The Rules

Chapter 4 Ethan couldn't stop staring at the words. The story continues. The photograph on his phone trembled in his hand. Those words were impossible. He had written them in his notebook. He had never posted them online. He had never shown them to anyone. Yet somehow they had appeared at the crime scene. His heart pounded. For the first time since finding the pen, fear outweighed curiosity. He grabbed the notebook from his desk and flipped through its pages. Every sentence he had written with the feather pen was still there. Every wish. Every story. Every word. The black ink seemed darker than usual. As though it had sunk deep into the paper. Or deeper. Into reality itself. A sudden knock at the door made him jump. It was Lena. The moment she stepped inside, she noticed his pale face. "Ethan, what happened?" He hesitated. Then, for the first time, he told her everything. The antique shop. The feather pen. The notebook. The success of his novel. The businessman from the news. Everything. When he finished, silence filled the room. Lena stared at him. "You don't actually believe that pen caused someone's death, do you?" "I don't know what to believe anymore." She looked at the notebook. "Then let's find out." Before Ethan could stop her, she reached for the pen. The moment her fingers touched it, she gasped. Her hand snapped back. "What happened?" "It's freezing," she whispered. The color had drained from her face. Ethan knew exactly what she meant. He had felt it too. The pen was always cold. Unnaturally cold. As if it had never belonged in the world of the living. That night, neither of them slept. Instead, they searched for answers. Hours passed. Most of the internet searches led nowhere. Then Lena found something. A forgotten article hidden inside a digital archive. The article mentioned a monastery destroyed by fire decades ago. According to local legends, a secret group had once lived there. A group called The Keepers of Ink. Ethan's stomach tightened. The article included a photograph. Among the ruins stood an elderly priest. Father Elias. The same name that appeared repeatedly in an old note hidden inside the antique box. "What if he knew something about the pen?" Lena asked. "He probably did." As Ethan examined the article, a folded piece of paper slipped from the notebook. He frowned. He had never seen it before. Carefully, he unfolded it. The paper was old and yellow with age. The handwriting looked hurried. Desperate. At the top of the page were four words. RULES OF THE PEN Ethan exchanged a nervous glance with Lena. Then he began reading. --- Rule One Everything written becomes reality. --- A chill crawled down his spine. He already knew that part. His fame was proof. The murder was proof. Still, seeing it written made the truth feel heavier. More real. He continued. --- Rule Two The words cannot be erased. --- His mouth went dry. --- Rule Three Every creation requires a sacrifice. Nothing is given freely. Reality always collects its debt. --- Ethan froze. A sacrifice? His thoughts immediately returned to the businessman. Had his success cost another man's life? The possibility made him sick. But the list wasn't finished. --- Rule Four The Pen feeds on fear. The more fear it creates, the stronger it becomes. --- The room suddenly felt colder. Lena moved closer to him. Neither of them spoke. Ethan forced himself to read the final rule. --- Rule Five It must never fall into the wrong hands. If the Pen chooses darkness, the world will become its story. --- The silence that followed felt unbearable. Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance. Neither Ethan nor Lena noticed. They were both staring at the final line written beneath the rules. A line that looked fresher than the others. As if it had appeared recently. Perhaps even tonight. The message read: You are no longer the only one looking for it. A loud crash echoed from somewhere outside the apartment. Ethan rushed to the window. A man stood across the street. Tall. Thin. Perfectly still. The streetlights flickered around him. His face was hidden beneath the shadow of a hat. Yet somehow Ethan knew the stranger was staring directly at him. Watching. Waiting. And for the first time, Ethan realized something terrifying. The Pen had not simply changed his life. It had announced his existence to something else. Something that wanted the Magic Pen. Something that had finally found him. To Be Continued...
