THE DESPERATE DEAL
The hospital bill trembled in Clara Reyes's hands. **₱2,000,000.** Two million pesos. That was the price of saving her mother's life. “Miss Reyes,” the doctor said gently, “your mother needs the surgery as soon as possible. If we delay it too long, her condition could become critical.” Clara swallowed the lump in her throat. “How long do I have?” The doctor hesitated. “Thirty days. But sooner would be better.” Thirty days. She had thirty days to find two million pesos. Clara forced a smile. “I'll find the money.” But the moment she stepped out of the doctor's office, the smile disappeared. How? She was only a secretary. She earned ₱20,000 a month. Even if she saved every peso, it would take years. And her mother didn't have years. Clara sat beside her mother's hospital bed and held her hand. Her mother opened her eyes. “Clara…” “I'm here, Mom.” “Don't worry about me.” Clara smiled through her tears. “Of course I won't worry.” Her mother squeezed her hand weakly. “You've already done too much.” Clara shook her head. “I'll get the money. I promise.” Her mother smiled. “I believe you.” Those words nearly broke her. --- The next morning, Clara arrived at Villareal Group with barely enough sleep. The massive glass building towered over the city. Everyone knew the company. Everyone knew its CEO. **Alexander Villareal.** Thirty-two years old. Billionaire. Brilliant businessman. And absolutely terrifying. Employees called him **the Ice King** behind his back. He never smiled. Never dated publicly. Never tolerated mistakes. And most importantly— Never mixed business with emotions. Clara worked as one of his secretaries. She was good at her job. Usually. But that morning, everything went wrong. She spilled coffee on an important document. She sent an email to the wrong department. And then she arrived three minutes late for a meeting. “Ms. Reyes.” Clara froze. Alexander stood at the end of the hallway. Black suit. Perfectly styled hair. Cold gray eyes. He looked like he had stepped out of a magazine. “Sir?” “Come to my office.” Her heart sank. “Yes, sir.” She followed him. The moment the door closed, Alexander placed a report on his desk. “Explain this.” Clara looked at the papers. The Chen Industries report. Her stomach dropped. “I—I made a mistake.” “A serious one.” “I'm sorry.” “You should be.” She lowered her head. “I'll correct it immediately.” Alexander stared at her. “You're fired.” Clara's eyes widened. “What?” “You heard me.” “But sir, please.” “I don't keep employees who make careless mistakes.” “Please don't fire me.” Alexander raised an eyebrow. “Why?” Clara hesitated. Because she needed the salary. Because her mother needed surgery. Because losing her job meant losing the last bit of hope she had. “I need this job.” “That isn't my problem.” Clara's eyes filled with tears. “Please.” Alexander watched her carefully. Then something changed in his expression. Not softness. Curiosity. “Why do you need the money?” Clara quickly wiped her eyes. “It's personal.” “I didn't ask if it was personal.” He waited. She looked down. “My mother is sick.” Alexander said nothing. “She needs surgery.” “How much?” Clara hesitated. “Two million pesos.” His eyes narrowed. “And you intend to earn that with a secretary's salary?” “I'll find another way.” “Clearly.” He walked toward the window. For several seconds, there was only silence. Then he said something Clara never expected. “I can give you the money.” She stared at him. “What?” Alexander turned. “But you'll have to do something for me.” Clara's heart began pounding. “What?” Before he could answer, his phone rang. He ignored it. Then it rang again. And again. Finally, he answered. “Yes?” His grandfather's voice was loud enough for Clara to hear. “Alexander, I won't wait any longer.” Alexander's expression darkened. “Grandfather, we've discussed this.” “No. You discussed it. I listened.” “I'm busy.” “You're always busy.” His grandfather sighed. “Your grandmother and I built this family. Before I die, I want to see you married.” Alexander closed his eyes. “I'm not interested.” “Then I'll remove you from the company.” Alexander's eyes sharpened. “You wouldn't.” “Try me.” The call ended. Clara stood awkwardly nearby. Alexander slowly turned toward her. His expression was unreadable. “Do you still need the two million?” Clara nodded. “Yes.” “Then I have a proposal.” “What kind of proposal?” He walked toward his desk. “Marry me.” Clara blinked. Once. Twice. “I'm sorry?” “A contract marriage.” She stared at him. “You want me to marry you?” “For one year.” “One year?” “You'll live with me. Attend family events. Appear beside me publicly.” “And in return?” “I'll pay your mother's medical expenses.” Clara couldn't speak. Two million pesos. Enough to save her mother. But marrying Alexander Villareal? That was insane. “You're serious.” “Completely.” “Why me?” “Because you're available.” She frowned. “That is a terrible compliment.” For the first time, the corner of Alexander's mouth almost lifted. “I'm not trying to compliment you.” Clara crossed her arms. “And what happens after one year?” “We divorce.” “No feelings?” “No feelings.” “No interference with my personal life?” “Agreed.” “No expectations?” “None.” She stared at him. “And you'll really pay two million?” “Immediately after you sign.” Clara looked down. Her mother's face appeared in her mind. The hospital room. The machines. The doctor's warning. Thirty days. She knew she should walk away. This was dangerous. This man was her boss. And marrying him could destroy everything she knew. But what choice did she have? “My mother needs the surgery.” “I know.” “And you'll pay the hospital directly?” “Yes.” Clara slowly looked up. “What if I say no?” “Then you leave this office without the money.” Her heart broke. Alexander picked up a contract from his desk. “I'll give you twenty-four hours.” Clara looked at the document. “Why are you doing this?” He didn't answer immediately. Then he said, “Because I need a wife.” She laughed bitterly. “You could marry anyone.” “I don't trust anyone.” “And you trust me?” “No.” She looked offended. “Then why me?” Alexander's gray eyes met hers. “Because you have nothing to gain except your mother's life.” Clara went silent. That was true. She wasn't interested in his money. She wasn't interested in his fame. She only wanted her mother to live. Alexander pushed the contract toward her. “One year.” Clara stared at the signature line. Her hand trembled. “If I sign this…” “You'll become my wife.” “And after one year?” “We walk away.” She thought about her mother. Then she picked up the pen. “I accept.” Alexander watched her sign. But neither of them noticed the small smile that appeared on his grandfather's face upstairs when he received a message. **She accepted.** His grandfather stared at the photograph of Clara. Then he whispered, “I'm sorry, Alexander.” --- That night, Clara returned to the hospital. She showed her mother the payment confirmation. “Mom.” Her mother looked at her. “The surgery is approved.” Her mother's eyes filled with tears. “How did you get the money?” Clara forced a smile. “I found a way.” She didn't tell her mother about the contract. Not yet. Outside the hospital room, Clara leaned against the wall. She touched the ring Alexander had given her. A temporary ring. A temporary marriage. A temporary husband. At least, that's what she told herself. But she didn't know that Alexander had already started breaking his own rules. Because after Clara left his office, he had opened the contract again. His eyes stopped at her name. **Clara Reyes.** For the first time in years, Alexander wondered what it would feel like to have someone waiting for him when he came home. And that frightened him. Because this was supposed to be a business arrangement. Nothing more. But neither of them knew that one year was about to change their entire lives. **And the first rule of their marriage was about to be the hardest one to keep.** **No falling in love.** **TO BE CONTINUED…**
