Melissa was halfway to town with Zack and her prisoner, Thomas Greene, when they were almost run off the road.
She was driving as carefully as her reflexes would allow, but that didn’t matter when the other car came haring around the bend far faster than it was safe to be driving in such conditions. She had some warning that there was a vehicle approaching, for the glow from its headlights was visible through the rain and the gloom even before it reached the bend. The glow only told her that there was another vehicle out there, though, not that it was going so fast, nor that it was being driven by a maniac.
