Uncertainty

Vespian POV; “Impossible, they're a myth,” I stated, but the soft basis behind me made me rethink my statement. Before I could turn around and demand to know why they weren’t also scoffing at the very idea of Night Walker being anything but myth, my mate's voice spoke up. “Night Walkers? That sounds like something out of a TV show mom, like Game of Thrones.” Luna lifted her hand and placed it on her mom's shoulder trying to make eye contact. “No, those are White Walkers” a deep voice came from the right of us, Luna and I both whipped our heads up to look at the guard we didn't know was even in the room. “Not important,” I growled at him, as I looked away from the nameless guard and back at Luna’s mother. “Was just saying…” the disgruntled guard muttered to himself. I rolled my eyes and pushed him from my mind, focusing on the problem at hand. “That’s impossible.” Muttered Luna April under her breath, so low that if I wasn’t an Alpha I wouldn’t have heard her. “They haven’t been seen in so long, there is no way they are still around, we would have heard something before now. Right?” “I would think.” Alpha Darius answered, keeping his voice as low as his Luna’s, this conversation was meant to be kept private. “Then again, the entire reason they were called Night Walkers was that they were as quiet and mysterious as the night.” As I turned around to demand to know the extent of their knowledge about Night Walkers, Luna spun around and faced the Alpha pair with her finger waving at them and a hand angrily on her hip like a mother scolding her naughty children, I would chuckle if not for two things: one, she was adorable, and two, this was a serious situation. I often have a problem with laughing in uncomfortable situations. My mother says it’s a coping mechanism. Anyway, not important. “Stop whispering back there and share your opinions and stories with all of us!" Luna began ranting rather loudly, that adorable finger just a wagging. "Clearly these White Walkers-" "Night Walkers!" The Guard from before pipped in. "Whatever they are called!". Luna hollered, throwing her arms in the air in exasperation, before placing her left hand back on her hip and her right hand over her eyes, she let out a long sigh, as if she was too tired to deal with anyone this. She probably was, her life had been turned upside down and around in such a short time. I was still surprised she was handling everything so well and with such grace. “Because she is a natural Luna. She is amazing, just as I always said our mate would be.” Stated Eli proudly. “Quincy, leave us please.” Alpha Darius commanded. The guard nodded his head and turned to leave, shoulders defeated as if he had failed. “No.” Came Luna’s soft voice. “Please don’t send him out, he was only trying to help. And he gave me the little kick I needed to calm down.” I watched as my Little Luna smiled towards the guard who was now turned towards her beaming like a toddler seeing their favorite toy fixed after being broken. I felt a heat building in my chest as I watched them, it was friendly, innocent, nothing to get angry about. And yet, I felt jealousy burning through my chest, a growl burning up into my throat that I couldn’t hold back. She was mine. Her smiles, her glances, her beautiful face. It was all mine, and yet he was watching her as if she was an Angel. I could feel the hairs on my arms standing on end, my canines lengthening, as I stepped closer to him, to the one who wanted what was mine. ‘Wait, no. This isn’t right.’ I thought, I closed my eyes, pressing them closed as hard as I could, bringing the palms of my hands up to press into my eye sockets. I was trying to bring myself under control even as I was being forced to slowly shift. ‘That’s it!’ “Eli stop!” I commanded, pouring every ounce of power I could into those words. My wolf was attempting to take over, forcing me to think and feel and do what he wanted. He didn’t like other unclaimed males near our unmarked mate and he was trying to force me to make a statement here and now, look at my mate and die. “He is asking for it! He dares to look upon what is OURS! He must pay.” Eli growled back, and I was scared that I would be unable to reign him in before someone got hurt. “Eli.” I hear a soft melodic voice purr in my head. I don’t recognize it, but Eli calms down instantly, letting go of his hold on my body I feel my teeth shrinking back to human size, the hairs on my arms go back to normal. “Ellie.” Eli purrs back. My big bad Alpha wolf is purring. “My Ellie.” I can feel a soft brushing in my mind, as if Ellie is sharing the feeling of rubbing up against us, against Eli. I’ve never felt the sensation before, I’d never met another wolf that could project its thoughts into another wolf's mind, much less one that could share a feeling in such a way. Ellis was exceedingly special. As my blood calmed and my heart rhythm slowed I felt a gentle touch on my arm. Lowering my arms slowly I squinted my eyes open, hoping that a glance at Quincy wouldn’t start the rampage all over again, but the young guard was gone. All I saw was my beautiful Luna in front of me, so small and dainty, and innocent. Her beautiful honey eyes watching me closely. “I’m fine Luna, really. Eli just has some jealousy issues he needs to work on is all.” Looking into her beautiful eyes and having her so close, her warm, delicious scent surrounding me, I couldn't help but close my eyes, lean forward, and kiss the top of her head softly, breathing that beautiful calming scent deeply into my lungs. I hear her do the same, breathing my scent into her body, and I feel myself stir, the idea of her enjoying my scent gets my mind running wild with the idea of what we could do if we were alone and surrounded by only our pheromones. I feel Luna pull away from me, and I open my eyes to watch as she turns back to the Alpha and Luna, this time her arms are crossed and she’s calm as she continues her earlier questions again. “These Night Walkers are something serious, and according to my mother, they not only went after my father but will come after me and my brother and sister. Anything you know should be shared.” Seeing the furrowing of Alpha Darius’s brow Luna added softly, “Respectfully, Alph and Luna.” Alpha Darius and Luna April looked at each other and shared a look before Luna April turned back to Luna with a sad smile on her face and nodded her head. “Of course. You are entitled to know what you are up against.” “Let us return to the study and discuss this in privacy.” Alpha Darius added, motioning towards the stairs. Luna looked back at her mom, and after a brief internal argument with herself that I watched play out in her expressive face, I knew she was going to decline. Her mother was not in the state to discuss this right now, and I was inclined to agree. Since she had mentioned the Night Walkers she hadn’t moved or said a word, she seemed to be in a trance almost. “How about I help y’all home for now and Alpha Darius and Luna April can come later when your mom is feeling better, and discuss this?” I offered to Luna, she was having an internal battle with herself when all she needed to worry about was her mother. “I think that would be best.” Luna muttered with a sad smile, “She isn’t acting her self and I want to get her home. All of this has been so much to take in… I think we just need a moment to breathe and register what has happened.” “I understand,” Alpha Darius said as he stepped forward and moved towards the front door. “Have Orion Slade bring his mother’s car closer please.” He said to a guard outside the door. “Yes, Alpha.” The unseen guard uttered before footsteps jogged away, moments later I heard the crunch of gravel out the door and the sound of a door shutting. More footsteps signaled the arrival of Orion on the front porch before he came into view. “Come on mom,” Luna said softly as she walked to her mother and placed her arm around her waist. “Let’s go home, we’ll figure all of this out soon.” “Soon.” Mrs. Slade mattered softly as her feet shuffled towards the door. “Queen Slade,” Eli said. “I can come and help.” As I moved towards the door and my mate her brother turned towards me and frowned, he looked like he wanted to argue, but before he could Luna shook her head and muttered over her shoulder “No Vespian, we need time, all of us, please respect that.” Her honey eyes met mine before the door closed behind her. Soon I heard the doors of the car close and the rev of the engine as it drove away, taking my mate and our uncertain future, along with it.
