Chapter 9: The Attack The gunshot split through the silence like a crack of thunder. Elena’s breath caught as Isabella grabbed her arm. “We need to hide.” But Elena wasn’t thinking about hiding. She was thinking about him. Abina. Before Isabella could protest, Elena tore out of the room, her heart pounding. The halls were dark, the estate eerily silent. Then—footsteps. Heavy. Fast. Coming closer. A shadow moved in the corridor ahead. “Elena!” Isabella’s whisper was frantic. Elena barely had time to react before a figure lunged from the darkness. A hand clamped over her mouth. She struggled, panic surging through her veins—until she heard the voice. Low. Dangerous. Familiar. “Quiet, cariño.” Abina. Her body sagged in relief. He removed his hand but didn’t let her go. His other arm was wrapped tightly around her waist, holding her against his chest. “You shouldn’t have run,” he murmured, his breath warm against her ear. “I—” Another gunshot. Closer this time. Abina cursed under his breath. “Stay behind me.” His grip on her loosened, but the moment he stepped forward, Elena grabbed his wrist. “I’m not leaving you,” she whispered. His gaze burned into hers, unreadable, unreadable—but there was something there. Something dangerous. Then, without a word, he pulled her behind him and started moving. --- A War in the Dark The estate was under attack. Elena could hear it now—the sounds of men, gunfire, the chaos of battle just beyond the walls. Abina led her through the corridors like he knew this was coming. Like he had already planned every move. A man appeared at the end of the hall. Elena barely had time to react before Abina raised his gun. One shot. One body hitting the floor. Her stomach twisted, but there was no time to think. They kept moving. When they reached a hidden door at the end of the hallway, Abina turned to her. “Inside.” Elena hesitated. “I can’t just—” He grabbed her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Inside. Now.” The authority in his voice sent a shiver down her spine. She stepped inside, her heart hammering. He followed, sealing the door behind them. --- Trapped Together The room was small, dimly lit by emergency lights. It was a panic room. Elena turned to him, still breathless. “Who are they?” Abina exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders like he was preparing for war. “Someone trying to send a message.” “And that message is…?” His dark gaze locked onto hers. “That you are a weakness I cannot afford.” The words sent a jolt through her. Elena swallowed. “Then why am I still here?” A muscle ticked in his jaw. Then, suddenly, he was in front of her, crowding her against the wall. Her pulse spiked as his hands braced on either side of her. “Because, mi amor,” he murmured, his voice dark and possessive, “I don’t let anyone take what’s mine.” Heat curled in her stomach. Their breaths mingled in the confined space, the danger still pressing in from outside. But in that moment, all she could feel was him. Abina reached out, fingers grazing her cheek. “Are you afraid of me yet?” Elena swallowed hard. “I don’t know.” His smirk was slow, lethal. “Then let me make it clear.” His lips crashed against hers. This wasn’t the careful kiss from before. This was claiming. Possessive. Dangerous. A promise wrapped in fire. Elena’s fingers curled into his shirt, dragging him closer as his hands roamed her body, igniting something deep inside her. Gunfire echoed in the distance. But neither of them stopped. Because in that moment, nothing else existed— Except the war between them. And the one they were about to start. ---
