Luna POV:
“Tap.”
“What was that?” Ellie’s very groggy voice filled my mind.
Opening my eyes I realized two things immediately. The first was that it wasn’t yet morning, I knew this because it was still dark. The second thing was that I was surprised at how happy I was that yesterday’s events hadn’t just been a very vivid dream. Ellie was still here, which meant so to would Vespian still be around.
“Tap tap.”
“What is that sound?” Asked Ellie a bit more awake now. She was going on high alert.
I turned towards the window just as I heard another tap on the glass, it sounded like pebbles. Rubbing my eyes I threw my blankets off if me and shuffled over to the window, pulling back the curtains I looked out into the dark back yard, but surprisingly my vision seemed to light everything up as if I was wearing night vision goggles.
“Wolf night vision. I’m lending you my night vision.” Ellie muttered, distracted as she searched through my eyes for whoever or whatever was making that noise. “Ah ha! There!”
I saw the figure at the same time and got a moment my heart skipped a beat, afraid did what was in my backyard and trying to get my attention. But a split second later I realized it was Libby, with her hand held up to throw another pebble. She must have seen me though because the pebble never left her hand, instead that hand started waving. I unlocked my window and slid it up, sticking my head out to talk to my insane best friend.
“Libby! What are you doing? The woods aren’t safe at night.” My mind flashed back to the rouges in the forest behind the school and I’d hate to think if Libby taking them on alone.
Libby chuckled and shook her head. “They’re safer at night when hunters aren’t out and about.”
“What about rouges though?” I half whispered half shouted. Looking around the yard and forest edge as if there were a human hiding near by listening to us.
“Theses woods are protected by the pack, Alpha Darius is very careful with his security. Trust me, I’m perfectly safe out there. Anyways, I want to come up!” I heard the other pebbles in her hand hit the ground and her wiping her hands on her jeans.
“Okay Lib, hold on, I’ll come down and unlock the door.” As I turned to close the window Libby waved her hands above her head and grinned.
“Don’t worry about all that, just leave the window open and stand back!” With that she stripped off her pants and t-shirt and balled them up before sending them soaring through the window. As many times as me and Libby had spent the night together I’d seen her naked before when changing or jumping in the shower, but I’d never seen her strip down where anyone could see her. “Stand back Luna, and prepare to be amazed.”
In the blink of an eyes Libby went from standing nude in my yard to a large wolf standing in her place, no where near as large as Vespian’s wolf had been, but larger then the wolves I had sent the reserve. I couldn’t see her perfectly in the moonlight, but her mother had been right, Libby’s coat appeared to be pure white and her eyes were a glowing amethyst. She was breathtakingly beautiful. I saw her circle around back towards the edge of the forest and then take off running towards my house, when she was close enough she pushed off the ground with her powerful legs and went spiraling towards my window. There was no way that huge wolf was going to fit through! But a split second before flying through the wolf lost shape and Libby’s athletic body spun through my window and landed crouched on the floor of my room with barely a sound, her wild red curls blanketing her naked body.
“Holy crap Libby! That was amazing!” I muttered in shock and awe. I hadn’t ever seen anything like that.
“I have to say, I’m impressed as well.” Stated Ellie.
Libby flashed me a grin before picking up her clothes and shimmying into them quickly. After buttoning up her pants she walked to my bed side table and took a hair hand from the stand, throwing her mass of curly hair into a huge messing bun at the top of her head.
“I’d love to say ‘Oh that’s nothing!’ but honestly, that stunt would impress most wolfs, much less a wolf raised human.” Libby winked at me as she sat on my bed and leaned back against the pillows with her arms crossed under head.
I moved over to the bed and crawled onto the other side, leaning back against the headboard and grabbing s pillow to hug to my self. “What are you doing his Lib’s? You don’t usually come over in the middle of the night? Everything okay?”
“Yeah. I guess”. Libby muttered pulling a hand from under her head to pick at imaginary lint on her shirt.
“Libby, we’ve been best friends since second grade, you can take to me.” As I pushed my hair out of my face for the third time I decided it was time to do something about the wild mess of brown hair. “Hand me that brush and one of those ties beside you in the night stand.”
“Want me to French braid your hair?” Libby asked as she sat up and grabbed the hair brush and hair tie.
“Yes please.” Libby knew I’d never turn down a French braid, I couldn’t braid my hair to save my life but Libby’s mom made sure both of her girls knew how to braid not only their hair, but each other’s. I turned my back to her and started picking at the threads on the pillow sham I was holding, she started brushing my hair and a few seconds in I heard her sigh.
“I know we’ve been best friends for forever, it’s another reason why you leaving is going to suck so hard.” Libby muttered as she started separating my hair into sections to detangle.
“I remember you mentioning that this afternoon-“
“You mean yesterday afternoon?” Libby butted in.
“Oh yeah, yesterday afternoon. I just don’t understand? I mean, I know he’s an Alpha but does that really mean I have to move to-“ oh crap, I didn’t even know where he was from.
“Tennessee Luna, his pack is in the mountains in Tennessee.” Libby added, helping me out.
“Oh okay, I guess that isn’t to far away.” Who was I kidding, it was to far away to see my best friend whenever I wanted. I brightened up for a moment as I concocted a plan. “Can you come with me?”
“As great as that would be, I want to find my mate. But I can come visit you all the time, and I’m sure you’ll come visit all the time as well. Golden Crescent is good about visiting their Allies to access weaknesses and make sure they have everything they need.” I could feel her hands working at the top of my scalp now as she began braiding my hair.
“What do you mean by making sure they have everything they need?”
“Like supplies. First aid, food, medicine, weapons, even warriors to help train a packs men and women if need be.”
“So they just have all this money to give to ally packs?” I asked surprised.
“Of course.” Chuckled Libby. “They’re one of the richest packs in the world, I know they’re the richest in America. Most powerful as well.”
Oh wow, how was I suppose to process that.
“They’ll be even more powerful with a Lycan Princess as they’re Luna.” As Libby said this I could hear the awe in her voice.
“What do you mean Lycan Princess?” No one had used those words today, I wasn’t really a Princess? Right?
“My dad explained it to me. He said that if your mother had a royal Lycan mark then that meant that your father was a Royal Lycan, and seeing as how no one even knew one had survived, he’d be the natural heir to the thrown. Which makes you, as the Kings daughter, a Princess.” She was way to excited about all of this and if I’m honest, the entire thing made me queazy.
“So if my father dies, does that make me or Orion heir to the throne?” What were we even discussing? This was all insane. Was this really what my life had become? Princess’s and kings and wolves oh my.
“No. Dad said that from the stories he could remember, that when twins or triplets were born they had three options. Rule together peacefully, fight to the death and the surviver ruled, or they could choose amongst them selves who would lead. I don’t see Orion hurting either you or your sister to take the throne, and Celeste wouldn’t dare risk messing up her manicure.” We both dissolved into laughter at the idea of Celeste fighting to death while protecting her nails. Libby put the end of the braid in a ponytail holder and tapped my shoulder to let me know she was done.
I turned around and faced her, both of us sobering up from our fit of laughter. “Libby, I’m worried. There is so much I still don’t understand and I don’t know what I am going to do.”
Libby’s lips turned up into a warm smile and her blue eyes shone with unshed tears. “I know Lulu. I wish I could help, I really do. But I say we go to sleep and we deal with those questions in the morning. What do you say?”
I nodded, returning her smile. “Yes, the morning brings a new day.”
As we both laid down on opposite sides of the bed I closed my easy and heard Ellie say happily “Tomorrow also brings Vespian and Eli.” And I knew I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
Unknown POV:
I watched from my perch in a tree as Luna’s friend Libby threw rocks at Luna’s window before Luna opened it and allowed her friend to shift and jump through the open window. I’d always liked Libby, she’d always made sure no one messed with my Luna to much. Luna would be safe with Libby with her.
Leaning back I rested my back on the rough tree bark and closed my eyes. It was still a few hours until sunlight and I needed some rest to be at top strength. But just as I was falling asleep I heard movement in the forest, like three to four pairs of paws bearing down on this location. I lifted my head and sniffed the air but it wasn’t rogues I smelled, it was Golden Cresent warriors.
