Chapter 1
The pen felt heavier than it should have.
Elena held it above the last empty line on the divorce papers. Her fingers shook, making the silver tip move over Adrian’s name.
All she needed to do was sign.
One small line of ink would end three years of marriage.
Beside her, Adrian slept peacefully.
He lay on his back, one arm beneath his pillow. His black hair was slightly untidy, and the hard lines on his face had softened. In sleep, he did not look like Adrian Vale, the cold billionaire whose name could make an entire room fall silent.
He looked like the man she had once loved.
The man who had held her hand beneath the rain and promised that she would never feel alone again.
Elena swallowed the pain rising in her throat.
Promises were easy to make when love was new.
Keeping them was the difficult part.
The bedroom was quiet except for the slow ticking of the clock. It was a little after two in the morning. Beyond the wide windows, Silvercrest City glowed beneath the dark sky. Cars moved like tiny lights far below the penthouse.
Adrian had returned home after midnight.
He had walked into the bedroom while speaking on the phone, removed his jacket, and dropped it over a chair.
He had not noticed the suitcase beside the wardrobe.
He had not noticed Elena’s red eyes.
He had not noticed that she had removed most of her clothes from the closet.
He had only said, “I have an early meeting tomorrow,” before turning away from her.
Not even goodnight.
Elena looked down at the papers again.
The first page carried both their names.
Adrian Lucas Vale.
Elena Marie Vale.
Her married name.
The name she had once written proudly.
The name she would no longer carry after tonight.
She tightened her grip on the pen.
For months, she had waited for him to see her.
She had waited through lonely dinners and forgotten plans. She had waited when he cancelled their anniversary trip because of work. She had waited when he left her alone at the hospital after she became ill during a charity event.
Most of all, she had waited for him to understand what Vanessa Crane was doing to their marriage.
Vanessa was always there.
At his office.
At family dinners.
At business events.
Sometimes, even in their home.
Adrian always called her an old friend. He said Vanessa understood the pressure of his world. He said Elena was worrying about nothing.
But Elena had seen the way Vanessa looked at him.
Like he already belonged to her.
She had seen the little smile on Vanessa’s face whenever Adrian defended her.
And Adrian always defended her.
Tonight had been the final wound.
Elena had waited at a quiet restaurant for nearly three hours. It was supposed to be their last chance to speak. She had sent Adrian the time and location days ago. He had promised he would be there.
He never came.
When she returned home, she found a photograph online.
Adrian stood beside Vanessa at a business dinner. Vanessa’s hand rested on his arm. They were smiling beneath bright lights while reporters watched them.
The words below the photograph had cut deeper than any knife.
Silvercrest’s perfect pair reunited.
Elena had stared at the image until her eyes became dry.
Then she had opened the drawer where the unsigned divorce papers had waited for two weeks.
She had hoped she would never need them.
Now, sitting beside her sleeping husband, she realised that hope had only kept her trapped.
Adrian moved slightly.
Elena froze.
His hand shifted across the white sheet, stopping a few inches from her leg.
For one foolish second, her heart beat faster.
She imagined him waking.
She imagined him seeing the papers.
Perhaps he would sit up and ask her what was wrong. Perhaps he would pull her close and tell her she had misunderstood everything.
Perhaps, for once, he would choose her.
But Adrian did not wake.
He turned his face away from her.
Elena released the breath she had been holding.
That small movement gave her the answer she needed.
Even in sleep, he turned away.
She lowered the pen.
The tip touched the paper.
“Elena Marie Vale,” she whispered.
Her voice sounded strange in the silent room.
Slowly, carefully, she signed her name.
The moment she finished, something inside her broke.
There was no loud sound.
No sudden pain.
Only a deep emptiness where hope had once lived.
She stared at the signature.
It looked calm and neat.
Nothing about it showed how many nights she had cried in the bathroom so Adrian would not hear her.
Nothing about it showed how many times she had defended him to her friends.
Nothing about it showed how much she still loved him.
That was the cruelest part.
She was not leaving because her love had died.
She was leaving because loving him was destroying her.
Elena placed the pen beside the papers.
Her eyes moved to Adrian again.
She wanted to touch his face.
She wanted to remember the warmth of his skin one last time.
Instead, she reached for her wedding ring.
It did not come off at first.
Her finger had become used to carrying it.
She pulled again, harder this time, and the ring slipped free.
A pale line remained around her finger.
The mark looked like a quiet memory.
She placed the ring on top of the divorce papers.
For a few seconds, she sat without moving.
Then Adrian’s phone vibrated on the table.
Elena flinched.
The screen lit up.
A message appeared.
It was from Vanessa.
He still doesn’t know, does he? Make sure it stays that way.
Elena’s heart stopped.
She stared at the words.
Before she could reach for the phone, Adrian’s eyes opened.
His grey gaze moved from her face to the divorce papers beside him.
Then his hand closed around her wrist.
“Elena,” he said, his voice low and fully awake. “What is it that I don’t know?”
