Naomi Foster, a veterinarian who has recently experienced heartbreak after her marriage is called off, decides to escape the city crowds and the shame that follows. She accepts a temporary offer to work as a veterinarian for locals and their pets in a small Alaskan village.

However, the life she imagined would be peaceful and quiet changes drastically when she meets Erik Thorne, a polar biologist famous for researching wild reindeer.

Erik is a man who views the world with curiosity, but his heart is scarred by the loss of his sister in a snowstorm several years ago. When Erik brings an injured moose to Naomi’s clinic, their meeting begins a relationship filled with sparks of tension, differing views, and unexpected charm.

Under the Alaskan sky filled with the Northern Lights, Naomi and Erik begin to open up to each other. Naomi helps Erik care for the reindeer that are key to his research, while Erik introduces Naomi to the extraordinary world beyond the polar cold. They share memorable moments, from aurora-lit nights to exploring stunning icy landscapes.

However, their love is tested when Naomi receives a permanent job offer from a top clinic in the big city, just as Erik secures funding for a scientific expedition that requires him to stay in Alaska. Naomi must decide whether to return to her old, stable, empty life or risk pursuing true love in a place far from familiar comforts.

Amidst the beauty of nature and the warmth of a slowly growing love, Naomi realizes that sometimes, to find your place in the world, you must first get lost in it.

Escape from the City
Chapter 1: Escape from the City Rain drizzled down the windows of Naomi Foster’s small apartment, streaking the glass like tears. She sat on the sofa, still in her fluffy pajamas, with a cup of tea in her cold hands. In front of the couch, a large black suitcase stands upright, reminding her that the time has almost come to leave everything behind. A wilted arrangement of white lilies sat in a glass vase in the corner of the room. It was a remnant of her wedding decorations that never happened. Just three weeks ago, Naomi stood in this very spot in her wedding dress, trying to hold back tears as news of her fiancé’s infidelity shattered all the plans she had made over the years. Her phone rings on the desk. A message from her best friend appeared on the screen: “Naomi, you don't have to go that far. We can find a solution. You’re not alone.” Naomi took a deep breath. She knew her best friend’s intentions were good, but this decision wasn’t just about running away from the fiancé who broke her heart. It was about finding herself again without the haunting shadow of past wounds. Her eyes turned to the airplane ticket on the table, with the destination printed on it: Anchorage, Alaska. It was a one-way ticket, a symbol of the fresh start she needed. The job offer as a temporary veterinarian in the remote village of Glacier’s Edge came at just the right time, like a life preserver in the middle of a turbulent ocean. “It's not running away,” she whispered, trying to convince her heart. “This is change.” Naomi arrives in Alaska. The cold air greeted Naomi as she exited the airport in Anchorage. Her breath was like mist in the air, and every gust of wind made her shiver despite her heavy coat. An elderly man with a friendly face stood near a sign that read “Glacier's Edge Shuttle.” He waved at Naomi. “Welcome, Doctor Foster,” he greeted her in an Alaskan accent. “My name is Bill. I'll be taking you to your destination. Please be prepared, it's going to be a long ride.” The van Bill drove looked old, but it was warm inside. Naomi sat in the front passenger seat, looking out the window at the changing landscape. Snowy mountains towered, rivers froze in silence, and endless pine forests seemed to hide otherworldly secrets. “You'll love Glacier's Edge,” Bill said, breaking the silence. “The people are friendly, and the scenery is stunning. Of course, it takes time to get used to the silence.” Naomi just nodded with a faint smile. She wasn’t sure if she could get used to this silence. But wasn’t that what she was looking for? Away from the hustle of the city, away from the haunting memories? Arrival at Glacier’s Edge After almost three hours of traveling, Naomi saw a wooden sign that read, “Welcome to Glacier's Edge.” The small village looked like a scene from a holiday postcard, with wooden houses decorated with Christmas lights and white snow covering the roofs. In the center of the town, there is a small veterinary clinic with a simple signboard: Dr. Marjorie’s Veterinary Clinic. Bill dropped Naomi’s suitcase in front of the clinic. There, an older woman with a warm smile was waiting. “You must be Naomi,” she said, extending her hand. “I'm Dr. Marjorie. Welcome to Glacier's Edge. I'm sure this place will be a comfortable home for you.” Naomi took the woman’s hand, feeling slightly relieved. “I hope so,” she replied softly. Marjorie led Naomi into the small but tidy clinic, which smelled of antiseptic mixed with pine wood. “This is the main office and waiting room,” Marjorie said, indicating the area. “And upstairs is the small apartment where you'll be staying while I'm gone.” Naomi climbed the small staircase to the upstairs apartment. The room was small but cozy, with wooden furniture and large windows overlooking the forest. As she opened her suitcase and began to organize her belongings, a sense of doubt began to creep into her mind. “Can I really start a new life here?” she muttered. Northern Lights That night, Naomi stood by the large window of her apartment, looking up at the night sky. The greenish glow of the Aurora Borealis danced across the sky like a living canvas that changed color every second. It was the most mesmerizing sight she had ever seen. For a moment, the burden on her heart felt a little lighter. Amidst this beauty, she thought she could find peace there. However, that tranquility was soon interrupted by a loud knock on the clinic’s door below. A knock in the middle of the night Naomi quickly put on her jacket and hurried downstairs. At the door, a man stood with a panicked face, wearing a thick coat already full of snow. “Doctor!” he exclaimed in an urgent tone. “I need your help. My reindeer is badly injured!” Naomi froze momentarily, unprepared for an emergency on her first night. But then, her instincts as a veterinarian took over. “Okay, I'll help,” she said quickly as she grabbed the medical kit. The man introduced himself briefly, “My name is Erik Thorne. I live not far from here. My deer was attacked by something in the woods.” Naomi followed Erik into the cold night, towards the pick-up truck where the deer lay in the back. This was the start of something bigger than just a distress call. Erik Thorne looked like a part of the harsh, wild Alaskan landscape. A woolen scarf half hid his face, but his piercing blue eyes seemed to glow, looking at Naomi with hope and anxiety. Snow clung to his slightly messy blond hair, giving the impression that he had battled the weather to get here. “What happened?” asked Naomi, her voice firm despite her pounding heart. “My deer was attacked by something in the forest,” Erik replied, taking a quick breath. “I tried to stop the bleeding, but I couldn't do it alone. He's in my truck.” Naomi grabbed an emergency medical kit from the clinic cabinet, her hands moving quickly and efficiently. Although she had just arrived, her responsibilities as a veterinarian took over her anxiety. “Take me there,” she said as she followed Erik into the night. A doe lay weak in the back of Erik’s old pick-up truck. Her body was large, with tanned fur stained with blood around a gaping wound on the right side of her abdomen. The deer’s eyes were glazed over, moving weakly as Naomi approached. Naomi touched the deer’s body gently, examining the wound and taking its pulse. “The wound is deep, but he can still be saved,” she said as she picked up her tools. “I'll need time to stitch this up, and she'll need a sedative to keep her from feeling pain.” Unexpected Collaboration Erik helped Naomi set up her medical kit in the back of the truck. He worked silently, but Naomi noticed how skillful his hands were as he held the flashlight and helped calm the deer. His shoulders had a palpable tension as if the sense of responsibility for this animal was more than just a mundane task. “Is this your pet deer?” asked Naomi, trying to break the silence. “He's part of my research,” Erik replied shortly. “But they're all like family to me. I can't lose any of them.” Naomi stared at Erik for a moment before refocusing on her task. Something in the way this man spoke, a combination of firmness and warmth, intrigued her. However, there was a better time to inquire further. He began cleaning the deer’s wounds, using the deft hands he had practiced over his years as a veterinarian. Meanwhile, Erik held the flashlight with hands that were increasingly stiff from the cold. “If you get cold, you can go into the clinic,” Naomi said without turning around. “I'm fine,” Erik replied quickly. “The important thing is that she's okay.” A moment of trust After almost an hour working in the snow, Naomi finished stitching up the deer’s wounds. She covered the animal’s body with Erik’s thick blanket, ensuring the deer stayed warm. “He needs time to recover,” Naomi said as she removed her medical gloves. “Tomorrow morning, bring her to this clinic. I'll monitor his condition.” Erik nodded, but his eyes remained focused on the deer. “Thank you,” he said quietly, his voice low but sincere. “I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here.” Naomi shrugged, feeling a little awkward accepting the compliment. “Just doing my job,” she replied. “But you're great too. Not many people would transport a deer to a clinic in the middle of the night like this.” Naomi saw the hint of a smile on Erik’s face, which was short for the first time but enough to make her feel that she had done something right. Back to Solitude After Erik left, Naomi returned to her apartment. Tiredness started attacking her, but something else was nagging at the back of her mind. That man-Erik-had left a strange impression. He seemed like someone who carried a heavy burden on his shoulders but also had a determination that was hard to explain. Naomi let out a long sigh and sat on the edge of her bed. Her first night in Alaska was much more dramatic than she had imagined. However, outside the window, the Northern Lights continued to dance in the sky, reminding Naomi that perhaps this new beginning would bring the unexpected.
