Kieran was so stunned that Zack Wild was still alive, when he had been sure he was dead, that for several long seconds he simply lay on top of him. He didn’t recover until he felt Zack shift under him; it was an involuntary movement brought on by a spasm of pain, but he didn’t know that.
Unsure what the man beneath him was doing, and keen to finish him off quickly so he could get back to what he was doing, Kieran elbowed Zack in the face, and then pushed himself up so he could hit him again with more force.
Three more times he hit him, twice in the stomach, and again in the face, rocking Zack’s head back as he tried to lift it, so it struck the floor. When he saw that the author was still, Kieran started to his feet to give himself space to use the shotgun he had picked up again.
