CHAPTER ONE- THE BEGINNING
Lucia walked into her home pulling her 5-year old brother behind her who was currently trying to scream his head off. She succeeded in taking him inside and then locked the door behind her. Her stepmom wasn't home yet. Not that it was surprising though. It was great actually. She'd already known Stephanie would be home late because she was working overtime to be able to afford drinks for her unemployed drunk of a husband. “Damien, come on” she whisper shouted trying to tug off her brother's clothes. “You need to take a bath. Now” Lucia pulled him into the bath tub and proceeded to wash his hair and arms. “I don't wanna take a bath”He said pouting up at his sister. Lucia didn't even spare him a glance as she rinsed him off and dried him with a towel. She heard the door open and she froze when she heard her father's voice. “Lucia, come downstairs now.”he demanded from the sitting room downstairs. Lucia didn't reply. She dragged Damien and struggled to help him put on his clothes which was a real task because he was wriggling around so much. “Stay still” she said and tried to pull him closer to her and ended up failing. Right after that be took off running towards the living room and she groaned. She walked slowly downstairs and came face to face with her father. He repeated his demand. She ignored him. Again. She knew what would come next. “Are you deaf, didn't you hear what I said?”He asked her coming up to stand in front of her. She clenched her fists by her sides. “Can't you see I'm busy”she replied referring to Damien who was now staring at them with a troubled expression on his innocent face. Lucia was trying her utmost best to control her already growing anger. She already knew what would come next. She was sure the fist was coming before she actually saw it. She had already anticipated it but it still stunned her when it connected with the side of her face. Lucia went down. Hard. She didn't stay down long though. She stood up and looked up at the face of her father. The man who continuously abused her and her mother. Well he had. Until it overwhelmed her mother so much that she took her own life. Lucia missed her, badly. The only reason she stayed on with this monster was because of Damien. She wanted to make enough money to be able to take care of him. He was the only one she had left. “Get the f**k out of my face”He spat going to sit on one of the sofas nearest to him. “And get me a drink or something”He said waving her off. Lucia took a deep breath trying to gather her courage. “No” “What?”Her father's spine stiffened not being used to being confronted by Lucia, or possibly anyone. “what?"He repeated standing up from where he'd splayed out on the couch. “I'm not going to get you anything” she said. Her voice sounding more confident than she actually was. “You are going to .....” “No” she countered sounding more confident. She turned to walk back upstairs, away from all this. She pulled Damien close behind her. She turned back just in time and noticed him coming at her. She reacted instinctively and shot out her leg which connected solidly with his groin. Lucia had her father on his knees but he was still struggling to get up and so she took the first solid thing she could grab -a glass flower vase, one of the only things of her mother she still had- and smashed it against the side of her father's head. She didn't stop until she'd created a bloody mess on the floor. Was her father breathing? She wasn't sure. Lucia stared at her shaking hands in shock and again stared at her father's body on the floor. There was a wound on her palm probably from the broken pieces of the vase. But the pain of the wound didn't register. She turned back to see Damien looking at her through wide unblinking eyes. When he noticed Lucia looking,he froze and tried to back away from her. She didn't move to stop him. She didn't stop him from racing to his room either. She wasn't sad that her father was dead. She was sad because she'd been the one to kill him. She knew she wouldn't be able to stay in this house any longer. She needed to leave. Fast. She stepped back from the bloody mess that was her father. And tried to gather her thoughts. The shock of killing a human being was what she struggled with as she hurriedly stuffed her and Damien's clothes into a duffel bag. She got a rag and tried to clean as much blood as she could from the floor and wiped her body. Lucia glanced at the clock on the wall and saw that it was 6:45. She had a little bit of time before Stephanie came back by 8. And so armed with a few clothes and necessities, Lucia pulled a frightened looking Damien out of the house. The house that her mother had died in. Ironically, the person who made her take her life was killed in that same house. Lucia turned back one last time and looked at her childhood home and hurried into the taxi she had hailed.
