Chapter Seventeen Katie had the uncontrollable notion that, if she were smart, she should turn on a heel and get the hell out. Go get her car washed, go to lunch, go home and do laundry, anything. But, she realized, it was too late. The cop, whoever he was and whatever his business, had overheard her conversation with Billy; knew she had arrived in the reception area. Her office door was right around the corner and it was open. Kate exhaled. “Thank you, Billy. Any other calls?” All the euphoria of her exciting news dissipated like morning frost in sunshine.
