Chapter 4
The iron door slammed shut behind Noah and Lena with a deafening crash.
Darkness swallowed them.
For a few seconds, neither of them moved.
Then Lena struck a match.
Its tiny flame revealed a narrow stone staircase spiraling deep beneath the library.
The walls were stained with dried black ink.
Ancient symbols had been carved into the stone, though many had been scratched out—as if someone had desperately tried to erase them.
"Stay close," Lena whispered.
Noah nodded.
"Where are we?"
Lena hesitated.
"This place was built centuries before the city existed."
"The Keepers of Ink hid their greatest secrets here."
She looked down the staircase.
"And prayed no one would ever find them."
As they descended, Noah noticed something strange.
The deeper they went, the quieter the world became.
No wind.
No footsteps.
Not even the sound of their breathing.
It felt as though the staircase itself was swallowing every noise.
Suddenly, Noah stopped.
"Lena..."
She turned.
"What is it?"
He pointed at the wall.
There was a framed photograph hanging there.
It showed the city skyline.
Except...
Half of the buildings were missing.
"The city doesn't look like this."
Lena's face grew pale.
"It used to."
"What do you mean?"
She sighed.
"The Rewrite isn't just changing people."
"It's changing history."
When they finally reached the bottom, they found a massive underground chamber.
Hundreds of old maps covered the walls.
Lena picked one up.
"This is a map of the city from ten years ago."
Noah frowned.
"It's different."
Entire streets had disappeared.
Hospitals were gone.
Schools had moved.
Even the river flowed in another direction.
"That's impossible."
"No," Lena whispered.
"It's happening again."
Before Noah could answer, the map began changing.
The ink on the paper crawled like living insects.
Roads vanished.
New ones appeared.
Buildings shifted.
The city was rewriting itself.
Above ground...
A family drove home after dinner.
The father suddenly slammed on the brakes.
His wife looked up.
"What happened?"
He stared ahead in confusion.
"There was supposed to be a bridge here."
There wasn't.
Only empty space.
The bridge had never existed.
Or perhaps...
It had been erased.
Across the city, a hospital disappeared.
Not collapsed.
Not destroyed.
It simply ceased to exist.
Patients, doctors and nurses vanished with it.
People standing nearby blinked once.
Then continued walking as if nothing had happened.
No one remembered the hospital.
Except one frightened little girl.
She stood alone in the street, crying.
"My mummy is in there..."
People looked at her strangely.
"There has never been a hospital here."
Back underground, Lena opened a rusted metal cabinet.
Inside were dozens of old newspaper clippings.
Every headline described disasters that no longer existed.
One article caught Noah's attention.

The date was ten years old.
The photograph showed Ethan smiling beside Lena.
Noah looked up.
"This really happened?"
Lena's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
She gently touched Ethan's picture.
"He gave everything to save us."
"And the world forgot he ever lived."
A sudden whisper echoed through the chamber.
Not one voice.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
"They're remembering..."
"They're reading..."
"They're coming..."
The newspapers burst into black flames.
The maps tore themselves from the walls.
Books flew open.
Ink poured across the stone floor.
It rushed toward the center of the room, gathering into a familiar shape.
A tall man.
Wearing a long black coat.
His face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.
The Smiling Man.
Only this time...
There wasn't just one.
Another stepped from the shadows.
Then another.
Then another.
Dozens of identical smiling figures surrounded Noah and Lena.
Every one of them tilted its head.
Every one of them smiled.
And together, they spoke in one chilling voice.
"The city has forgotten..."
"...now it is your turn."
The lantern in Lena's hand went out.
The chamber plunged into darkness.
Then...
Someone grabbed Noah's shoulder.
It wasn't Lena.
