Chapter 2
Noah barely slept after the nightmare.
The leather journal remained on his desk exactly where he had found it. He had checked every door and window before going to bed. They were all locked.
No one could have entered his room.
Yet the journal was there.
He reached for it again.
The cover felt cold, almost as if it had been lying in snow.
Written across the front were two faded words.
ETHAN GRAVES
He slowly opened it.
The first page was blank.
So was the second.
He flipped through every page until he reached the end.
Nothing.
Not a single word.
"Why would someone keep an empty journal?" he murmured.
Just then, a drop of black ink appeared in the middle of the last page.
Then another.
The ink spread across the paper by itself, forming a sentence.
"Find Lena Brooks before they do."
Noah jumped back, knocking the journal onto the floor.
When he picked it up again...
The words were gone.
Only the blank pages remained.
That morning, the city felt different.
People walked through the streets as usual, but something wasn't right.
A woman stood in the middle of a busy road, staring at the sky.
Cars drove around her, horns blaring.
She didn't react.
She simply smiled.
A little boy tugged at her sleeve.
"Mum... let's go home."
The woman looked down at him with empty eyes.
"I'm sorry," she said softly.
"Who are you?"
The boy burst into tears.
At school, Noah couldn't concentrate.
His mind kept returning to the journal and the name written inside it.
Lena Brooks.
Who was she?
During history class, his teacher suddenly stopped speaking.
She stared at the whiteboard for nearly a minute.
Then she turned to the class.
"I'm sorry..."
"I've forgotten what I was teaching."
The students laughed.
But the teacher didn't.
She looked genuinely frightened.
As Noah walked through the hallway after class, he noticed his best friend, Tyler, standing by his locker.
"Hey," Noah called.
Tyler didn't answer.
He just stood there.
Smiling.
His eyes were fixed on the empty corridor ahead.
Noah waved a hand in front of his face.
Nothing.
"Tyler?"
Slowly, Tyler turned toward him.
His smile never faded.
"Have you ever wondered..."
"...who is writing us?"
Noah felt a chill run down his spine.
"What?"
Before Tyler could answer, the school bell rang.
Students flooded into the hallway.
When Noah looked back...
Tyler was gone.
His locker stood open.
Empty.
As if it had never belonged to anyone.
That evening, television stations interrupted their regular programs.
The news anchor looked unusually pale.
"We're receiving reports from across the country of people suffering sudden memory loss. Some have forgotten their names. Others no longer recognize their families."
Images flashed across the screen.
A doctor asking his own wife who she was.
A police officer unable to remember how to use his radio.
A bride staring at the groom during her wedding ceremony as though she had never seen him before.
Then came the strangest report of all.
Several people had been found standing perfectly still in public places.
None of them spoke.
None of them blinked.
They all wore the same disturbing smile.
Authorities had no explanation.
That night, Noah couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching him.
He picked up Ethan's journal once more.
This time, another sentence slowly appeared.
"The Empty Faces are only the beginning."
Before he could read any further—
A loud knock echoed through the house.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
His parents were asleep upstairs.
No one else seemed to hear it.
The knocking came again.
Slower.
Louder.
Noah walked cautiously to the front door.
His hand trembled as he unlocked it.
He pulled the door open.
No one was there.
Only a small package wrapped in old brown paper.
There was no address.
No sender.
Only three words written in black ink.
For Noah Carter.
He carried it inside and carefully untied the string.
Inside was an old black-and-white photograph.
It showed a young man and a woman standing together outside a bookstore.
The man was smiling.
The woman held his hand.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
Ethan Graves and Lena Brooks.
As Noah stared at the names, the lights in his house suddenly went out.
The room fell into complete darkness.
Then, from somewhere behind him, a woman's frightened voice whispered:
"Noah..."
"Don't let him finish the story."
Noah spun around.
There was no one there.
But the photograph in his hand had changed.
Ethan's face was gone.
As if someone had erased him from history.
