Chapter 1
The bright moon hung high in the night sky, illuminating a lavishly decorated room.
Through the wide-open windows, a cold wind blew in, causing the oil lamp on the table to flicker.
Lying beside an overturned chair was a young nobleman dressed in splendid attire.
At this moment, his delicate face appeared pale and colorless, his eyes were tightly shut, and his lips had turned purple.
An arrow had brazenly pierced his chest, aimed directly at his heart.
"Cough, cough…"
Suddenly, the young man coughed violently and woke up. He opened his eyes and looked around in confusion, realizing that he was no longer in a familiar environment.
"Where is this?"
"Wasn't I at the detective agency? Ouch…"
A flood of memories surged into his mind. Kane Gerard was the name of this body.
As a newly inherited baron, he could have had a glorious future, but on this night, a sudden assassination ended his life.
At that moment, Su Ming from Blue Star inherited his body.
It was unfortunate. Su Ming had only taken a nap at his detective agency, but when he woke up, he found himself in another world.
Struggling to stand up, he felt a sharp pain in his chest and remembered the arrow still lodged in his body.
"D*mn it, I forgot about this."
Looking at the arrow embedded in his chest, Su Ming didn't know what to do, but the increasing pain warned him that he had to either pull out the arrow or endure the agony.
After hesitating for a moment, Su Ming took a deep breath, endured the piercing pain, grabbed the arrow's shaft, and pulled it out in one swift motion.
Immediately, golden-red blood spurted out along with the arrow, and Su Ming collapsed to the ground.
An indescribable pain surged through his body, as if the moment he pulled out the arrow, his strength flowed out with the blood.
Clutching his bleeding chest, Su Ming slowly went from kneeling to lying down, eventually losing the strength to support himself and collapsing completely, his vision becoming increasingly blurry.
However, his will to survive kept reminding him not to fall asleep.
Perhaps moved by his determination, under his strong will, his drooping eyelids gradually opened, and a strange comfort spread from his heart to his entire body.
No longer feeling the pain, Su Ming relaxed into this comfort and gradually fell asleep.
The next morning.
When the bright sunlight shone into the room, a knock sounded at the door.
"Knock, knock, knock."
"Baron Kane."
Maintaining the same position from last night, Su Ming—no, Kane—opened his eyes once again.
Struggling to get up from the floor, he wiped his damp cheeks and realized that his entire body was covered in blood.
But what puzzled Kane was that his blood contained traces of gold, and the blood that should have dried or clotted by now was still flowing like water, continuously dripping from his body.
Suddenly, as if realizing something, Kane tore open his tattered shirt.
Looking at his chest, he saw a gruesome scar where the arrow had been. The wound had already healed.
Something must have changed in his body last night.
Kane knew that even with his previous strength as a first-rank novice, he couldn't have such abilities.
Staring at the pool of blood on the floor, Kane shook his head mockingly. Indeed, someone who could lose this much blood and still be fine was no ordinary person.
At this moment, the voice from outside sounded again.
"Baron Kane?"
Recognizing the familiar voice, Kane knew it was his personal servant, Enqin.
As someone who had grown up with him, Enqin was someone he deeply trusted.
Uncertain whether the assassin was from outside or within the castle, Enqin was the only person Kane trusted completely.
Immediately, Kane opened the door and pulled Enqin inside.
"Master Kane, what happened to you?" Enqin asked anxiously, seeing Kane covered in blood.
Kane patted Enqin's shoulder, signaling him to calm down, and said, "Enqin, I'm fine. There's no need to ask too many questions. Just clean this place up and leave the arrow."
Seeing Kane unwilling to elaborate, Enqin suppressed his curiosity and began cleaning up.
Meanwhile, Kane went to the bathroom alone to wash up.
After a thorough wash and a change of clothes, Kane left his room and, led by another maid, went to the dining hall.
Once seated, the waiting servants began serving breakfast, and the butler, Jess, entered.
In the original owner's memory, this butler had been assisting the family since the previous baron's time, making him very experienced.
"Master Kane, the warm red wine from Piersburg is ready. Shall I serve it now?"
"Serve it, Jess."
"As you wish, Master Kane."
Jess took the wine from a servant and slowly poured it into Kane's glass.
During this time, Kane observed everyone's expressions, but neither Jess nor anyone else seemed to know about the assassination attempt. Could the assassin be from outside the castle?
After breakfast, Kane followed the original owner's routine and went to the castle's outdoor training ground for his daily morning exercise.
Wielding his longsword, Kane absentmindedly struck at the training dummy.
While maintaining the original owner's routine, Kane kept pondering who might have attempted to assassinate him at such a critical time.
Was it Jess? Clearly not. As the castle's butler, he had no reason to assassinate him.
Could it be Marcus? Kane envisioned a strong and steady figure but shook his head. As his family's knight, Marcus wouldn't make such an unwise decision.
It couldn't be Katherine either. Like Marcus, she was an extraordinary being nurtured by the family. If he fell, they would also be greatly affected.
Putting down his sword, Kane took the towel handed by a servant and wiped the sweat from his forehead, continuing to think. Excluding everyone in the castle, the assassin could only be from outside.
The morning training quickly ended, and Kane returned to his study.
By now, Enqin had cleaned the study, standing aside and handing the murder weapon, the arrow, to Kane.
Taking the arrow, Kane instructed, "Enqin, remember not to speak of what happened in this room."
Enqin nodded. "Yes, I understand, Master Kane." He then discreetly exited the study.
After Enqin closed the door, Kane examined the arrow closely. The arrow had a protruding part at the tail end, with the fletching above it—this was a typical crossbow arrow structure.
Also, the crossbow arrow was a common, generic type, indicating that the assassin didn't want their identity to be discovered.
Putting down the arrow, Kane went to the window. Assuming his previous deduction was correct, the assassin likely entered the room from outside.
The study window was very clean, thanks to daily cleaning by the servants, but Kane noticed some anomalies below the window.
Looking down, the mighty stone wall supporting the entire castle revealed a few bricks with missing edges, located just below the window on either side.
This tiny detail wouldn't be noticed by the average person but stood out to Kane due to his former profession.
As he had suspected, the assassin entered from outside.
To avoid multiple patrols and climb the wall easily, the assassin must have been an extraordinary being, possibly of a higher rank than Kane himself.
This realization gave Kane a headache. Extraordinary beings possessed unique powers far beyond ordinary soldiers.
Moreover, with the assassin in the shadows and Kane in the light, if the assassin discovered he was still alive, they would surely return for another attempt.
Kane needed to devise a plan before the assassin struck again.
