Episode One
Aurora’s POV
The tears I had desperately tried to keep in place, slipped.
“Tears? Tears will do you no good Aurora, I want a grandchild!”, my mother in law yelled, glaring at me in disgust.
“I can’t even stand you!”, she stormed out, deliberately nudging me and sending me falling to my knees. Tears trailed down my face and I kept the sob in.
It had only been a month since my last miscarriage and to think I’ve had two miscarriages in a period of less than nine months, and the house had been a never-ending nightmare.
Reid had accused me of deliberately causing the miscarriage, and Leslie had taken it upon herself to constantly check on me, making sure I was doing my “wifely duties.” I felt trapped and alone.
I knew I could always go back home, but I was determined to make this marriage work.
My marriage had cost me my name and family, I had to show them that I had made the right choice and didn’t make a mistake by marrying Reid.
For hours, I sat in silence, lost in thought, until Reid's quiet entrance pulled me out of my trance. If he noticed the storm brewing inside me, he said nothing, instead headed straight for the bathroom to take a bath.
We desperately needed to talk. I needed reassurance that the man who had swept me off my feet four years ago, the man who had saved me, was still the same man I was married to.
I finally broke the obvious silence. “Your mom just left,” I said, my voice neutral.
Reid didn't even bother to spare me a glance. “What did she want?” he asked, his tone sounding so cold.
I hesitated for a moment before responding, “A child.” My words hung in the air, and I couldn't help but feel a pang of discomfort.
Reid’s response was unexpected, and he said, “Then she came for you.” I wasn't sure if he was joking or if he had just thrown me off with his blunt comment. His expression gave nothing away, leaving me wondering what he meant.
I watched in silence as he walked, avoiding the sight of my body but as Reid started packing his bag, I broke the silence once again, “Where are you going?” His response was detached and unapologetic: “I won't be staying home tonight.” It was a statement I had grown all too familiar with.
I reminded him, trying to keep the disappointment out of my voice, “It’s been long since we even spoke, a night out wouldn't be a bad idea.”
It sounded suggestive, and he paused for a moment before shrugging it off with a snort, “It’s not like we have anything to celebrate, I have a more important meeting to attend tomorrow and the award event will be starting next week, you know what it means for my company to get nominated with the likes of Parallax inc.”.
“Who knows, the owner might finally make an appearance, and we can seal the deal.”
“I don’t mind going with you seeing as you haven’t been home in a while, I’d love to go… it will be like a vacation week”
Not giving me any room, he responded sharply, “I am already going with Sarah, you have been depressed and a sore sight, how would you hide those fat folds?”
I felt a surge of anger and hurt. “You can’t seriously be bringing this up, my fat folds and depression was because I lost a child… your child!”
Reid's expression turned cold. “That was a month ago. You stink of depression, and I don't recognize you anymore!” he yelled back.
I shot back, my voice trembling with emotion. “Is that why you're taking your best friend? Is that why you couldn't even pick me up from the hospital? Or stay with me while I mourn our child!”
Reid's response was cruel. “Don't start. You caused it. You lost that child due to your carelessness, so don't put it on me!”
“That's why you choose her to mourn with? You chose to always rub it in my face that you missed your ex, now best friend, and wished you had never married me?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
It was all weighing me down, his selfish mother's demand for a child, his baring hatred for me for losing our child… This was the last straw!
I had been contemplating my decision from the money Sarah walked back into his life, but I was trying desperately to fold onto something I know was lost.
Reid's response was a cold, hard truth. “Yes.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
“Let's get a divorce?” I said, my voice trembling with emotion. Another silence followed, and for a moment, I thought Reid hadn't heard me. But then he spoke up.
“What?!”
“Let’s not deceive ourselves anymore by pretending we care, let’s get a divorce!”
“What's going on?” he asked, his brow furrowed confused. The switch was alarming.
I steeled myself, and continued. “It’s either you try to fix this marriage, or we're done. I'm not going to keep pretending that everything is fine when it's not.”
Reid's eyes widened in shock, and he held my gaze, as if searching for answers. "Where is all this coming from?” he asked, his voice calm and laced with confusion.
I took a deep breath, the words spilling out of me like a dam breaking. “It's coming from a wife who sacrificed everything to be a housewife, only to be ignored and neglected. A wife who's been berated for making your best friend cry, and blamed for losing our unborn child not once, but twice in nine months.”
My voice cracked as I continued. “A wife whose mother-in-law constantly pesters her for a grandchild, without caring about her well-being. A wife who's been made to feel repulsive by her husband, who's repelled by her 'fat folds'.”
I felt the tears pricking at the corners of my eyes, but I refused to back down. “I'm a wife at her wit's end, Reid. I deserve better.”
As I finished speaking, I tried to pull away, but Reid caught me, pulling me into his arms.
“I am sorry” he began as soon as I quieted down, “I didn’t know this was how you felt, after the miscarriage, you had shut me out, and I didn’t know how to reach you!”
“I poured my office frustration on you, it just hasn’t been looking up for me these days” he cooed.
“Why did you ever think divorce was the best way to go about things? Do you not love me anymore, Aurora”, I fought between my resolve and the feeling that he was gaslighting me using my feelings?
I left his arms, “I should be asking you that, Reid.”
Forcefully he lifted my chin to meet his and unexpectedly he placed a kiss on my parted lips, sending shivers down my spine.
You make me crazy, Aurora," he whispered, his breath hot against my skin. “Of course, you matter to me. I didn't know how to deal with everything, and I didn't realize I was prioritizing Sarah. You know she means nothing to me.”
Lies!
I know all he was spewing lies!
All I needed was to catch him.
Reid's eyes locked onto mine, “I'm so sorry, baby. How can I make up for how I've acted? I'm sorry I won't be home today, but I promise to make it up to you after the award event, after that, everything will be all about you.”
“Give me one week, baby, I’ll make it alright.”
As he spoke, he pulled me in for another kiss, but I took two steps back.
“When you get back, we talk!”, with that I walked back to bed and closed my eyes, ignoring his soft calls.
When I woke up, he was gone.
My phone suddenly pinged, its shrill tone piercing the silence in the room. I hesitated for a moment before reaching for it, my heart sinking as I saw the message.
I was right all along then.
The message was from an unknown number, but the video attached was unmistakable. Reid lay sprawled across Sarah's naked breasts, his head cradled in the crook of her neck as she gently stroked his hair.
I bursted into laughter, ignoring the fact that I sounded like a maniac and I read the message.
“Dearest Mrs. Millers. I never knew you were generous enough to let your husband continue to share a bed with his best friend.”
