Just another morning

Luna’s POV As I walk into the kitchen I sling my backpack into the nook in the corner, accidentally scraping the table and making it shake just enough to slosh mom's coffee. Golden brown eyes snap up to me glaring as I cringe a little and hold my hands up in front of me in surrender “Sorry mom! I didn’t mean to I swear.” She lets out a sigh while grabbing a paper towel to wipe up the spilled coffee, “It’s fine dear, I’m just on edge is all. Y’all’s birthday is in 5 days and I have yet to find a venue to have it. With my promotion at work, it has been almost impossible to have time for myself to plan anything here at home! Thank goodness we can afford a housekeeper or this place would look like... well, like 3 teenagers live here alone.” She chuckled at her own joke and stood to throw the coffee-soaked napkin away. “Wow, thanks mom... we aren’t that bad.” I rolled my eyes as I set the galloon of milk I’d grabbed from the fridge onto the counter, a bowl from the cabinet soon joined it. Moving towards the pantry I grabbed my favorite cereal from off the shelf and opened it as I walked back to the counter. “Lucky charms Luna? Are you 5?” My mom rolled her eyes and placed her half-full coffee mug in the sink. “It’s simple and fast, after taking the bathroom for myself this morning I’ll have to be extra quick with breakfast, or else thing one and thing two will leave me behind to walk to school.” I shrug as I pour some milk in my bowl followed by my cereal, just as I’m about to close the box it’s snatched from my hands. “Hey! That’s mine, Orion! You have your own box in the pantry.” “You’re the only person I know who puts their milk in the bowl before their cereal, it has to be a sure sign you’re a serial killer in the making.” Silvery blue eyes flash amusement as they meet my own and I can’t help but roll my eyes and growl at my brother as he shoves his hands in my cereal box. I can’t do anything to stop him, if I try to snatch it he’ll just raise it above my head. Being so short seriously pisses me off sometimes. “Just keep it, I don’t want it once your grubby hands have been in it anyways.” Grabbing my bowl of cereal I move to the table and sit in the seat my mother vacated. “Now Orion, just because you’re bigger doesn’t mean you can pick on your little sister.” Mom is always trying to defend me, though often insulting while doing so and she doesn't even realize. “Mom! We’re the same age for crying out loud! In fact, I was first born so I’m technically the big sister!” My whining doesn’t help my “baby” status in the family, but come on, I’m not the baby and I’m pretty sick of my family not understanding that. Though I chuckle as I see my mom playfully smack my brother in the back of the head and grumble “Be Nice.” Under her breath. “Come on Celeste! I can’t be late or the coach will have my head!” Orion’s unexpected hollering made me jump a little, when he meant something or gave an order at school his voice boomed and made people want to listen, it was one of the reasons he made such a good football captain. His teams mates liked and respected him and followed his orders without question. I finished off the last of the milk in my bowl as Celeste came striding into the kitchen on 4-inch heels, flipping her gently curled hair over her shoulder and putting her purse over her arm as she applied chapstick. With naturally dark pink lips she didn’t need lip color for everyday life. After putting the top back on her chapstick she looked between me and Orion impatiently. “Well? Are we going?” Putting my bowl in the sink I kissed mom on the cheek and waved goodbye before grabbing my backpack and running out the door behind Orion and Celeste. They’d already made it to our little red Honda and Orion had the passenger seat leaned up so I could climb in the back seat, as the shortest it was only natural I always got the back seat. As we backed out the driveway my siblings started talking about the football game coming up this Friday and the party after, not my scene so I put my headphones on my ears and started my playlist, watching the scenery pass by out the window as we drive to school. School came into view and soon I was hopping out of the back seat and rushing towards the school. I hate walking in with Celeste and Orion, they were always surrounded by their friends within seconds and I was always ignored and pushed out of the group. It’s easier to pretend it doesn’t hurt me if I don’t let it happen often, one of the reasons I was not excited for our birthday party, I had one friend to invite, while my siblings would invite half the school. Pushing open the front doors to the school I made my way through the hallways to my locker, I had just opened it and put my bag up when I was tackled from behind. “What in the world Libby! You almost made me kiss my locker.” Turning around I gave her a big hug before shutting my locker. “What’s up buttercup?” Libby moved two lockers down to her locker and started taking out books and shoving her backpack in. “Nothing much just super stoked for your birthday bash! Can't believe you’ll be 18!” “You mean Orion and Celeste’s birthday bash? The only person I’m interested in hanging out with is you and I’d be happy to just have a movie marathon and gorge ourselves on junk food.” I gave her a pointed look while I shifted my books from one arm to the other “We both know the only people who care about my birthday are you and my mom.” Having situated her books and folders in her arms Libby and I started walking towards our first-period class, me and Libby share every class except last period, which is elective. While I enjoy art and drawing Libby enjoys singing, so I signed up for art and she signed up for the chorus. We were almost to first period when I noticed an odd smell, a good odd, but odd. Looking up and down the hallway as if I could find what it was, it smelled like beach oak and sandalwood, something in me told me to follow that smell but I shook my head to clear it and shrugged it off. Most likely someone was wearing a new cologne that was attractive to me. As the bell rang announcing first periods start Libby and I turned into math class and found our desks.
