CHAPTER 1
(Way BEFORE Crystal and Ethan’s marriage)
Ethan’s POV
I was in my office and in pissed off mood. Chris Jones was getting on my nerves, and I was one step away from punching him in the face. He was not letting this marriage happen and everyday he’d come up with some ridiculous excuse to postpone the talk. But I had had enough of it and I decided to confront him. I was more angry that why of all people I had to marry his sister. More importantly, why she was the same girl I saw in the restaurant, and now I was doomed. I actually wanted to marry that girl. And everything was slipping out of my control. I liked order in my life and now it was in chaos.
I threw my pen holder on the wall to let some of my anger out. Smashing the thing was the only way I knew to let my anger out and years long practice made this habit of mine.
Wearing my suit, I left my office. When I entered Chris’s office building, there was only the guard and the receptionist since it was after working hours. The guard greeted me and I just nodded my head, but the receptionist gave me suggestive look and I ignored her blankly. I was tired of such advances and sometimes I felt that having looks was a disadvantage as such clingy girls would always follow me. But then again, I knew how to be blunt and the insults I’d throw helped me many times.
Exiting the elevator, I took long and fast strides to his office and opened the door with force.
“Urgh! It’s you!” he was annoyed, and should be because I was also annoyed with him.
“What the hell is your problem? Why are you stopping this marriage?” I yelled at him in anger.
“That is what brothers do! I want to protect my sister. By the way, she doesn’t want to marry you,” he told me in very calm voice and this flared my anger.
“Why? What has she seen in me which made her to refuse?” I glared at this man whom I considered my good friend.
“I don’t know and she doesn’t talk much. She just said she doesn’t want to marry and here I’m honoring her wish,” he shrugged and I gave him a pissed off look.
“But according to the will, she has to marry me!”
“That is written in your grandfather’s will. Mine wrote nothing like that,” he scoffed. And he was right. There wasn’t any written agreement and I knew he had every right to refuse.
“But your grandparents promised and you should honor their wish as well,” this was my only defense.
“We are ready to honor it, but that doesn’t mean we’d throw our baby in a deep sea.”
“What?!” I was confused because he would blurt nonsense and never gave me any direct answer. “This is your last chance Chris! Give me one solid reason to understand your nonsense or you’ll get a hard punch on your face,” I paced his office, retraining myself from acting on my punching desire.
“I also know how to punch, dude!” he emphasized ‘dude’. But he sighed and signaled me to sit down.
“Ethan Reynolds, you must understand that my sister is like a crystal. Crystal is like a crystal. Are you understanding what I’m saying?”
“What the hell are you talking about?!” I squinted my eyes at him.
“This! You’d be saying this sentence number of times in a day if you married my sister. Because she is beyond your understanding. Even I don’t understand her sometimes,” he made a face and I mentally strangled him.
“What is so difficult about her?” I was seriously regretting pursuing this marriage talk now.
“There is nothing difficult about her. She is very simple, but for you she’ll be very difficult. Because you both are polar opposite. She is shy and you have big insulting mouth. Look man, she has just turned twenty two, and honestly I believe this is not the age to get married and get into responsibilities. And my baby is not ready to become a wife just yet. She is not like many people. She takes time to adjust in new surrounding and what would you do if she didn’t behave like a wife?” he challenged.
“This is nonsense,” I scoffed.
“Yes, for you, it is nonsense. But for Crystal, it is her life. She is very sensitive, Ethan. She is soft and vulnerable, and she can’t change herself. If she gets married, she’ll be thrust into the world of limelight which she hates. Obviously, you’d expect her to attend parties and other events and trust me this drains her energy. You know, I was her prom date and I had to drag her to her prom and she made me leave her prom after ten minutes. What would you do if she refused to accompany you to any event or any client dinner. Would you force her to attend it? Would you insult her and say that she needs to grow up and act like a wife without caring about her wishes? If you did, I would beat you to death. Secondly, she would be hurt and shut you out. And trust me, it will take forever to make her trust you.”
“This sounds complicated, not simple! And honestly, completely childish!”
“No. It is simple. You just have to understand her. Yes, she is a child at heart because it is her nature. She can’t change her personality. Just like you can’t change your anger. Tell me! You are twenty seven and an adult. Do you behave like an adult all the time? Do you talk to everybody with respect and politeness like we adults are supposed to do? Do you control your anger no matter how bad the situation is? I think no. So why should she not behave like a child once in a while?
“If being adult means act like a responsible and good citizen, I think there would not have been any crime in the world. Maturity doesn’t come with the age. A moron at younger age becomes a bigger moron as he grows up. And the same goes with marriage. Marriage doesn’t mean that a girl flips a switch on and activates a wife mode. It takes time to adjust. Everyone adjusts according to their pace. And this is what I’m afraid of that you’d not give her time,” he lectured me and for the first time he made some sense. And I was seriously trying to get out of this lecture because he was being a sensible, sincere and mature person which he was not! He liked causing trouble and now he was lecturing like a saint!
I hated to admit that he wasn’t wrong!
“Look Ethan, even I don’t like arguing like this but wouldn’t you fight for your loved ones? And I love my baby sis. She is very precious and she is fragile and I’m afraid she would get hurt very easily if I believe in the rumors about you being arrogant and short-tempered. She is no match to your personality. She would keep the hurt inside and won’t tell anyone. Crystal was bullied in school for nearly a year and she didn’t tell anybody because her bloody friends told her to grow up and fight her battles. This is how she fought, by not telling this to anyone because she became insecure as those people said that she was a baby who let her big brother fight her battles. This bullying went too far, and we had no idea until it reached its peak. She was just fifteen years old.”
“Just tell me what do you want?” I was seriously tired of this lecture although it pricked me a little that she had to go through that experience alone. But I was expert at keeping my emotions in check, and kept my poker face on.
“I’ll tell you, but our conversation is not over yet,” he shrugged.
I groaned because he was f*****g wasting my time but I had to endure this shitty talk. And I was pissed at my grandparents for choosing this much complicated girl. What was so special in this girl?!
“Then finish this conversation,” I glared at him.
“And about maturity, Crystal is mature, Ethan. You just have to observe her mature nature. She will not pick any fight with you. She will not drag any matter unnecessarily. She will not expect anything from you. She will not demand anything. But yes, if you went beyond her tolerance level, she’d get even with you. And I have no idea how will do that, just expect all the childish tantrums because last time when she did this she was four and half and that was one hell of a week,” he shuddered and I just blinked at him as I was so confused.
What the hell my grandparents have gotten me into?! I’ve to marry this weird girl!
“One last question,” he spoke and I mentally choked him.
Finish this f*****g meeting already!
“What would you do if you both are in a restaurant and you ordered a new dish to try, and she made a funny face as if she is thinking ‘what the s**t are you eating’ and then you actually feel like the dish was really shitty?” he crossed his arms on his chest.
“What the hell are you talking?” I seriously gave up. This man can actually mental torture you.
“Chris I just want to kill now!” I turned to the voice and his other sister, Ashlyn Jones, stood at the door. “It has been half an hour and you’re dragging the main point.”
“Were you eavesdropping?” he asked.
“Yes, and now my heels are sore because standing in these fancy heels is not easy!” and she sat on the sofa. “You guys continue. I have heard everything.”
We both shook our head at her.
“Answer me, my potential brother-in-law,” he was not letting this go.
“I have no answer. Because your question is baseless and stupid!”
“Oh no! This is neither baseless nor stupid. This happened with me,” he shook his head and then he narrated the whole incident in which I was not interested at all.
“Two years ago, we were at a restaurant and I ordered a new French dish on the menu. Presentation was nice but my Crystal scrunched her nose up and since her face is very expressive I concluded she thought that what s**t I have ordered, and after that, it tasted really bad. But the funny thing is, I read her face expression wrong. When I asked why she scrunched her nose up. She told me that she though that the quantity of dish was small and I should have ordered three more! And I was speechless.”
And now I was speechless and angry. I wanted to throw his laptop on his head for this f*****g s**t stories.
“Sorry one more question!” I stood up fuming as he was really testing my patience and I was bloody helpless. Confronting him was a bad decision which I would not make in my life again after this meeting! Or I’d end up killing him.
“Ask,” I gritted my teeth.
“What would you do if Crystal ignored you? I mean, she loves being alone and doesn’t enjoy company of strangers, and she’ll zone you out if you are not interesting enough.”
“In other words, she day dreams?” I asked because I understood this: loud and clear.
“Yes!”
“And I have no f*****g idea because I have never seen such a complicated person in my whole life,” I yelled. “Just come to the f*****g point.”
“The point is you’ll not force her into anything. I mean anything. You’ll give her time to adjust and you’ll be patient with her. And if you’re lucky, she’ll be comfortable with you in couple of months. Or if you are unlucky, you’ll keep waiting.”
“Fine. She can have as much time as she wants. I’ll not say anything. She doesn’t have to act like a wife. After all this is just a business deal. Nothing else. But I have a condition,” I was not going to sacrifice everything.
“What condition,?” he narrowed his eyes on me and Ashlyn also stood near him.
“That she’ll work as my assistant after marriage and I will disclose this information to her,” I crossed my arms on my chest and glared at my almost brother-in-law.
“Why?” he asked in clearly pissed off mood, and this gave little satisfaction to me.
“Because if she works here all day then how will she feel comfortable with me?! To adjust, we need to spend some time together, right?” Chris gritted his jaw upon hearing my taunting answer.
And with this I left without hearing his reply as I’d had enough of this f*****g meeting. I was going marry one confusing girl. And this was going to take everything in me to loose my temper if she threw any f*****g tantrum.
As I drove out of that building, I saw my soon-to-be wife scowling at the shopping bags as if she was not happy with the purchases and wanted more. But my heart skipped a beat at that expression but I had to mask it.
I scoffed at my brother-in-law. He forgot to mention that she loved to make dent in the bank accounts! At least, this one thing about her wasn’t complicated at all!
