He felt something, a tinge of curiosity about her life in Maryland, as it was a sharp contrast to her typically scheming temperament. He had to assume, as she was speaking, that her financial difficulties were the reason for her misery, although he had no idea what she had been going through most of her life, aside from financial problems.
