Aurora’s POV
I couldn’t sleep.
There was a part of me that held on to the thought that Reid was drugged and Sarah wanted to push my buttons, while the other part of me hated me for ignoring the fact that I closed my eyes and let him call me crazy whenever I asked.
I decided to text the unknown number who I knew was Sarah, “My husband would never cheat on me! Get over yourself you slut!” And waited.
All I wanted to do was to see!
I had my suspicions when he started hiding his phone, and those red lipstick marks at the crook of his shirt…
God, I hated myself for being such a fool.
Five minutes ticked by, thirty, then an hour and finally, an agonizing five hours passed before Sarah responded.
Her text was curt, taunting: “Come to his office now!” I could almost see her smug face, mocking me, knowing I'd rush to the office. And I did.
“Mrs. Miller” I introduced myself at the reception. Ignoring the receptionist's weary eyes, I followed her directions to his office.
As I got to his floor, I was surprised to find out that none of Colton's workers were around, almost as though Sarah had set up the perfect scene for me.
I got to the door of his office, and Sarah’s whine stopped me at the barely closed door.
“She already asked for a divorce baby!”
“Why do you keep pressuring me to leave her?” Reid argued, causing me to scoff.
Reid continued, “You already have me so why bother?”.
Sarah continued to whine, “What do you even need her for? She's barren, useless, and has nothing to offer. I mean, you don't even touch her!" and I waited for my beloved husband's answer.
“I already told you our marriage has benefited my business in ways I can't explain… contracts I'm certain my company shouldn't be able to acquire are what we acquire!”
All these years and all he saw me as was just a business asset to him?
Sarah persisted, her voice dripping with malice. “So, what's your plan baby? Isn't she suspicious? I mean you don’t even sleep at home and have my perfume all over you”.
“She's naive and easy to deceive, I mean she didn’t even see the hickey on my neck”.
What a joke!
I did but ignored it for the sake of my sanity, what I wanted to see was this to be certain that those times he had called some crazy… I wasn’t!
What he also didn’t know was that I was going to ruin him just like I had made him.
“There’s no way I'm letting go now, not when I’m this close to getting Parralax’s Inc. contract.”
Sarah's squeal of excitement was the final nail in the coffin.
“When I wrap up that contract, leave her hanging, and we get married in the Maldives… I can't wait to scream to everyone that you're my wife!”.
This son of a b***h!.
I burst into the room, slamming the divorce papers on the table. “You bastard!” Reid and Sarah sprang apart, caught off guard.
Sarah's smirk made my blood boil, she knew I was going to come, and I had already heard enough…
“Reid, You bastard!” I repeated, my voice shaking with rage.
Reid's face twisted in anger as he took a step towards me. “What are you doing here, Aurora?” he growled. But I stood my ground, my voice rising.
“What do you mean, what am I doing here? I just caught you kissing! Let's not forget the disgusting things you've said.”
“How could I have been so blind to your gaslighting all these years!?”
Sarah tried to intervene, her voice dripping with insincerity. “I'm so sorry you walked into this Aurora! It's not what you think!” But I wasn't having it. I felt a surge of anger, tempted to slap the smug smile off her face.
Reid tried to pacify me, his voice calm and condescending.
“Aurora, let's talk about this at home, don’t make a scene here.” But I cut him off, my words spilling out in a rush.
“I stayed! I chose to be the foolish and selfless wife because I couldn't open my eyes to see you weren't that man who stopped me from jumping off that bridge! The man who walked the altar with me!”
“Aurora…” Reid's expression turned cold, and he sneered at me.
“How long has this been going on?” I demanded.
“The day you had your first miscarriage, he was inside me while his mom asked him to come over.” Sarah answered immediately, causing me to wince.
The thought that I had suspected all this while but convinced myself otherwise was daunting.
Reid finally spoke up, his words cutting deep. “Do you really blame me? I mean look at you, Aurora.” I felt a sting from his words, but I refused to back down.
“What happened to 'I didn't know that was how you felt'?” I spat, my anger boiling.
“Oh, cut that crap! You've always been stupid, and you believing you ever stood a chance with Sarah was your first mistake!” Reid's face twisted in contempt.
“I never loved you, but damn, you do make a good f**k! You were also good at your business proposals, and the fact that you couldn't even carry a child was disappointing, especially since Sarah is carrying my child.”
Sarah was carrying his child?
It took every last shred of resolve I possessed not to crumble in front of him.
“Congratulations Mr. Reid, Just sign the papers!” Reid's voice lacked any form of emotion when he ordered, “Go home, we'll talk about this later.”
“You don't need me for anything, and I refuse to be your pawn. Just sign the papers, Reid!”.
Reid sneered. “Once I sign those papers, you'll be left with nothing!” He spat the words at me.
“Isn't that the point of a divorce?” I asked, my voice laced with bitterness.
“I don't want your property, and I won't be taking as much as a cent from your precious house!”
Sarah pulled Reid in, whispering something in his ear while sending me glares and with a proud sneer, Reid signed the papers before flinging it at me.
I picked up the paper, my hands trembling as I clutched it to my chest. Without looking back, I turned and walked away.
As I walked out the door, I heard Sarah say, “She won’t survive one day without you baby.”.
The sound of their laughter and kisses followed me out the door. He'd made his choice, and that was the worst mistake he'd ever made.
Four wasted years on a man still madly in love with his ex. A man who didn't mind stringing me along to get benefits he didn't even know I had to fight for.
Tears blurred my vision as I stumbled out of the building, I was breaking down and I didn’t want to, not here.
I barged into someone, but I didn't stop to apologize.
“Nova?” a familiar voice called out, but I kept moving. I couldn't stop.
How could I have been so stupid to let this slide?
Damn!
November Aurora Adams, the ever calculative only granddaughter of the Adams family has been so stupid!
“Nova.” The voice called out again, and just as I heard the loud honk of a car screeching to a halt, I felt a wave of fear wash over me as I shut my eyes, bracing for impact. But it never came.
Instead, I felt strong arms wrap around me, pulling me into a warm, familiar embrace. The musky scent of mint enveloped me, transporting me back to a different time and place.
“What the f**k was that, November Aurora Adams?” a low, husky voice growled, shaking me out of my trance.
I opened my eyes to find myself staring up at a ruggedly handsome face, a face I thought I'd never see again.
“Colton?” I whispered, my voice trembling with shock and confusion.
