“s**t,” he swore, rolling away from her. He stood and paced a few feet from her, leaving Alyssa feeling cold and alone. She had never considered that Jake would be playing her. He said he loved her. Then again, she’d heard those words many times over the years and they meant nothing. Why would Jake’s words mean something?
Because it was Jake.
He loved her. She knew he loved her.
What she didn’t know was why he was upset.
“What’s wrong?” she asked tentatively, wanting to go to him, but knowing he needed space from her.
