The holidays become a whirlwind of romance, mischief, and serendipity in Tropical Reverie.

When Maryl Harper unexpectedly shares a kiss under the mistletoe with her long-time crush, Jun Carter, the festive magic sparks feelings she thought she’d buried.

As the New Year’s countdown echoes hope and fresh starts, Maryl dares to believe it might finally be her time to capture Jun’s heart.

But fate takes a sharp turn when Maryl’s carefully planned Valentine’s Day surprise—a romantic getaway to the Philippines—derails spectacularly. After catching her cheating boyfriend in a shocking betrayal, Maryl acts impulsively in her anger and slaps an engagement ring on a stranger's finger, only to discover he’s Jun's rival—Lucas “Luke” Gruger, a charming, enigmatic hockey player with a piercing gaze.

To Maryl’s surprise, Luke is also Jun’s boss. What begins as an impulsive act spirals into a tangled web of emotions, misunderstandings, and unexpected connection. Against the breathtaking backdrop of the Philippines where pristine beaches, turquoise waters, vibrant festivals, and lush landscapes provide a paradise setting Maryl finds herself on a journey of self-discovery.

Amid laughter, tears, and revelations, Maryl learns about love, forgiveness, and the courage to embrace the unexpected. Will she break free from the past and trust her heart with new love, or will her longing for what once was keep her from a future filled with promise?

Chapter I: Under the Mistletoe
The scent of pine and cinnamon filled the Harper family’s living room, mingling with the warm hum of chatter and laughter. Maryl Harper, armed with a steaming mug of hot cocoa, navigated the room with ease, exchanging pleasantries with friends and family who had gathered for her annual holiday party. The glittering Christmas tree in the corner stood proudly, adorned with twinkling lights and an eclectic mix of ornaments collected over the years. Everything about the evening radiated the comfort and joy she cherished most during the holiday season—except for the restless flutter in her chest that only seemed to grow with each passing minute. Jun Carter was there. She hadn’t seen him yet, but she knew. The telltale burst of laughter from the kitchen—that unmistakable deep, rich sound—had been enough to send her pulse into overdrive. Jun had been her friend since college, a constant presence in her life, but he’d always been more than just a friend in her heart. She had buried those feelings years ago, convincing herself that a close friendship was enough. Tonight, however, the holiday magic seemed to stir something deeper, something she wasn’t sure she could ignore anymore. Maryl’s best friend, Sophie, sidled up beside her, her cheeks rosy from a combination of laughter and mulled wine. “You’ve been staring at the kitchen door for the last five minutes. Are you finally going to tell him, or are we continuing the annual tradition of hopeless pining?” Maryl groaned, taking a sip of her cocoa. “Hopeless pining sounds safer. Besides, what would I even say? ‘Hey, Jun, Merry Christmas! By the way, I’ve been in love with you since our sophomore year. Pass the cookies?’” Sophie smirked. “That’s one approach. Or you could just see where the night takes you. You never know what might happen under the mistletoe.” Maryl rolled her eyes but couldn’t suppress a small smile. Sophie always knew how to lighten the mood, even when it came to Maryl’s most tightly held secrets. The night wore on, and Maryl eventually found herself in the kitchen, refilling the snack trays. The party was in full swing, with carols playing in the background and glasses clinking in celebration. She was arranging the last of the cookies on a plate when a familiar voice made her freeze. “Need a hand with that?” Turning, she found herself face-to-face with Jun. He leaned casually against the counter, a playful grin on his face, and Maryl’s heart skipped a beat. He looked effortlessly handsome, as always, with his tousled dark hair and that trademark twinkle in his hazel eyes. How did he manage to make a simple sweater and jeans look so good? “I’ve got it, but thanks,” she replied, hoping her voice didn’t betray the whirlwind of emotions churning inside her. “Well, if you need a taste-tester, I’m your guy,” he joked, reaching for a cookie. Maryl swatted his hand away, laughing. “Not until they make it to the table!” He chuckled, and for a moment, they stood there in companionable silence. It was these small, easy interactions that made her fall for him in the first place. But tonight, there was an undercurrent of something more, something unspoken that lingered between them. “Everyone! It’s time for the games!” Sophie’s voice rang out from the living room, drawing everyone’s attention. Maryl and Jun followed the crowd back into the main room, where Sophie had arranged a series of holiday-themed activities. There was laughter and playful banter as teams competed in trivia and charades. Maryl found herself relaxing, enjoying the festive atmosphere—until Sophie announced the final game of the night. “Mistletoe Match!” Sophie declared, holding up a sprig of mistletoe with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Everyone gets paired up. If you find yourselves under the mistletoe, you’ve got to kiss. No exceptions!” The room erupted in cheers and groans as names were drawn from a bowl. Maryl’s heart sank when Sophie handed her a slip of paper. She unfolded it with trembling fingers, expecting to see someone random. Instead, her breath caught in her throat. Jun Carter. Sophie’s grin was practically ear-to-ear as she whispered, “You’re welcome.” The game progressed with laughter and playful embarrassment as couples took their turns under the mistletoe. Maryl’s nerves mounted with each passing moment. When her name was finally called alongside Jun’s, the room erupted in cheers and wolf whistles. Sophie gave her an encouraging nudge, and Maryl reluctantly stepped forward. Jun met her in the center of the room, his expression unreadable but warm. “Looks like it’s our turn,” he said softly, his voice tinged with amusement. Maryl’s heart pounded as they stood beneath the mistletoe. The world around her seemed to fade, leaving only the two of them. Jun’s gaze searched hers, and for a fleeting moment, she thought she saw something shift in his expression—something that mirrored the longing she’d carried for years. “Well, rules are rules,” he said, his lips curving into a half-smile. Before she could overthink, Jun leaned in, and their lips met. The kiss was soft, warm, and impossibly brief, yet it sent a shockwave through her entire being. When they pulled apart, Maryl’s cheeks burned, and she struggled to steady her racing heart. The room erupted in applause and teasing shouts, but Maryl barely registered it. Jun’s gaze lingered on hers for a moment longer before he smiled and stepped back. “Merry Christmas, Maryl,” he said, his voice low enough for only her to hear. As the party wound down and guests began to trickle out, Maryl couldn’t stop replaying the kiss in her mind. She felt a glimmer of hope, a sense that maybe, just maybe, things between her and Jun could change. But as she turned to head to the kitchen, she overheard a snippet of conversation that froze her in her tracks. “Yeah, Jun’s got this big Valentine’s Day trip planned with some mystery woman,” one of his friends said, laughing. “Apparently, it’s going to be epic.” Maryl’s stomach dropped. Valentine’s Day? Mystery woman? The joy and hope she’d felt moments ago evaporated, replaced by a sinking sense of dread. What had she gotten herself into? To be continued in Chapter 2: New Year, New Beginnings.
