Chapter 1
I drove into a small town in my red jeep, I came into the town Autumn Grove, it was in the middle of fall and yellow and orange leaves fell from trees and the air was cool. I was trying to get away from the big city and into a small life, ever since I got done with one of my books and was successfully being sold to millions of readers, and yet, I had a huge writers block.
I didn't know what else to write next, I like writing mystery books, so when I had looked up haunting places to visit, I saw Autumn Grove, a small town with small people, and yet a big mystery that was never solved.I immediately booked a flight to Autumn Grove in Europe from New York, ever since I got on that plane I've been thinking of nothing except to get to Autumn Grove and get inspiration.
I was smiling, excited to finally have a story in mind, it's been a month since I had publish any book, and my readers were already questioning if there will be any other book, I told them I would publish a book in either winter or spring. Time was running out.
I watched as the town's people walked past, I was heading toward the motel in town, ready to get settle in and get to the bottom of this mystery.
Sorry, too much Scooby-Doo...
I drove my jeep into the small parking lot of the small motel, I got out and opened my trunk, gather my two suitcases. I was thinking of staying in Autumn Grove for a week or two, just to get ideas and then leave to get started on my book in New York.
I grabbed my phone from the cup holder and set it in my back pocket, I gazed my surroundings, taking in the free air and quietness. It was nothing like New York City. No traffic, no muggers, no sirens or shouting angry mobs, and no rude people. Well atleast I hope not.
I brought my phone from my pocket and look at the top to see if there was signal.
And oh, I just realized something... No service.
I sighed, well I did wanted a small peaceful town, I guess that means no cell phones. I stuck my phone back into my pocket, I closed my door and bent down to pick up my suitcases, I pulled the handles out of them and walked over to the motel, opened the door and walked in.
It was small, I'll tell you that, actually you might as well think that since it's a small town it'll just be small.
The room was a beige color, with two couches at the walls, a coffee table in the middle with some magazines. A ceiling fan was rotating slowly, making a rattling noise. There was a counter at the far end of the room, steps leading to the upstairs.
A middle age woman with glasses sat behind the counter, a shelf with box shapes behind her, some held envelopes and some were empty. I went up to the counter, I set my suitcases down, the woman looked up from her computer that she was starring at.
She looked me up and down,"You must be Miss Laura Jackson," she said when she was done examining me. I nodded,"Yes, I had a reservation for a room."
"How long are you thinking of staying Miss Jackson?"
I bit my lower lip,"A week or two?"
"You'll have to pay for extra time to stay." she said.
"How much?" I asked.
She examined me up and down again, a small smile creeps up her lips,"A hundred dollars." she said,"Cash only, no credit cards or checks."
I sighed as I dug into my wallet, I pulled out a hundred bill out, I heard a creaking noise, I looked up and saw that the woman was leaning over the counter, when she saw me staring at her she leaned back quickly and pretended to swat a fly.
I held out the hundred bill, she took it and stared at it wide eyes,"And where are you from again?" she asked.
"New York City, America." I replied.
She nodded,"The big folks territory, how nice." she bent down and handed me a key with a chain,"Room sixteen, first floor. Up the stairs." she said pointing to the stairs.
I nodded and grabbed my suitcases, I put the handle back in so I could carry the suitcases up.
I went up the stairs making a lot of noises, the stairs seemed to be so closed to the walls! Each time I hit the wall, the woman would look up with a raised eyebrows.
I gave her a sheepish smile and acted as if this was normal, when she looked away, I picked up one of my suitcases and threw it into the hallway, then I grabbed the other one and speed walked up the stairs.
