Chapter 5 – The Daring Game

474 Words
The following week, the campus seemed to buzz with more energy than usual. Isabella walked past the student center when she heard laughter and cheers coming from the courtyard. Curiosity piqued, she stepped closer and realized that Leo and Ethan were at it again—this time, with a playful challenge that had gathered a small crowd. Leo held a basketball, grinning mischievously. "Alright, everyone! The next challenge is simple," he announced, his eyes sparkling as they met Isabella’s. "I’ll shoot ten hoops in a row. If I win, I get… well, bragging rights, of course. And maybe Isabella chooses to cheer for me first." Ethan stepped forward, his calm demeanor contrasting Leo’s energy. "Sounds fun," he said, smiling at Isabella. "But what if I try to beat him by racing around the courtyard ten laps instead? Winner takes all." The crowd cheered, clearly enjoying the friendly rivalry. Isabella felt her stomach twist—this was her life now, watching the two boys she liked compete for her attention in increasingly daring ways. Leo went first, shooting hoops with precision and flair. Each basket he made brought him cheers and a triumphant grin aimed at Isabella. She clapped along, her heart pounding, but she noticed Ethan watching quietly, arms crossed, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. Next, it was Ethan’s turn. He sprinted around the courtyard with effortless speed, every movement graceful and controlled. The crowd counted out loud, cheering him on. Isabella’s heart raced as she watched him, impressed by his dedication and determination. When the challenge ended, the results were a tie. The crowd erupted in applause, but Isabella’s mind was spinning. She realized that both of them had given everything to impress her, each in their own unique way. Later that afternoon, the boys approached her together. Leo leaned casually against the railing, his confident grin flashing. "So… who impressed you more?" Ethan stood beside him, calm and collected. "Yes, Isabella… I’m curious too," he added softly. Isabella’s cheeks flushed. She opened her mouth to respond, but the words caught in her throat. How could she choose between Leo’s bold charm and Ethan’s quiet determination? Seeing her hesitation, Leo chuckled. "Don’t worry, we’ll just keep competing until you decide." Ethan smiled faintly, nodding in agreement. "Yes… take your time. But know this—no matter what, I’ll never give up trying." Alone later, Isabella sank onto a bench near the fountain, running her hands through her hair. Her heart ached with confusion and excitement. Two boys, two hearts, and one impossible choice. "Why does love have to be this complicated?" she whispered, the words almost lost in the evening breeze. She didn’t know it yet, but this playful challenge was only the beginning. The rivalry—and her feelings—were about to grow even more intense.
