CHAPTER 29: A THREAT Bella sat on the sofa, her hands clasped across her stomach, cowering and quivering. Again, she took calming breaths. “I am safe. I’m safe now. He can’t hurt me. He can’t hurt me,” she said to herself. Images of her father flashed before her. She could never get those images of his bulky figure hovering over her, taunting her, injuring her over and over throughout her childhood. Jamie sneaked up on her. Her body shuddering and her breath shallow again. “My God, Bella. You look so pale.” She sat beside her and pulled her close, stroking her shoulder. “It’s all fine. He is gone now and the detective is on his way.” Bella had no speech, her body frozen in shock now. “I will make us a cup of tea.” Jamie rose. Bella’s surroundings appeared surreal.
