Chapter 6

The success Ethan had always dreamed of was beginning to feel like a curse.

His horror novel had become a worldwide bestseller. Every bookstore wanted him. Every television station wanted an interview. Readers couldn't stop talking about his stories.

But Ethan no longer celebrated.

Every chapter he wrote with the Magic Pen came true.

Every nightmare escaped the page.

Every victim was real.

He stopped writing.

For three days, the Magic Pen remained locked inside the wooden box.

Yet every morning, he found it lying on his desk.

Waiting.

His publisher insisted he attend a book signing.

"You've canceled twice already," his editor said over the phone. "Your readers are excited to meet you."

With great reluctance, Ethan agreed.

The bookstore was overflowing with people. Fans stood in long lines, holding copies of his novel, eager for an autograph.

For a few hours, Ethan almost forgot his fear.

He smiled.

He laughed.

He thanked every reader who supported him.

Then she stepped forward.

She wore a simple white blouse beneath a black jacket, and her long dark hair rested over one shoulder. Unlike the others, she wasn't smiling because Ethan was famous.

She looked at him as though she had known him for years.

"Hi," she said softly, placing a copy of his novel on the table.

"I'm Lena."

Ethan looked up and smiled.

"I'm Ethan."

"I know," she replied with a small laugh. "I've been reading your work since your very first novel... before anyone else believed in you."

Her words caught him off guard.

"You read that one?"

"I still have a copy."

"It's terrible," Ethan joked.

Lena smiled.

"No."

"It was honest."

For the first time in weeks, Ethan laughed without forcing it.

As he signed her book, she asked, "Would you mind if I bought you a cup of coffee after this? I promise I won't ask for spoilers."

Ethan hesitated.

Then nodded.

"I'd like that."

The café across the street was quiet.

Rain tapped gently against the windows.

For nearly two hours, they talked.

Not about fame.

Not about horror.

Just life.

Lena worked as a librarian and had always loved old books and forgotten stories.

Ethan found himself enjoying her company far more than he expected.

"You know," Lena said, stirring her coffee, "your latest novel feels... different."

"Different how?"

"It feels real."

Ethan's smile faded.

Before he could answer, his phone vibrated.

Another news alert.

THREE MORE PEOPLE MISSING.

His stomach tightened.

The article included photographs of the missing people.

Ethan recognized every face.

They had attended today's book signing.

His hands began to shake.

"Lena..."

She looked at him.

"What is it?"

He silently handed her the phone.

She read the headline.

Then looked back at him.

"What happened?"

"I signed their books."

That evening, police released security footage from the bookstore.

The missing readers had all left the building safely.

Then, one by one, each stopped walking.

Each turned toward an empty alley.

As if someone had called their names.

Then they disappeared into the darkness.

None of them were seen again.

Unable to ignore the fear any longer, Ethan rushed home.

His apartment door was unlocked.

He was certain he had locked it.

Inside, everything looked normal.

Until he reached his writing desk.

The Magic Pen was lying across an open notebook.

Fresh black ink covered the page.

Ethan hadn't written a single word.

Yet a message waited for him.

Your readers belong to the story now.

His heart pounded.

Behind him, Lena slowly stepped into the apartment.

"I followed you," she admitted. "You looked terrified."

She noticed the message.

Her face turned pale.

"Ethan..."

Before she could finish speaking, another sentence appeared beneath the first.

Neither of them touched the Pen.

Neither of them moved.

They simply watched as the ink formed the final words by itself.

The next chapter begins with her.

Lena looked at Ethan.

Ethan looked back at her.

Outside, thunder rolled across the night sky.

For the first time...

They realized they were no longer reading the story.

They had become part of it.
