The Last Keeper
Chapter One: The storm arrived without warning. Rain hammered against the stained-glass windows of the ancient monastery perched high above the cliffs. Thunder rolled across the mountains like the growl of some unseen beast awakening from a long sleep. Father Elias stood alone in the underground chamber. His trembling hands gripped a lantern as he descended the stone steps leading beneath the monastery. The air grew colder with every step. Shadows stretched unnaturally along the walls, twisting and writhing as though alive. At the bottom of the staircase stood a massive iron door covered in strange symbols. The Seal. For over six hundred years, the Keepers of Ink had guarded what lay beyond it. Now Elias was the last. The others were dead. Every one of them. Some had vanished without a trace. Others were found lifeless beside pages filled with words they never wrote. And tonight, something had come for him. A loud bang echoed through the chamber. Elias spun around. Nothing. Only darkness. Yet he could feel it. Watching. Waiting. The old priest swallowed hard and inserted a rusted key into the lock. The door groaned open. Inside rested a black stone coffin bound in chains. The Magic Pen. Even from across the room, Elias felt its presence. The coffin seemed to breathe. The chains rattled softly. Then came the whisper. A voice so faint he almost mistook it for the wind. "Let me out..." Elias froze. "No." The whisper returned. Stronger. "Reality is waiting to be rewritten." The lantern flickered violently. The temperature dropped. Then every candle in the chamber extinguished at once. Darkness swallowed the room. A sharp sound echoed behind him. Footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Approaching. Elias turned. A figure stood at the entrance. Tall. Motionless. Its face hidden beneath a hood. Black ink dripped from its fingertips and pooled across the floor. The priest's heart nearly stopped. He recognized the creature from the forbidden records. The Ink King. The first owner of the Pen. The nightmare the Keepers had feared for centuries. "You should not exist," Elias whispered. The figure tilted its head. "You should not have kept me waiting." The chains around the coffin began rattling violently. The whispers grew louder. Hundreds of voices. Thousands. All speaking at once. Elias fell to his knees and clutched the silver cross around his neck. The room shook. Cracks spread across the walls. Dust rained from the ceiling. The seal was breaking. With trembling hands, Elias pulled a small journal from his robe. He opened the final page. The page was blank. He knew what he had to write. Dipping a pen into a small bottle of red ink, he scribbled a final warning. The words appeared shaky and uneven. DO NOT LET IT WRITE THE END. A deafening scream erupted through the chamber. The lantern exploded. The chains snapped. And darkness rushed forward. The last thing Father Elias heard was laughter. Ancient. Cold. Victorious. By dawn, the monastery stood silent. The underground chamber was empty. The coffin remained. The chains lay broken on the floor. And the Magic Pen was gone.
