Luna’s POV:
His eyes were glowing. I felt frightened and fascinated all at once. When Orion moved forward like he planned to take on Vespian, my mind rebelled at the idea. Well, at least a voice in my mind did. My head filled with whimpering as Ellie watched through my eyes as my brother and our ‘Mate’ stand off against one another. She was not scared of Vespian’s glowing eyes, she was overjoyed by them, the glowing color meant something to her that I didn’t understand.
‘Her? I’m talking about a voice in my head! I’m really losing it.’
“You aren’t losing anything dear; you are gaining it. I am awesome if I do say so myself and you and I are going to make an amazing team. You just have to open your mind and accept that there are some things outside your realm of reality.” Ellie's soft voice filled my head once again, this time the sound didn’t make me jump or gasp.
“I’m not going to fight you, Orion.” Vespian looked exasperated at this point, he was trying to explain something and no one was listening or understanding him.
“If you want one of my sisters, you’ll have to go through me, and trust me, that won’t be easy.” I mentally rolled my eyes at this, Orion thought me and Celeste would no be able to defend ourselves if it came down to it.
“Calm down Orion, I’m not after your sisters, I was just worried about all of you. I feel a-“ Pausing as if he was trying to find the words but failed, Vespian looked like he was treading water and about to lose the fight, he looked cute when he was trying to find his footing. “A sexy cute.” Said Ellie, the voice who refused to leave my mind.
“I feel a pull towards Luna, and I’m sure if you asked her she’d tell you she feels a pull towards me as well, I just want her safe.” As he finished explaining Vespian looked towards me and the direct power of those deep blue eyes meeting mine made my insides melt and goosebumps raise on my arm. Was he saying he felt the same way I did?
“Luna?” I heard Orion’s soft voice questioning me, asking if what the man before us said was true. I couldn’t lie to my brother.
“He’s right,” I spoke low, the fact that he was right scared me half to death, what did this mean for me? What was happening? “He’s ours. Vespian is our mate. He’s ours, Luna.” Ellie's voice was almost a whimper, she was begging me to understand. To accept what she said as true. “Ellie says he’s ‘ours’ she keeps saying ‘our mate’ in my head, she wants me to go to him. I don’t understand what’s going on Orion.” I knew my voice wavered, I knew some of the fear and confusion I felt was coloring my words. Looking over at Vespian I implored him with my eyes to tell me what was going on. “What did you do to me?” I know I sounded accusing, but I couldn’t help it, everything weird starting happening the second I met him this had to be his fault. “I saw your eyes glow, we all did. What are you? What did you do to me?” I could feel the tears rimming my eyes and I tried to blink them away, I wanted answers, and I wanted them now.
“Luna, I-“ he paused mid-sentence, once again he was short on words to explain this to me. I didn’t care, I wanted to understand, and only he could explain this. “I didn’t do anything, I promise. My eyes glowed because of Eli.” The voice in my head perked up at the name, she was listening intently now though I didn’t understand why. “Elijah.”
Ellie purred in my mind at the name. “Elijah, my mates' name is Elijah!” She was jumping in my head with excitement, and howling? Why was the voice in my mind howling?
“He’s the voice in my head. I share a body and mind with him.” This all sounded crazy, but who was I to judge, I currently was experiencing the same phenomenon, I guess we could be crazy together.
“You could certainly share a padded room with someone that hot.” Ellie snickered. I mentally rolled my eyes at her, she was basically a horny teenager apparently, but she wasn’t wrong.
“I know it sounds crazy and I’m sorry for that, but I don’t know how to explain this.” Vespian looked exhausted, like trying to figure out how to explain all of this to me was tiring.
“Our mate is trying to keep you calm and prevent you from running for the hills, I can’t blame him, you seem like the runaway kind of girl like you aren’t a huge fan of conflict.” I could feel her roll her eyes at me, exasperated and annoyed, in her opinion I should have accepted everything that had happened and been ecstatic about it.
“Why do you keep calling Vespian our mate?”
“Because he is our mate, Luna. He’s the other half to your soul and inside him is the other half to mine.” Her words were so beautiful and matter of fact that I wanted so bad to believe her.
I watched as Vespian opened his mouth to say more, but just before he could a horrid smell entered the clearing, I scrunched my nose up and noticed Celeste and Orion do the same when I glanced at Vespian his face was frozen in a state of shock and worry. He knew what the smell was, and clearly, it wasn’t good. “Orion, take your sisters back to the school. Now.” This time Vespian’s words held the kind of power Orion’s did when he needed everyone to listen and obey, there was a force in the tone that made you want to listen and do as told. As I watched Vespian, he began undressing, taking off his vest and shirt, showing rippling muscles and Sunkissed skin, I knew I should look away, but I couldn’t, I caught his eyes as he looked at me, and all I saw was regret and sadness. “I’m sorry you have to find out this way Luna. Please run, if you are here I will not be able to focus on the fight, I’ll be focused on your safety.” His eyes left mine and trained on Orion as he kicked his shoes off. “Get them out of here Orion, trust me when I say you do not want one of them taking your sisters.”
Before I could process his words I heard paw beats in the leaves and then steps being taken into the clearing. Twisting around I watched as three huge wolves entered the clearing, much bigger than I had ever seen wolves before. Seconds later I heard cloth ripping and a deep growl shook the trees around us, I watched in utter shock as the man I had been talking to transformed himself into a huge wolf and jumped over me and my siblings, landing in between us and the wolves that had entered the clearing. I had only thought the three wolves were big. The new wolf was even bigger, standing taller than even Orion, with a solid black sleek coat that I wanted to reach out and run my hands through.
Orion and Celeste were frozen in place beside me, far more shocked than I was. As we watched, the big black wolf attacked the three smaller wolves, he jumped on the middle one first and in a flash it had its mouth around the smaller wolf's throat and a snap told me he was dead instantly. The other two wolves moved to help their brethren but failed and decided on different courses last second, one jumped on the black wolf's back, biting into his shoulder and eliciting a howl of pain from him, the other wolf move towards use.
Orion jumped in front of me and Celeste, raising his hands to push us behind him as he backed away from the rabid animal now snarling at us, but it didn’t matter, as soon as the bigger wolf noticed, he flipped around and caught the vicious animal by his hind leg with his teeth, yanking him back towards himself and the other rabid wolf. I blinked and before I looked back I heard a second snap and another wolf hit the ground, dead. The third back away, whimpering at the pain in his back leg, but ultimately deciding his life wasn’t worth it, he tucked tail and turned and ran from the clearing.
The black wolf turned towards us, his eyes glowing a yellow gold similar to the color Vespian’s eyes had glowed only minutes ago. Had that only been minutes? It felt like hours now.
“It’s Elijah.” Said Ellie matter of factly.
“What?”
She sighed and did that eye-roll thing again towards me. “The black wolf. You keep thinking of him as ‘the black wolf’ or the ‘bigger one’, his name is Elijah. He’s Vespians wolf.”
“Vespian’s wolf?” I asked her confused.
“Vespian is in the body of the wolf with Elijah, he’s a werewolf, Elijah is his wolf spirit.”
“Werewolf?!” I hollered at her. Yup, crazy.
Those glowing eyes were looking at me with worry and fear. Padding over slowly he lowered himself onto the ground in front of us with a whimper, the wound on his back must be hurting him greatly. I moved to step towards him but Orion scoffed and pushed me back.
“No way Luna. Stay back.”
“But Orion he’s hurt and he did just save our lives. I think we owe him some trust and some compassion.” Orion didn’t look thrilled but he nodded his head in agreement.
“Fine, but be careful.”
As I stepped towards the wolf I held my hand out for him to sniff, I needed him to know I came in peace. “Hello big fellow, I just want to look at your back and make sure you’re okay.” He pushed his muzzle into my hand and I moved my hand up between his eyes and rubbed his head, scratching him between the ears gently. “It’s okay, boy.” His eyes met mine and I saw the same look I had seen in Vespian’s earlier, in the cafeteria. “Vespian?” I whispered. The wolf nodded his head and gently licked my arm.
“This is all too much!” I heard Celeste jumble out behind me. “I’ve reached my quota for weird now, what the hell is going on!”
“I think that wolf is-“ Orion slid a hand over his face incredulously “I think that’s Vespian.”
“I know that Orion! I saw him transform when you did, I know that’s Vespian, what I want to know is why? And How?” Celeste was watching me and Vespian, she looked like she was on the verge of a mental breakdown, and personally, I understood completely.
“Ellie says he’s a werewolf.” Petting Vespians silk soft head I watched as he nodded his head. Looking around the clearing I gasped and jumped to my feet. “Y’all, I think we may be as well!”
Orion and Celeste looked at me as if I grew two heads, I pointed to the two bodies in the clearing. Where two dead wolves had laid were now to dead human bodies. Both naked and covered in blood and wounds. “Remember what mom said? How she met dad. It makes sense. Dad was a werewolf!”
