Chapter 1: Sidney Frostlin
I stood in front of Miami International Airport. "I can't believe I'm going there... after all that drama," Sidney muttered under her breath, hugging her backpack tighter. The humid air smelled faintly of jet fuel and pretzels from a nearby snack stand, but she barely noticed.
(flashback)
"Mom? Dad? What's wrong with Mom? Why isn't she moving?"
Dad just stood there, holding Mom tightly on the hospital bed. Tears streamed down little Sydney's cheeks as the casket rolled away. Mrs. Frontline had battled an illness and, sadly, didn't survive it. The echo of the hospital machines, the whispered condolences, the heaviness in the room—all of it haunted her even now.
A year later, Mr. Frontline and Sydney flew to Korea, where he planned to start a business with his partner, Grace. Sydney's dark skin and curly hair made her stand out in her new school—and not in a good way. The teasing and whispers quickly turned into bullying, the words slicing deeper than she could explain.
Remembering those moments sent chills down her spine. She adjusted her backpack straps and took a deep breath. “This time,” she whispered to herself, “I’ll make it different. I won’t let anyone define me.” The airport buzzed with travelers rushing past, but Sydney felt a quiet determination rising inside her—a spark of hope amid the memories of pain.
