Chapter One: The Invitation
The ballroom shimmered with golden light, chandeliers scattering brilliance across polished marble. Music swelled, elegant and soft, but her pulse beat far faster than the orchestra’s rhythm.
She hadn’t wanted to come. Crowds were never her comfort. But then she saw him.
Across the room, in the hush between laughter and clinking glasses, his gaze found hers. Dark, commanding, and unyielding, it held her in place as if the entire party had disappeared, leaving just the two of them. He moved with deliberate precision, every step cutting through the air, every inch of his black tuxedo tailored to perfection.
Her breath hitched when he finally reached her.
“You shouldn’t hide in corners,” his voice was low, a whisper meant for her alone.
“I wasn’t hiding.” She tried to sound steady, but her body betrayed her—shoulders tightening, fingers trembling around her glass.
His eyes trailed down, lingering where her silk straps crossed her bare back. One hand brushed against her arm, feather-light, as though testing how much she’d allow.
“Dance with me,” he said—not a question, but a command disguised in velvet.
Before she could protest, his hand was at her waist, strong and possessive. He drew her into the center of the room, yet it felt as if they’d stepped into another world. His palm pressed against the small of her back, guiding her closer, until there was almost no space between them.
The music faded behind the thunder of her heartbeat. She felt the scrape of his jaw near her temple, the warmth of his breath against her ear.
“You feel it too,” he murmured. “Don’t you?”
Her body leaned before her mind could decide. A surrender, small but undeniable. His grip tightened at her hip, the silk of her dress slipping under his fingers, and she knew—tonight was the beginning of something dangerous, something intoxicating, something she wouldn’t be able to resist.
