Chapter 28 – A Sudden Challenge

407 Words
The next week, Starlight University announced a charity relay marathon, and Isabella was asked to help coordinate the participants. She volunteered eagerly, hoping for a distraction from the emotional turmoil of the past days—but as always, fate had a way of complicating things. As she handed out water bottles near the starting line, Leo jogged up, looking energetic and confident. "Ready to watch me win this race?" he teased, flashing his signature grin. Isabella laughed nervously. "Of course… but don’t overdo it," she replied. Before Leo could respond, Ethan appeared, calm and focused, stretching near the track. "Isabella," he said softly, "I’ll be competing too… so keep an eye on both of us." Leo smirked, a spark of playful rivalry in his eyes. "Looks like it’s going to be a real competition then, huh?" The marathon began with cheering crowds and pounding feet. Isabella watched anxiously as both boys ran with everything they had—Leo with his bold, daring speed, Ethan with his calculated, steady pace. Her heart raced with each step, torn between the thrill of watching Leo dominate and the pride she felt seeing Ethan’s focused determination. At the halfway point, both boys were neck-and-neck. Leo glanced over his shoulder, noticing Ethan close behind, and pushed harder. Ethan, in turn, kept his pace steady, his eyes briefly meeting Isabella’s from across the track. Both wanted to impress her—but each in completely different ways. As they approached the finish line, Leo stumbled slightly on a loose patch of gravel. Without hesitation, Ethan slowed just enough to offer a quick hand to steady him. Leo grinned, breathing heavily, "Thanks… I guess you’re not so bad after all." Isabella’s heart leapt. Two boys, both showing their care and determination, both vying for her attention in ways that made her heart ache. She realized once again how impossible her choice had become. When the race ended, the crowd cheered wildly, but Isabella barely noticed. She was too busy watching Leo and Ethan exchange a small, knowing glance—rivalry softened by mutual respect, but love still competing for her heart. Walking home that evening, Isabella whispered softly to herself, "How do I ever choose… when every moment with both of you makes my heart race and ache at the same time?" The marathon had ended, but for Isabella, the race of the heart was far from over.
