The Ink King

Chapter 8 Darkness swallowed the factory. No one moved. No one breathed. The only sound was the slow scratching of a pen writing across paper. Scratch... Scratch... Scratch... The sound echoed from every corner of the room. Ethan reached for Lena's hand. "I've got you," he whispered. "I'm here," Lena replied, her voice trembling. Then the candles burst back to life. The members of the Children of Ink had all dropped to their knees. Their heads were bowed. Their hands stretched toward the center of the room. Even Malachi, their leader, knelt without hesitation. "Rise," a deep voice commanded. It wasn't loud. Yet it filled every inch of the factory. The shadows in the center of the room began to move. Black ink seeped through the cracks in the concrete floor, spreading like living water. It twisted and swirled until it formed the shape of a man. At first, Ethan could only make out glowing white eyes. Then a long black cloak. Then hands that dripped with thick, endless ink. Finally, a face appeared. It had no mouth. No nose. Only two burning eyes. Where its face should have been, words crawled across smooth black skin, changing every second. Lena gasped. "What... is that?" Malachi lowered his head. "Our King." "The first writer." "The creator of the Magic Pen." "The Ink King." A freezing wind swept through the room. The Ink King slowly turned his head toward Ethan. Although it had no mouth, Ethan heard its voice clearly inside his mind. "You have written well." Ethan felt an unbearable pressure inside his skull. Images flooded his mind. Ancient kingdoms rising and falling. Cities swallowed by darkness. People disappearing with a single sentence. He saw countless writers before him. Every one of them eventually kneeling before the Pen. The vision ended as quickly as it began. Ethan collapsed to one knee, struggling to breathe. Lena rushed to his side. "Ethan!" "I'm... okay," he lied. The Ink King lifted one hand. The Magic Pen, still hidden inside Ethan's coat, began shaking violently. It wanted to leave him. It wanted to return. "No," Ethan whispered, gripping the wooden box tightly. The Pen shook harder. The box cracked. The iron latch snapped open. The Magic Pen floated into the air by itself. It hovered between Ethan and the Ink King. The Children of Ink began chanting in a language neither Ethan nor Lena understood. The factory walls trembled. Black ink started flowing down the walls like rain. Malachi smiled. "It remembers its true master." The Pen slowly drifted toward the Ink King. Ethan lunged forward. "No!" He caught the Pen just before it reached the creature. The instant his fingers touched it, a blinding light erupted through the factory. The chanting stopped. The Ink King staggered backward. For the first time... It seemed surprised. Malachi's smile vanished. "Impossible..." "The Pen rejected him." The Ink King's burning eyes remained fixed on Ethan. Then, slowly, another voice echoed through the room. A familiar voice. Weak. Distant. "Ethan..." Daniel. Ethan turned. Daniel had fallen to the floor. The unnatural smile had disappeared from his face. His eyes looked normal again. "Ethan..." he whispered. "Don't let... them have it." Before Ethan could reach him, black ink burst from beneath Daniel's feet and wrapped around his legs like chains. Daniel screamed. The Ink King raised one hand. The chains tightened. "Ethan!" Lena cried. "You have to choose!" "Daniel..." "...or the Pen!" Ethan's heart pounded. He had only seconds. If he let go of the Pen, the Ink King would reclaim it. If he held onto it... Daniel might die. The Ink King took another step forward. Its voice echoed through the factory. "Every story demands... a sacrifice." End of Chapter 8
