ACE:
"Answer me, who cooked this food?" I asked the maid, as I drank from the bottle of water beside me.
Just then, my wife came out of the kitchen and she carried a tray of her own meal and was walking away toward the stairs.
"Madam cooked it. As your wedding anniversary meal," the maid replied in a trembling voice, and we all stopped eating as we were shocked.
"What? You mean you allowed Katherine to cook my food?" I asked the maid in shock, as my mother and siblings stopped eating.
However, my dad didn't care to stop as he licked his hands and enjoyed his meal.
"Yes, sir. Madam begged us to allow her to cook and said that you will like it and be happy with her as your wedding anniversary meal," the trembling maid replied, and I looked at Katherine who paused.
I never knew that she was a great chef like this.
I couldn't speak, and I managed to warn her, "You tried. But next time, allow the chef to do their job."
Katherine didn't say a word, and she ascended the stairs with her own meal, looking away from me. My eyes followed the contour of her waistline that was partly visible through her light nightgown.
I desired to have her, but seeing my family looking at me, I shifted my focus back to my meal and finished it.
No one said anything after hearing that Katherine was the one who had spent her time in the kitchen making this delicious soup. It reminded me of my grandmother's soup. Both my father's mother and my mother's mother used to prepare this native soup for us. I used to lick the whole plate, but I was ashamed to do it because my family were present. And also because I knew that they didn't like Katherine.
"Is there some extra meals left? I'm not satisfied?" My dad asked, not minding that my mother glared at him.
"No, sir. That's the last meal left. Your wife already threw the first set away," the trembling maid replied, and I recalled when I had arrived home with Naomi. I saw that my dining table was scattered with food on the table and on the floor.
"How dare you point fingers at me!" My mother yelled at the maid, and she trembled and lowered her gaze. "I'm sorry, ma."
"It's okay. Get out of my sight," my mother dismissed the maid, and the dining table fell in silence while I finished my own meal and ate my meat, before licking the plate to the last drop of soup.
The plate was shining clean, but it hadn't been washed out. As I ensured to lick it properly.
"Mmm," my siblings looked away from me and rolled their eyes, while I washed my hands and met Naomi's gaze on me.
****
KATHERINE.
I made my way to my room on the second floor and sat there to eat my food.
My mind still lingers on Ace's action earlier and how he was asking who had prepared the dinner. It was supposed to be our wedding anniversary night, yet the day had been traumatic.
I finished up my dinner and heard my phone ringing in my room.
I went to grab it, seeing that it was almost 11:30 pm.
Taking a deep breath, I answered the incoming call from my mother.
"Hello, Mom," I greeted her in a calm voice despite my broken state, and she replied happily, "Happy wedding anniversary to you, Kate. How are you and your husband doing? You know that I almost forgot that today was your wedding anniversary day, if not that Sage reminded me."
Sage Colter was my younger sister, she was 23, and I told my mother, "It's true, Mom. My day has been hectic. You know what it is like, living with Ace and his family. They don't want me as their son's wife, and I am considering filing for a divorce."
"No, no, no! You cannot divorce Ace. Katherine, did you forget that we made a promise to Ace's grandfather that you will be by his side and not leave him no matter what?" My mother reminded me, sternly, and tears welled up in my eyes.
"But, Mom. I am the one going through all these traumas here. Do you know what I went through today? You all are fine, and Ace's grandfather is no more!" I raised my voice at my mother and told her, "Life goes on, and I cannot continue to dwell in the past. I have to move on."
"Mmm..." My mother sighed and replied, "I understand, Kate. I understand and feel your pain. But have you done what I asked you to do? To see if you can win Ace's heart?" Mom asked, and I recalled how happily Ace was asking who had cooked the meal. But the moment he realized that I was the one, silence ensued in the dining room, and he warned me to stay away from his meals and allow their chef to do their job.
"I did, but it didn't work. Cooking isn't the way to win his heart. Not when he has an excellent chef that can prepare all sorts of assorted meals, including foreign meals," I lamented, understanding that my mother wanted me to use my good cooking skills to win Ace's heart. But if only he isn't living with his family.
"I understand, Kate. But you need to try. If cooking for him doesn't work, try to seduce him to sleep with you. So that you can have your son to inherit the Parker's group. That way, Grandpa Gideon's wealth wouldn't be disbursed to the orphanage homes across the city," Mom said and my gaze darkened.
