Chapter 9
Ethan's heart pounded.
The Magic Pen burned in his hand as though it were alive.
Daniel was on his knees, trapped by chains of black ink that had risen from the floor.
Lena stood beside Ethan, unable to look away.
The Ink King stretched out his hand.
The entire factory shook.
"I'll ask only once," the voice echoed inside Ethan's mind.
"Give me the Pen."
Ethan tightened his grip.
"No."
For the first time, the Ink King became silent.
Then...
It laughed.
The sound wasn't loud.
It was worse.
It was the sound of thousands of people laughing at once.
The Children of Ink lowered their heads as though they were listening to a god.
Malachi smiled.
"You've made your choice."
The Ink King slowly lifted one finger.
The Magic Pen slipped from Ethan's grasp.
He tried to hold on.
He couldn't.
The Pen floated through the air.
Straight into the Ink King's hand.
The moment its fingers closed around it...
Everything stopped.
The wind.
The rain.
Even time itself.
Then the Ink King began to write.
There was no paper.
Only empty space.
Yet glowing black words appeared in the air.
Each letter hung above the factory like smoke.
"Let darkness consume the world."
The final word had barely formed before the earth trembled.
Outside, thunder exploded across the sky.
Lena ran to the broken window.
Her face turned white.
"Ethan..."
"You need to see this."
He looked outside.
The clouds were turning black.
Not ordinary storm clouds.
They looked like liquid ink spreading across the heavens.
The sun disappeared.
Day became night.
People in the streets stopped walking.
Every one of them slowly looked upward.
Their mouths fell open.
Some screamed.
Others smiled.
Across the city...
Streetlights flickered.
Buildings seemed to twist and stretch as though reality itself had become unstable.
A church bell rang thirteen times.
Then melted into black liquid.
A flock of birds flew overhead.
Halfway across the sky, they vanished.
As though someone had erased them from existence.
Inside the factory, the Ink King continued writing.
Each sentence changed the world.
"Let the forgotten walk again."
A cold wind rushed through the room.
Far away, cemetery gates burst open.
Soil shifted.
Old coffins cracked.
Figures slowly climbed into the darkness.
Not alive.
Not dead.
Something in between.
The Ink King wrote another sentence.
"Let fear become flesh."
The shadows inside the factory began moving on their own.
They pulled away from the walls.
Each shadow slowly stood upright.
Tall.
Thin.
Featureless.
They surrounded Ethan and Lena.
Watching.
Waiting.
Daniel cried out.
"Ethan!"
The ink chains around him began pulling him toward the Ink King.
"I'm trying!" Ethan shouted.
He lunged forward.
But one of the living shadows blocked his path.
It had no face.
Only an endless smile carved across smooth black skin.
Lena grabbed a fallen metal pipe and swung it at the creature.
The pipe passed straight through.
The shadow didn't move.
Instead...
It smiled wider.
The factory doors burst open.
People wearing ordinary clothes wandered inside.
None of them seemed aware of where they were.
Their eyes were empty.
Their movements slow.
Every one of them repeated the same sentence.
"The story must continue..."
"The story must continue..."
"The story must continue..."
Malachi spread his arms proudly.
"The Rewrite has begun."
"Soon there will be no difference between fiction and reality."
"The world will become the Ink King's greatest masterpiece."
Ethan refused to accept it.
He looked around desperately.
His eyes landed on Father Elias's journal, which had fallen from his coat during the struggle.
It lay open on the floor.
A page he had never seen before was glowing faintly.
Words were appearing by themselves.
He rushed toward it before anyone else noticed.
As he read the page, his heartbeat slowed.
It wasn't another warning.
It was a secret.
A way to stop the Ink King.
But the final line made his blood run cold.
"To rewrite the world... the writer must first surrender everything he loves."
Ethan slowly looked at Lena.
Then at Daniel.
The Ink King had not only begun rewriting the world.
It had forced Ethan to make an impossible choice.
And somewhere beyond the black sky...
Something far older than the Ink King opened its eyes.
