CHAPTER ONE: The Last Days Of Mrs Matthews
Eva Moralis stepped out of the Obstetrician's office slowly, her eyesight faint as she looked around, still clutching the piece of paper that the clinic had given to her.
She walked to the side of the road and held out her hand, hailing a taxi.
She had no idea how long she stood there with her hand out but soon, a taxi materialized and she got in.
"Where to Miss?", The old driver called.
"Corner of West and fourth", She whispered quietly.
The man took a look at her through the rearview mirror.
"Are you okay Miss?", He called, sounding concerned.
Eva raised her head up and smiled softly as she squeezed the piece of paper in her hand.
"I am", She replied and relaxed back in to the seat when he began to drive.
Her eyes gradually fell to the paper and the tears she had held at bay threatened to pour out.
Eva held back because she knew that if she began to cry, she would never stop.
She stared out of the window for the rest of the ride.
She was at her destination ten minutes later.
She paid, adding quite a large tip before she made her way into the building.
She took the elevator to the fifth floor and walked straight into the first office she came across.
The receptionist gave her a look.
"Ma'am, we weren't expecting you. You have no appointment for today", She said to Eva.
Eva paid her no mind and headed straight for the main office.
She walked in and closed the door behind her.
"Eva, I don't think we were supposed to meet today", the woman who sat in the office said as she slowly observed Eva.
Eva turned to her, she was Erica Heard, a renowned divorce attorney and someone Eva had been coming to for the last three months.
"Help me, Erica", Eva muttered a second before the tears began to pour out.
Erica rushed to her and hugged her.
She asked no questions and just held Eva till she stopped crying.
"What happened?", Erica finally asked.
Eva held out the paper that she had been squeezing all day and began to smoothen it out.
"This is the receipt from the clinic. It's the receipt for a D&C session Erica", Eva whispered.
Erica's face clouded as she soon understood what it was that had happened, nevertheless, Eva Continued.
"When Jake arrived from work yesterday, he was angry that the court had sent the divorce papers to his work place and some of his co-workers had seen it. He said I had disgraced him and began to hit me. When he was done, I couldn't get up so I just laid there for hours and eventually fell asleep", Eva paused and accepted the tissue that Erica had extended to her to wipe her face.
"I was finally able to stand up and when I did, I realized that I had been bleeding for a while. I rushed to the clinic and they told me that my baby was dead, and that I needed to undergo a D&C to get its body out of me".
She wiped her tears aggressively and looked at Erica.
"The first money I spent on my baby was to flush it out", She said as she held the receipt up, staring at what her baby had amounted to.
"I can't do this anymore Erica, I don't know what you need to do but I want the process expedited. I'm not going to remain that bastard's wife for even a day more", She said as she stared desperately at the lawyer.
Erica sighed.
"This is not usually done but I'll find a way.Stay here", Erica instructed as she left the office.
The case was charged to a family court where an intent to harm if the divorce process wasn't expedited was established.
But Jake Matthews still refused to sign the divorce papers.
Angry, desperate for peace and tired of his bullshit, Eva decided to take matters into her own hands.
On that day, She spent her entire morning packing everything that belonged to her and moving them to her car.
And just before noon, she took out a hard- drive that she had kept for a rainy day, it contained videos of her husband and his various mistresses.
Since she could not print the video, Eva took her time, printing various screenshots of these tapes, ensuring that her husband and his Mistresses faces were all well highlighted.
After printing dozens of copies of these, she grabbed their divorce papers and headed to his office.
She had come at noon when she knew people would be out and about to get lunch, coffee and its likes.
As soon as she was in the building, she began to distribute fliers of her husband and his Mistresses in compromising situations while simultaneously searching for him.
She found him at the cafeteria having lunch with his team and smiling like he was a human being too.
She did not approach as she was intent on passing out every single picture that she printed.
"Eva! What are you doing here?", Her husband called from across the cafeteria.
Eva paid him no mind and continued to distribute copies of the pictures.
"Honey, you're pregnant. What do you think you are doing?", Jake called as he approached her.
Eva burst into laughter.
"Pregnant? Oh, I guess I didn't tell you. After you beat me up two weeks ago, I lost the baby, I'm really sorry. I should have told you", She said as she handed him the divorce papers again.
Jake bit his lip angrily as he stepped closer to her.
"What do you think you're doing?", He whispered angrily.
"Nothing much, just getting free from you. Sign those papers now!", She instructed as she pushed the last two copies of her screenshots into his hands.
Jake's eyes bulged when he saw what she had been sharing around.
He took a quick look around the cafeteria and was met with the Judging and disgusted looks of the colleagues he had always put on a front to.
"Sign those papers if you don't want me to post the videos on your company's homepage", She told him.
Jake picked up the paper and signed it slowly.
"Don't you think you can get away from me! You are mine! I will search for you to the ends of the Earth if need be and keep you as mine! You loved me once and I can make sure you love me forever", He threatened as he signed the papers.
Eva laughed.
"No, I'm not yours. You should get takeout for dinner because I won't be there tonight. Goodbye and I hope the rest of your life remains fuxked", Eva whispered as she ran out of the cafeteria, laughing and whooping at the top of her lungs.
