The walk home, as usual, was brief, but I couldn"t escape the feeling someone was behind me. Every few feet I turned and looked over my shoulder, but never caught anyone there. It didn"t take a genius to work out who it was going to be, though. The three men seemed to be almost obsessing over my safety while doing everything they could to make sure I didn"t feel all that safe.
When I opened the door to my building, Rex appeared out of nowhere, right beside me. Bingo. It looked like I"d been right about who had been behind me. Even so, he took me by surprise, and I found myself gasping and drawing myself up to my full height, and nearly pulled my stun gun out of my bag. "s**t," I hissed. "You scared me."
"I"m sorry," he said, though he didn"t move back.
