drawn to him. As she locked her door and leaned against it, breathing heavily, she whispered to herself: Who are you? Little did she know, the answer would soon pull her into a world she had never imagined a world of shadows, secrets, and a fire she didn’t yet know she carried.
