Chapter 1: The Floor
The linoleum was cold.
I remember that, because I was on it. My scrubs were still on from my shift at the hospital in Berlin. Knees pulled to my chest. Phone glowing in my hand. One message. Seen.
No goodbye. No explanation. He just left.
I am Dr. Kelly. A Kenyan doctor living in Germany. I save lives for a living. That night, I could not save my own heart.
Patrick was my future. The man I thought would be beside me when I finally became a consultant. The man who knew how I take my tea, how I cry when I am tired, how I laugh when I am nervous.
Until he became my ghost.
Three years I healed. I learned to breathe again. To walk the 5th floor without looking for his shadow in every doorway. To be the doctor who doesn't flinch when a patient says his name. To be Miss K, the strong one, the one who survived.
I thought I had closed that chapter.
Until today.
The pager screamed. 5th floor. Emergency admission. Male, 32. Car accident. Severe bleeding.
I ran, my white coat flying, my heart in doctor mode. Cold, focused, ready.
Then the nurse handed me the chart.
Name: Patrick M.
The name stopped my heart. The world went silent. The monitors beeping disappeared.
I looked through the glass. On the stretcher. Blood on his shirt. Eyes closed.
It was him.
The man who left me on the floor, now lying on a hospital floor, fighting for his life.
And I had to decide in three seconds — would I walk into that room and save him?
Would I be his doctor, or would I remain the woman he abandoned?
