Chapter 4

In the private study of the Lord of Eagle’s Castle, Kain and his two subordinates were deep in discussion about the situation in Wenlai Fortress. The atmosphere had reached a low point. Catherine slammed her hand on the table, glaring at the map of Wenlai Fortress. "My lord, our soldiers are not without the ability to fight. Especially my deputy, Reed. He's on the brink of becoming a trainee swordsman, and I believe he’ll advance in a few days." Kain nodded, indicating for Catherine to continue. "Furthermore, while we may be outmatched in extraordinary power, we can compensate with numbers and coordination. If we wait for him to reveal a flaw, we can certainly injure that Horst." This impractical plan made the experienced Marcus shake his head. He spoke up to refute Catherine’s proposal, "Catherine, you should know that a second-tier knight with the ability to summon a spirit armor cannot be harmed, no matter how hard we try." Spirit armor, as Catherine knew, was an exclusive ability of second-tier knights. It worked by summoning spiritual energy to envelop the knight, making them nearly invulnerable. Even a mage's spells could be deflected. Undeterred, Catherine responded, "Yes, as you said, Marcus, he can summon spirit armor, but it’s not permanent. If we keep attacking, we can deplete his energy and break through his armor, making it our turn to strike back." Just when Catherine thought her plan would be acknowledged, Marcus remained opposed. "I understand your method well, Catherine. I’ve seen it on the battlefield. But it requires more than five extraordinary individuals. With just the three of us, it’s suicide." Catherine frowned, not agreeing with this assessment. At this moment, Kain intervened to stop their argument. "Enough, Marcus, Catherine. Both of your plans have merit, and I will consider them." "In the coming days, I need you to do the following: First, intensify the training of our soldiers and aim to cultivate another trainee extraordinary individual." "Second, take some time each morning to spar with me and improve our coordination." "Third, send out scouts to observe the reaction of Wenlai Fortress to the disappearance of the assassin and my continued safety." "Understood, Lord Kain." The two stopped arguing, nodded in agreement, and left to carry out his orders. After they left, Kain began his preparations. Not only did he need to enhance his own strength, but he also needed to investigate the anomalies that had appeared in his body over the past few days. Picking up the letter opener on the table, Kain looked at his chest, recalling the scene of pulling out an arrow a few days ago and the strange phenomena his body exhibited last night. Kain was fairly certain that his body possessed incredible healing powers. To test his theory, Kain cut his arm with the letter opener. Instead of ordinary blood, golden-red blood flowed out, dripping onto the floor. A peculiar itching sensation emanated from the wound as the flesh rapidly knitted back together. In no time, the cut on his arm vanished. "Just as I thought..." The speed of his wound healing excited Kain, as it would give him a significant advantage in combat. However, internal injuries might still require some time to heal, even for him. Placing the letter opener back on the table, Kain examined the golden-red blood that had dripped onto the floor. In the sunlight, the blood looked exceptionally striking, as if hiding some incredible energy beneath its surface. If he considered it from the perspective of his previous life’s medical knowledge, golden blood suggested a condition like iron deficiency. Kain shook his head; he was in excellent health, clearly not suffering from that condition. But in the context of this world, he searched through his predecessor’s memories for an explanation. He soon recalled reading about golden blood in a book called "Lester’s Travels," which he had found in the family library during his childhood. The book not only described the epic adventures of the elf Lester but also mentioned dragon blood. Dragons were incredibly mysterious beings on this continent, appearing sporadically and causing chaos whenever they did. According to Lester, dragon blood was golden and was considered a rare medicinal ingredient. A potion made from dragon blood could push any creature beyond its species' limits to unimaginable heights. Looking at the golden-red blood on the floor, Kain dismissed the idea that it was dragon blood. Not only was there a color discrepancy, but his strength was still within the first tier, without any significant improvement. However, Lester also wrote that any being with golden blood possessed a powerful bloodline. "A powerful bloodline, huh?" Kain touched the previous wound. He had noticed the peculiarity of his blood a few days ago and now understood it was a sign of a strong bloodline. Had he transformed from an ordinary human into some kind of sub-human? Regardless, the healing ability alone was a significant advantage. Reflecting on the previous night's events, Kain realized that the white fur, elongated canines, and sharp claws resembled a werewolf from the fantasy films of his past life. So, he had become a werewolf on the night of the assassination attempt. Apart from the appearance changes, Kain found no downside to becoming a werewolf. If not for the boost in strength from the werewolf bloodline, he would have been killed by that mid-tier assassin long before Marcus and Catherine arrived. In his memory, this continent seemed devoid of werewolves, with no legends or records about them. However, vampires, equally famous, had appeared in various records over the centuries. Kain felt both excited and fearful about the werewolf bloodline. The excitement stemmed from the significant boost in strength and the untapped potential. The fear arose from the noticeable changes a werewolf undergoes, which could make him a target if discovered. Thus, until he reached the fifth tier, Kain decided to hide his werewolf identity, minimize transformations, and research the source of his new powers.
