Chapter 12

1071 Words
The war against the goblin tribe inflicted significant damage on the soldiers of Regit. Under the organization of Marcus and Catherine, all lightly injured soldiers took on the role of medics. They received herbs and bandages from the two superhumans and began treating the wounded with severed limbs. Feeling compassion for the injured, Knight Host dispatched all his subordinates to assist the soldiers of Regit in tending to the wounded. Supported by Host, Kane sat down on a relatively clean patch of ground to rest alone. At this moment, Catherine, who had just finished tallying the casualties, approached him. Seeing Kane’s exhausted state, she asked worriedly, “My lord, are you alright?” Earlier, she had witnessed Kane endure the attack firsthand. After such a violent explosion, Catherine doubted that Kane could be unscathed. Kane weakly waved his hands, trying to show he was fine. "I'm okay, Catherine." To Catherine, it seemed like he was merely comforting himself. Suppressing her heavy emotions, Catherine reported the casualties of the battle. “My lord, we initially led 42 armed infantrymen, 3 scouts, and 24 cavalrymen, totaling 69 men. After the battle with the goblin tribe, we lost over 30 men, including 21 armed soldiers, 9 cavalrymen, and one apprentice superhuman.” Such a significant loss of personnel would greatly weaken the security and defense of Regit. Kane sighed and instructed Catherine, "All fallen soldiers’ families should receive one to two Delis coins as compensation." In the Kingdom of Dylan, three types of currency were commonly circulated: Marion copper coins, Kelos silver coins, and Deli gold coins. The names of these currencies honored historical figures who had made significant contributions to the kingdom. Marion was the greatest mage in the kingdom's history, responsible for creating the mage profession. Kelos was the second king of Dylan, known for numerous reforms, including policies allowing commoners to become superhumans and the establishment of academies open to commoners. He led humanity in conquering half of the orc territories, earning widespread admiration from the populace. Deli, the founder of the Kingdom of Dylan and the first human to reach the fifth-tier epic level as a knight, shattered the perception of humans as a weak race and established the kingdom. For convenience, people often referred to the currencies as Marion coins, Kelos coins, and Deli coins. "Yes, my lord," Catherine nodded in understanding. Kane continued, "Did you mention that Reid also perished?" "Yes, my lord, he was killed by that lowly goblin superhuman," Catherine replied, her voice filled with sorrow. "Sigh... Another future superhuman lost," Kane lamented, gazing up at the sky. The losses from this battle were immense, not only in terms of compensation for the fallen soldiers but also in terms of manpower and future superhumans. It would take a long time for Regit to recover. After reporting the situation, Catherine rejoined the rescue efforts. As dusk approached, the sunset bathed the battlefield in a different hue, adding a touch of color to the somber atmosphere. After burying all the fallen soldiers, Kane and his group, along with Host's squad, left the forest. In Meco Village, villagers who had worked all day in the wheat fields returned home, children ran back to their houses under their mothers' urging, and the elderly continued to sit under trees, enjoying the sunset. In this peaceful atmosphere, Kane's troops entered the village. The villagers were stunned by the sight of the battle-worn soldiers, wondering what kind of enemy could have inflicted such damage on the once-proud force. Moreover, some villagers noticed a relatively unscathed squad of knights accompanying Kane's group. The leader of the knights, riding a fine horse, was conversing with Lord Kane. “Who is that, my lord?” a villager asked. “That’s Lord Host, Kane’s uncle. I didn’t expect him to return,” answered an elderly villager who had witnessed three generations of lords in Regit. Kane and his group quickly passed through Meco Village, heading towards the castle. The villagers, having just paid their respects, lost their appetite for dinner and began speculating about what had happened in the forest. “Grandpa Dis, you’re the wisest in our village. What kind of monster did Lord Kane encounter to suffer such injuries?” a young villager asked. “Hmm, it might have been a bear goblin. I encountered such a creature in my youth. They possess immense strength, enough to defeat a hundred soldiers,” the old man replied, puffing on his pipe as he gazed at the sunset. The young villager, his curiosity piqued, asked, “How did you escape, Grandpa?” The old man showed a long scar on his arm. “With my wits, I tricked the creature and managed to escape. This scar is a reminder of that encounter.” The young ones looked at the old man in awe, but their admiration was short-lived as a companion revealed, “Don’t believe him, young Airit. That scar is from a farming accident, not a bear goblin.” The old man, his lie exposed, glared at his companion. “You’ll regret this, Atem.” The discussion turned into a playful exchange of boasting between the elderly and the young villagers, until the village elder intervened to end the commotion. Meanwhile, back with Kane’s group. As they returned to the castle, the steward Ghis, along with a group of servants, was already waiting at the gate to welcome them. The injured were quickly transferred to the castle’s medical room. Faced with the sudden influx of wounded, physician Lim and his two assistants were overwhelmed and had to enlist the help of the castle servants. Elsewhere, Ghis personally arranged for Host to rest in a bedroom. Although Catherine and Marcus participated in the battle, they had been mainly suppressed by the enemy's aura and had not sustained significant injuries. As for Lord Kane, he had to stay in the medical room. Despite his earlier recovery, Kane's act of feigning weakness had deceived everyone. Once inside the medical room, he signaled to Lim, who quickly understood and dismissed everyone before helping Kane into a private room. “Lord Kane, are you alright?” Lim asked, puzzled. “I'm fine, Lim. Keep this a secret,” Kane replied. “Yes, my lord,” Lim acknowledged, suppressing his curiosity as he left the room. To avoid arousing Host's suspicion, Kane had to remain in the medical room for a while.
