28 GRAYSON Although Wolf Dex still cannot see, he races faster than ever before. Even so, it seems to take forever for us to reach Thornfield. By the time we enter the city, plumes of gray smoke curl into the air. I’m no full wolf shifter like Dex, but even I can follow the scent of burning wood. We come to a skidding stop by Thornfield’s entrance. “Under the stairs, there’s a cache of clothes,” says Wolf Dex. “Toss me something.” I slide off Wolf Dex’s back, rush over to the entrance, and press on the outer wooden slats of the staircase. Sure enough, the panels slide back, revealing a pile of shifter clothes. All of them are neatly tied into packets. With all the smoke, it’s hard to see anything.
